IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Police said Monday that they found a woman and four children dead in an Iowa City home.

Police confirm they received a 911 call telling them to go to 629 Barrington Road around 6:30 a.m. When they arrived officers found the door unlocked and five people dead inside.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette is reporting that the home is owned by Steven F. Sueppel, a former executive at Hills Bank & Trust.

Police said Sueppel was not in the home when they arrived and they are looking for him.

Police have not yet confirmed if Sueppel is the same person indicted by a federal grand jury on Feb. 12 for bank embezzlement. Court documents show a Steven F. Sueppel was accused of taking $559,040 from the bank from July 26, 2000 until Sept. 12, 2007.

Banker embezzled, spent the money on cocaine. Was indicted, released on bail. Today he apparently murdered his wife, four children, and himself.

I got a call early this morning from my son, a student at UofI. He had gotten a robocall from the school about this. That there was an active shooter in the area. The next message, and the website, said the students should all go to class and just be vigilant and to call 911 if they saw the car. So, they think it’s important enough to send robocalls to all the students...and then tell them to go to class as usual. The administration is friggin’ nuts.

Why is it when one crudball screws up he has to take his whole family with him?

Why is it that we vote for bankrupt fools in to office or to hold a corporate job or leading position in public life?

I am so sick the fools who gets these jobs while others with common sense have to take a back seat!

A lady here at work whose daughter lives down in I.C. said the same thing - the students got alerted. Which seems kind of an overreaction to me since there doesn’t seem to be anything that would make the cops have thought “oh, he’s going after the school”.

"..the driver was killed but burned so badly .."

I'd want to make damned sure it was him before I wrote him off.

banker indicted for embezzlement murders entire family, then kills himself in a fiery crash in the family minivan.

Can’t make this stuff up.

I got the same call (I’m faculty). Once I heard that the guy was driving, as opposed to walking around the campus shooting, I figured the guy was long gone, and indeed, we got another call saying there was no specific threat and that it was ok to go to class.

I think the crime is just so shocking for a quiet town such as Iowa City, that the police wanted to warn everyone (they didn’t know it was the husband at first), and better to be safe than sorry.

We were surprised this made the national news. Students couldn’t believe that my mother called from DC to make sure I was ok. : )
