As first reported by WREC's Mike Fleming, Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton is stepping down on July 31. Sources suggest that he plans to campaign for superintendent of Memphis City Schools.
...
Herenton was re-elected last fall and has served as mayor for 16 years. Recently a federal grand jury exploring Herentons ties to a city contractor has served subpoenas at the Memphis Area Transit Authority offices.

Holy Cow!!!! Whooo Hoooo
I'm totally unfamiliar with this guy and situation.
Black Democrat machine mayor as corrupt as they come. We figured the only way to get him out of office with his built-in power base was feet first or in handcuffs.
King Willy to put it kindly has been a very bad Mayor since 1991. He race baits as often as Jesse Jackson and would fail miserably at the game Sim City.
What pressured him, then?
Pressured him to resign? I suppose favors finally caught up with him.
OK, thanx.
So why is he waiting to resign?
I thought that, too. I work in Memphis’ city hall. It has been my dream to be waiting to get on the elevator, the doors open, King Willie is in there surrounded by guys in dark suits and Herenton’s hands under a folded coat handcuffed, and being told to wait for another elevator. I would have then called my wife telling her what I just witnessed. There is still time to have that dream come true. He resigns officially July 31. So anything is possible.
And I thought that the only way Memphis would be free of the King would be for him to be carried out in plastic. Again, there is still time.
One of the first things that crossed my mind was that he’s doing this because he knows the Feds are about to close in on him for some yet-to-be-determined crime. I can hope. Yes, there is dancing in the streets of the River City tonight. The dark cloak of political corruption is about to be lifted from Memphis. We can start to plan a positive future, one that has a mayor who’s last name IS NOT Herenton. This has trully been a Good Friday in Memphis.
Hurry up July 31!
Wilder not seeking reelection either in another thread... I really wonder if something big is in the works.
“Sources suggest that he plans to campaign for superintendent of Memphis City Schools.”
That’s just what Memphis schools need!
Maybe somebody may have discovered where the missing level of the FedEx Forum has disappeared to. The DOT certainly cut the Interstate 40 projects after that little caper.
I'm sure that William would be happy back in the School system as the ratio of women to men is much greater than city government.
For what its worth I think my property value just increased a little this afternoon.
How many prostitutes has he been boinking?
I expect Jimmy Nafeh to be around forever.
