Vatican Adds 7 Deadly Sins Including Abortion, Contraception & Drug Dealing
FOX ^ | 03/10/08 | Richard Owen

Posted on 03/10/2008 10:21:49 AM PDT by Froufrou

The list came as the Pope deplored the “decreasing sense of sin” in today’s “secularized world” and the falling numbers of Roman Catholics going to confession.

The Catholic Church divides sins into venial, or less serious, sins and mortal sins, which threaten the soul with eternal damnation unless absolved before death through confession and penitence.

It holds mortal sins to be “grave violations of the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes,” including murder, contraception, abortion, perjury, adultery and lust.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that “immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into Hell.”

Although there is no definitive list of mortal sins, many believers accept the broad seven deadly sins or capital vices laid down in the 6th century by Pope Gregory the Great and popularized in the Middle Ages by Dante in "The Inferno": lust, gluttony, avarice, sloth, anger, envy and pride.

Christians are exhorted instead to adhere to the seven holy virtues: chastity, abstinence, temperance, diligence, patience, kindness and humility.

Bishop Gianfranco Girotti, head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, the Vatican body which oversees confessions and plenary indulgences, said after a week-long Lenten seminar for priests that surveys showed 60 percent of Catholics in Italy no longer went to confession.

He said that priests must take account of “new sins which have appeared on the horizon of humanity as a corollary of the unstoppable process of globalization.” Whereas sin in the past was thought of as being an individual matter, it now has “social resonance.”

“You offend God not only by stealing, blaspheming or coveting your neighbor’s wife, but also by ruining the environment, carrying out morally debatable scientific experiments, or allowing genetic manipulations which alter DNA or compromise embryos,” he said.

Your bigoted comment and those of other Catholic-bashers is disgusting.

I think the Catholic Church's condemnation of child molestation has been very clear as of late. Those priests who have been caught, have been defrocked.

Also, the level of child molestation in other denominations is as high if not higher than the rate among Catholic priests.

One more thing -- you may disagree with the Church's position on certain issues of faith and morals, but it is clear that the liberal attacks on the Church reflect their concern that the Church still has great influence on the morals of society.

Please take your tasteless child molester jokes over the the DU.

So does that mean when my husband leaves me I can have my husband’s brother do the honors if I’m still furtile?

So if the bishops of the church refuse communion to politicians who support legalize abortion, shouldn't they also do the same to politicians who support legalized contraception? Never mind the rank-and-file Catholics who practice it?

Won't be many people left in the pews, they do that.

And yet again we show them WHERE something is in the Bible (and use a Protestant translation to boot) and Protestants pretend that it doesn’t exist.

Bishop Girotti said that mortal sins also included taking or dealing in drugs

Yes, we do need a list, that's a vague statement. Legal or illegal drugs or both. What about drugs that are legal in one place but not in another?

You offend God not only by stealing, blaspheming or coveting your neighbor’s wife, but also by ruining the environment, carrying out morally debatable scientific experiments

. . . such as experiments designed to allege that American capitalists are ruining the environment. Aside from bearing false witness, that's a twofer or threefer already, since envy, hypocrisy, and the worship of false gods are the foundation-stones of environmentalism.

So, once you’ve decided you want no more children, your sex life is over?

Amazing some people actually think that.

Not I. I have two great kids and no more. My sex life is actually getting better as I get older. :>)).

But I am Baptist what do I know?

Within the Catholic church, the priest, acting in his role of representing Jesus, forgives in the confessional. If the sinner is sincerely repentant and confesses the sin, the priest bestows forgiveness in Jesus’ name.

So, the simple answer is Jesus forgives our sins.

So, use a condom, go to hell.

Or... wear a scapular and tip the judgment back in your favor.

...and oddly molestering children once again escapes the list

**
I assume you mean “molesting”, which is on the so-called list presented by this bishop’s comments, viz., pedophilia. (I guess your reading ability was impaired by your anti-Catholic bias. )

Pedophilia doesn't appear on this list of the New and Improved Seven Deadly Sins:

Mgr Girotti named the new mortal sins to be (1)genetic modification; (2) human experimentations, (3) polluting the environment; (4) social injustice; (5) causing poverty; (6) financial gluttony; and (7) taking drugs.

Unless you lump it under "social injustice." He comments on pedophilia in his comments to reporters, but it doesn't appear that it made the Top Seven.

Cloning has been going on for a century? You mean for more than one hundred years cloning has been going on?

Dolly was the first cloned animal in the mid-1990’s. That’s not 100 years ago. Unless you’ve stepped out of your time maching from the year 2108.

Mr. 2108, are there 100’s of 1000’s of cloned Maria Sharapova’s walking around? If so, pity me for missing it. I had to put up with Rosie O’Donnell.

Yes, I’m sure you misspoke. But I can always daydream about the future, right?

And don’t forget, the Vatican will definitely be here in 2108 as the Church that Jesus himself started. Don’t be like Stalin in 1952 and snort “How many divisions does the Pope have?”

Yours truly,
The Woim

not exactly true. The “pill” (I mean the standard birth control pill, based on estrogen and progestin) does several things: it prevents ovulation in the first place, and impedes sperm. I think that even if an egg was released, it is less likely to be fertilized, but am not sure if all birth control pills render eggs to be less receptive or just some of them.

the pill can make the uterine walls more resistent to a newly fertilized embryo, but based on what i have read, if a woman uses birth control properly it should not have to work in that manner because it halts ovulation and impedes spermm, thus preventing fertilization.

Contraception is usurping God’s domaine. If you believe that God creates life (I do), then why would you use contraception to prevent God from creating life?

Also, with contraception women become mere sex toys.

Yours truly,
The Woim

Thanks for the bible scripture. But maybe 1st John is talking about spiritual light or darkness or spiritual life or death.

And up earlier in First John chapt 2 God tells us that Jesus Christ takes care of all that for us.

That’s not enough for me. I want them alerted to law enforcement.
