I know FreeRepublic is not for profit. I understand that any changes that are done to it are "unencumbered" by any feasible plan.
But you are driving me nuts, John!
Think things through from my perspective. I don't have time to play around figuring out all the subtle differences between on Alpha release and the Next.
Do the right thing. Beta. Test. Don't break what isn't broken. Never, ever, do anything that breaks a bookmark.
I understand that playgrounds are fun, but I, for one, don't have time to coddle you whilst you are playing!
Yay!!!! ;-)
LOL... good one.
My peeves about it only extend to no notice of upcoming changes. Getting hit with new and improved when you're just looking for old and comfortable before morning coffee is well, kinda like the Wife/GF nagging or questioning you before morning coffee.
Damn irritating. :)
Over all I do like the changes. Um, on the TABS; Brief and Comments seem to be the same except well, brief is brief, but one's instinct is to go to Comments. My $0.02 is they should be grouped together since they provide the same function. Having them as separate tabs implies separate places. Know what I mean? And then choosing for Full (Comments) or Brief, should mark that as a preference for when you hit "comments" from within an article. Unless you're going to add Brief to those choices.
Okay, well, back to morning coffee.
Have fun guys!
Posting a pic: < IMG SRC="http://image.source.link.com" > and to get the image source link, just right click the mouse on the picture you want to link, and use the "Copy Image Location" option. Then when you're writing the tag (example above) for the image, right click the mouse right after the first " and choose "paste", and then close it with the second ". Easy as pie.
NOTE: Some websites do not like nor allow "hot linking" of their pictures. You can properly write your tag, but the image will not show, or not show for long, if that is the case. Nothing we can do about it, except look for the same pic on another site that doesn't have those restrictions.
Thanks. I’m using tinypic.com and it’s worked so far.
Are you thinking about avatars?
Hope not.
My 2 cents, anyway.
I agree completely with your hankering for a default option for brief comments (just who posted to who, no pics or text)and for each seperate forum. See posts 65 and 70 — it sounds like there will be a way to do this after it gets sorted some more.
Freegards
Agreed.
I think avatars are a very mixed ‘blesing’ at best.
HTTP://WWW.ABOVETOPSECRET.COM has them.
I think they are mostly hideous and plenty are plain evil. We wouldn’t have that much of that problem hereon. But they still take up time etc. to load—especially when everyone on a thread has one and for the folks tied to dial-up. Mostly, I find them a distraction and more annoying than anything. I suppose it would be OK if a user could opt out of them on his settings page—opt out of their showing on his screen.
They can be useful in quickly finding a particular user’s post.
I found the following linked pages to have all of the HTML I use here at FR, so I keep it handy for reference: Dave Raggett's Intro to HTML ^ -- it's from the w3c group, and sets the standards for the web. Of course, MS initially screwed around with it, but they're coming back -- slowly.
(Oh, yeah -- it opens in a new window -- another trick I learned from FR !! )
Then John fixed that, for which we were forever grateful. ;^)
Thank God the miserable blue gray background went away from the forum.
Some of us, like me, are new to computers and visiting sites, and some are elderly, The box used to have search next to it and even then it took me a while to figure out what it was good for. Sorry if I am a bit old and inexperienced for your tastes, but don’t worry you’ll get there too some day, if you live that long.
ping posting picture info and the next comment too.
“Search boxes like that are all over the web.”
In my short period of having a computer, I have been so happy with Free Republic that I haven’t bothered going “all over the web”. In spite of the minor problems I want the Robinsons to know that I and probably many others with specific concerns are in general very appreciative of all their efforts.
Much appreciated. Thanks.
Er eh ... you lost me there ... not sure what you're seeing, or how I did it ;).
Be sure to let me know, via Freeper mail, if you intend to register to use Sanity Island, before you register. When I get "Register" requests I'm not expecting, from people I don't recognize, I just toss them.
One disadvantage of SanityIsland.us is that it's not that easy to use; the people who have become regular users so far all have an extra "Geek Gene."
Is Firefox a reject...it works different than IE in many ways./
***can you tell me how you got Quixs answer to you at 136 to show YOUR response to him at 139***
<<<Er eh ... you lost me there ... not sure what you’re seeing, or how I did it ;).<<<
Okay, this is what MY computer showed:
When I hit reply to 136, it took me to 136, as usual, but IMMEDIATELY after that was YOUR reply no. 139.
In the past, I would gotten JUST THE REPLIES to 136. And I would have had to click on 139 to see YOUR reply.
I’ve always wished FR worked the way it did for me last evening, but I’ll have to see if it was a fluke by checking “replies” in the future.
To be honest, I haven’t tried it for quite a long time, so I don’t know. And when people talk about it, it’s mostly how much they hate Bill Gates and that sort of thing.
