Barack Obama will give a major speech on "the larger issue of race in this campaign," he told reporters in Monaca, PA just now.
He was pressed there, as he has been at recent appearances, on statements by his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright.
"I am going to be talking about not just Reverend Wright, but the larger issue of race in this campaign," he said.
He added that he would "talk about how some of these issues are perceived from within the black church issue for example," he said.
He also briefly defended Wright from the image that has come through in a handful of repeatedly televised clips from recent Wright sermons.
"The caricature thats being painted of him is not accurate," he said.
The speech could offer Obama an opportunity to move past the controversy over his pastor, and to turn the conversation to a topic he'd rather focus on: his Christian faith. But the speech also guarantees that the Wright story will continue to dominate political headlines.
Mitt Romney's attempt directly to address his Mormonism last year never decisively put the issue to rest for some voters.

I’m hoping it shores up his lefty base enough to get him over the finish line
For the record, the Wright stuff doesn't make me less likely to vote for Obama - there was already no chance of that. :-))
Based on her campaigning, she’s not. Based on her teams ability to float dirt, perhaps.
>He added that he would “talk about how some of these issues are perceived from within the black church issue for example,” he said.<
Tsk, tsk. Politically speaking, Americans have had it beaten into their skulls by, let’s see, which party was it, that there MUST be separation of church and state.
So, isn’t it reasonable to state that what those within a given church perceive should be without merit?
I think HRC is more likely than BHO to win OH and PA and, thus, the election.
No way. With tens of thousands of blacks in Philly and Pittsburgh sitting home after Hillary steals it, and plenty of veterans and Reagan democrats/Independents who would go for McCain, ain’t gonna happen, imho.
Your white guilt may only be assuaged if you vote for 0'bambi. Anything else makes you a racist. Of course, you'll still be a racist if you vote for him, but at least you'll be an enlightened racist (kind of like a recovering alcoholic).
Maybe it’s time for Obama to start using his white half.
Maybe he is ready to negotiate with Hildabeast for the vp position on her dream ticket
This is great. The Rats arrive in Denver with BO in the lead in delegates but tanking in the polls. If the supers vote in Hillary they have chaos, riots and loose the election. If they go with BO..they loose.
Which door will they choose.
Course it is a long time til Aug and even longer til Nov.
McCaine is going to be under fire like we have never seen..a loosing Rat can sure bite.
And he didn’t even mention Fred’s excessive consumption of Ripple.
“The only sensible thing would be to move to a color-blind society.”
Actually Obama himself was the type of guy who talked like that.
this is a bad move for him. He should have laughed off Wright, or make a speech about standing above race instead of trying to put wright into a level context with mainstream black practice. Also distinguish himself from Clintons, which he fails to do effectively.
That’s great!
Well, yes. But when Obama talked like that it was all pablum, and cliche. It was vague, feel-good stuff. People swallowed it because they wanted to hear that kind of message. They didn't care too much about the details.
Now it's different. Now Obama has to explain a 20-year relationship with a rabid promoter of race hatred. Oh? You want to move past racial division? You do?
Then tell me EXACTLY what you propose. I need the details spelled out for me.
And Obama can't do that. His vague cliches won't work, and his supporters have no interest in giving up the victim game. So I don't see how his speech will get him anywhere.
No matter what Obama does now, he is going to look like just another slippery political chameleon. O how the mighty have fallen ];>)
Obama is very clever and dangerous. On the surface he seems all cool and collected but whats underneath?
His lecturing us on race is asinine.
he attended a racist organization for 22 years and enveloped himself in it and gave it money
both he and his wife
he is frigging crazy to lecture me
what’s worse is that so many let him ride on this for months back when we all knew....even some here
