As John McCain begins a three-day swing today through California -- one of the newest members of his campaign team, outgoing EBay Chief Executive Meg Whitman, may draw much of the attention.
Whitman, a 51-year-old billionaire, according to Forbes magazine, is said to be considering a run for California governor in 2010 after getting her first taste of politics on the finance team of ex-presidential candidate Mitt Romney, a former colleague at the consulting firm Bain & Co.
(snip)
Little is known about Whitman's political views; until recently she was registered as an independent.
She grew up in a Republican family on Long Island. But when she moved from New York to California in 1980, she said, "I had voted Republican most of the time, but I wasn't entirely sure -- and I thought 'You know what, let's just do decline-to-state.' "
...Whitman lines up with McCain on many issues -- although she said she doesn't agree with his call for overturning the abortion rights decision Roe vs. Wade.
...As the nation deals with a weakening economy and the mortgage foreclosure crisis, Whitman said she would work with McCain to press for making Bush's tax cuts permanent and reducing the corporate tax rate. When asked what could be done about the mortgage foreclosure crisis, she said she approved of "public-private partnerships to keep as many people in their homes as humanly possible."
In California, Whitman said she generally supports Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's philosophy of avoiding tax hikes to address the state's budget shortfall. "Tax increases should absolutely be the very last resort," she said. ...
She also demurred on immigration, saying she had "not dug in deep as to what the right thing to do is nationally, or for that matter in California."

Oh, give me a break. There's nothing to "[dig] in deep" to.
Wouldn’t raise taxes unless it was a last resort... The problem is, people who say this think they have come to the last resort if they are faced with cutting any liberal programs.
As for the illegal alien comments, this is a woman who professes to be an intelligent ‘thinking’ woman. Despite the negatives associated with illegal immigration, she hasn’t taken the time to study the issue.
One thing is evident, the CRP leadership is going to love this one.
Sounds just like Christie Whitman’s secret sister.
Their latest trojan horse entry, no doubt.
You realize of course that this is an excellent example of what a John McCain presidency will bring us, a multitude of new political prospects that haven’t a clue what conservatism is, yet being lofted to run for office as Republicans.
We won’t be getting one John McCain. We’ll be getting hundreds if not thousands of them. Each one will be voted in for the same reason John will be. “Well, I know they’re terrible, but look who they’re running against.”
Good-bye conservatism. It was nice knowing you.
Exactly. Read my number six. We’re on the same page.
So True. By electing McCain you will be getting hundreds of leftists in leadership positions throughout the GOP. Conservatives, and particularly conservative candidates, will be squashed.
It’s as simple as 1+1=2. We are witnessing the end of conservatism. This forum will be flooded with folks who will damn anyone who speaks out against McCain. It already is.
Yep — we are on the same page.
In addition to that, it’s pretty frustrating that they are recruiting people who have never been involved or even followed the politics in the state. Meg’s first contribution to state politics was to back Democrat Steve Westly for Controller — running against Tom McClintock. After that, she threw more money into Westly’s campaign for Governor two-and-a-half years ago, along with bucks for Democrat Assemblyman Joe Simitian.
And she doesn’t have a position on immigration? Give me a break! She may be a great business-woman, but what the heck makes her qualified to be governor — and what the heck makes her a Republican?
The big-money donors are still using the Hollywood scouting agents to look for the latest puppet to put in office. The more empty the political resume, the better. That way they can try to sell the blank-sheet as whatever feel like might sell at the moment.
Sure wish I could disagree with you on any point there. It really sucks to confront this reality.
This forum will be flooded with folks who will damn anyone who speaks out against McCain.
The infestation of rino-selling liberals and trolls that overwhelmed FR during the California Recall election seems to have never left.
Long Island? Is she related to Christie Todd Whitman?
Whitman appears to be Meg’s maiden name and Christie’s married name, so any possible connection is not apparent.
I’ll pass on Meg. Sounds like a RINO.
