WASHINGTON -- A crackdown on guns is meeting some resistance in the District.
Police are asking residents to submit to voluntary searches in exchange for amnesty under the District's gun ban. They passed out fliers requesting cooperation on Monday.
The program will begin in a couple of weeks in the Washington Highlands neighborhood of southeast Washington and will later expand to other neighborhoods. Officers will go door to door asking residents for permission to search their homes.
Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said the "safe homes initiative" is aimed at residents who want to cooperate with police. She gave the example of parents or grandparents who know or suspect their children have guns in the home.
Community leaders went door to door in Ward 8 Monday to advise residents not to invite police into their homes to search for weapons.
"Bad idea," said D.C. School Board member William Lockridge. "I think the people should not open your doors under any circumstances, don't even crack your door, unless someone has a warrant for your arrest."
Ron Hampton, of the Black Police Officers Association, said he doesn't expect many in the community to comply.
"This is one of those communities where the police even have problems getting information about crimes that are going on in the community, so to suggest, now, that the police have enough community capital in their hand that the community is going to cooperate with them, I'm not so sure that's a good idea," Hampton said.
If weapons are recovered, they will be tested and destroyed if they are not found to be linked to any other crimes.
A police spokeswoman said that if evidence of other crimes is found during voluntary searches, amnesty will be granted for that crime as well.
"Chief Lanier has been clear," Traci Hughes said. "Amnesty means amnesty."
Don't let them in, folks. Don't let them in.
Certainly officer. Just as soon as you release all your bank account and credit information, so I can be sure that you're not on the payroll of one of the District's drug gangs. After all, you don't have abything to hide, do you?
Then, after your drug test comes back negative, you're welcome in my home.
True but a lawyer would OWN any prosecutor who tried to use evidence of a crime found during one of these searches.
It is about as dumb a move as law enforcement can make.
Think about it.
Murder weapons can be gotten rid of and it fouls up any prosecutions because the defense lawyer has all kinds of legal ground to throw out the evidence.
Its beyond stupid, it is criminal negligence on the part of the idiot who came up with such a plan. She has opened the door to let many many criminals off scott free because she has just given them a way to destroy evidence.
Its dumber than dumb.
Judge Silverman may very well be regretting his issuing a stay for the DC Circuit Court’s verdict. The extra time granted was to let the Supreme Court weigh in, not let burrocrats figure out clever ways of abusing the extension.
It's not about getting prosecutions of murderers.
It's about subjugating otherwise free citizens.
One of these things is not like the other ones, one of these things is phoney and fake....
I thought the same thing ...
I saw this crap coming in the early '70's when we got some bimbo "dectectives". Political appointees don'tcha know.
A real joy.
If you speak to any D.C. cop on the down low they will tell you that if you don't own a gun, you are an idiot.
So if they caught you carrying a firearm in DC they'd ignore it and you wouldn't be arrested?
I understand fully but it also fouls up prosecutions in actual criminal cases. A smart criminal could use this as a way to destroy evidence.
Its dumb on soooo many fronts.
My understanding is if police get your consent then they can use what they find even if the consent is fraudulently obtained. The police are allowed to lie to you legally. Legally you are not allowed to lie to the police.
Maybe it’s not dumb. Maybe it’s exactly what some pols want.
I got my first CCW permit, approved by a judge that stamped it (like all others he issued) with “for sporting use only” (meaning I couldn’t CCW for defense, only for hunting etc.). Some years later he was removed for office for being heavily involved in cocaine trafficing. Do the math.
Shades of Nazi Germany.
ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒE
Exactly. It's not like we can actually trust our elected and appointed public servants. Pimps & Ho's, dirty cash in the freezer, DUI's, drugs, embezzlement, extortion, perjury, and obstruction of justice, - that's just a start of what we've seen coming from those who work on our behalf in the District.
How about the people violate Chief La La's personal 4th amendment protection, all the way down to her hard drives, phone records and bank statements, and if she comes up clean, only then can she continue with her door to door socialist crusade.
After all, we're all for transparency in Government, aren't we?
Translation: "We don't care what crimes you might be committing, we just want your guns."
Exactly. Presumably this statement of “oh, you won’t be prosecuted, you’ll get amnesty, etc.” is being given in an entirely non-binding manner. So long as they can get you to consent (short of actual threats of violent harm), it doesn’t matter what they say. Verbal statements are not recorded, pre-distributed leaflets are not binding.
That said, I expect they won’t prosecute even if they find what they say they’re looking for (but if they find something else of issue, heh...). The goal isn’t prosecution, the goal is subjugation by disarmament. The MPD’s power is derived from the population’s inability to defend itself, and with the presumed legalization of arms coming in June, they’re taking this opportunity to see to it nobody has any come June.
Another Can’t Understand Normal Thinking.
Chief Lanier sounds like the East Coast version of SF Police Chief Heather Fong.
How can they work under someone like that?
They should meet some sporadic resistance in the district.
