Gunshots bring abrupt end to frantic 911 call

WEST COVINA, California (AP) -- A woman was asking a 911 dispatcher for help when her pleas were interrupted by gunshots, then silence.

She was shot to death.

The woman told the dispatcher someone was trying to break into her home in upscale West Covina, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Dan Rosenberg said.

"Deputies heard gunshots followed by silence and an open phone line," he said.

Deputies arrived at the house, 20 miles east of Los Angeles, a few minutes after Wednesday's late morning call.

The woman, whose name was not released by police, had been shot several times. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

"At this point we believe it was a burglary gone awry," Rosenberg said.

Investigators are trying to determine if anything was taken, Deputy Luis Castro said.

While police were investigating the shooting, a man arrived at the home asking about his wife.

When he heard that the woman had been shot and killed, he collapsed and started to cry, saying "No! She just called me. You lie."

The man was placed in a patrol car and taken to a sheriff's station, police said.

Witnesses said they saw one or more men running from the house, Rosenberg said. Investigators used bloodhounds to conduct yard-to-yard searches.

No arrests had been made by Thursday morning, deputies said.

As a precaution during the search, a high school and an elementary school were locked down for about two hours, police Lt. Dan Brooks said.

There are ~365 murders committed by illegals in America, every single month.

Each month more die at the hands of Illegals than Al Qeda?

We should have attacked Mexico not Iraq.

She should have had a ‘no guns’ sign on her house ... that would have stopped that ....

What if you start having trouble right around the White House, and you have difficulty leaving the airspace?

When seconds counted, the police were only minutes away for this lady.

He blew off both the robber's hands with a shotgun when he tried to attack with a bat. I don't think the thief will ever be stealing again.

OTOH, some people never learn. He's probably trying to pick pockets with his hooks. Or maybe use them as lock picks. Next time point a little higher Dude.

What if you fire 4 round of .45ACP in quick succession? The second one would likely be the kill shot, but you fire two more after that?

Unless she applied to purchase a gun within the last ten days, kal's gun laws had nothing to do with it.

More likely she was under the false impression that the police were there to protect her.

When in trouble, “Aviate, navigate, communicate”<<<<<<<<

Or, my favorite aviation saying to illustrate priorities: “Never drop the airplane in order to fly the microphone”.

Once someone is being attacked they have the right to
decide how much force is necessary to stop the attack.
The best amount of force is to stop them immediately and gives
them no chance for any type of retribution(since one
may suspect that a wounded perp, is probably more dangerous
than a healthy perp.).
Best advice, don’t leave yourself open to the choices
of a criminal. Better to have 12 try you than 6 carry you.

I would try and avoid any confrontation, but if the perp
wants to continue...well.....what more can one do?

No matter what we say, it will never convince a anti-gun liberal until it’s a member of their family in the body bag...if then. Some people just don’t have the logic circuit activated in their brain.

One can see the benefit of firing first as a proactive measure hopefully turning away would-be murderous criminals w/o any bloodshed

Right. so's they can come back another day -or - how would you feel if, 10 minutes later, they robbed and murdered your neighbor...

That’s great!

I never made the “connection” between Dialing 911 and picking up M1911.....

That’s good....

Well, the ONLY occasion I ever discharged my piece in “home defense”......was purely unnecessary, but VERY effective..

I caught a peeping tom in my backyard one night - after he had bothered several of the neighborhood ladies during the summer evenings.....

My wife thought she saw movement outside her bathroom window, and DEMANDED I “check it out”....with pistol in hand, I went out the front door quietly and moved quietly around to the back of the house..

Sure enough - there he was, trying to see through an obscured bathroom window pane... IMPOSSIBLE.

I didn’t say a word -— I pulled the slide to the rear and let it slam home.
He heard the unmistakable sound and seems to levitate off the ground and started running and jumping over the anchor fences like an Olympic star..

I fired two rounds into the ground to “accentuate” the point I didn’t want to have to deal with him again...

20 minutes later, I had the police at the door, and had a whole lot of explaining to do.....
Good thing I could show him where BOTH rounds fired had been into the side garden — or they would have been even more upset with me......

Fortunately - most of the Montgomery County Police at that time were former Marines, and he cut me a LOT of slack..
This was LONG before Chief Moose took over the Montgomery County Police and let his racism muck up the hunt for the D.C. snipers.......

Boy - Chief Moose — poster child for affirmative action gone bad...

Prayers for the 911 com center workers. Nothing worse than the feeling of absolute helplessness and inability to intervene.

My wife took a 911 call from a little girl when we were living in San Diego. The little girl was upstairs, her parents were arguing in the kitchen. My wife dispatched a deputy to the home, but she heard two gunshots before the officer arrived. She told the little girl to stay upstairs until the officer arrived. The deputy found the parents in the kitchen. A murder/suicide.

My wife has had other calls from suicidal people in San Diego. Occasionally it ends abruptly with a gunshot. She has far fewer of those incidents in Idaho. There's a small group of self abusers who call frequently. She knows most all of them by name after 7 years. That's a level of service available when you only serve a city of 9700 instead of a county of 3 million.

A real tragedy in upscale Covina Hills. The MO for this crime is as interesting as the poor victims last name....Hsu. Probably no connection to Norman Hsu..?

Her Chinese surname suggests that it might be a typical Asian home invasion robbery. That was very common in the Mira Mesa area of San Diego. The Asian community doesn't have much faith in banks, thus they commonly keep large amounts of cash in the home. That often makes them targets of their own community.

She always ends with “My husband is the bald man with the 45”

Pretty much the ONLY reason to call 911 ... until the threat is done...
