Iraq service changed suspect in Burk's death, mom says (You just knew it was coming..)
Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | 9 MAR 2008 | AJC Staff/Wire Reports

The mother of the man charged with killing Auburn University student Lauren Burk said her son was an Iraq war veteran who was changed after his service, and she offered an apology to the freshman's family.

Burk, an 18-year-old from Marietta, was found shot on the side of an off-campus road Tuesday night outside Auburn, and her car was found burning in a campus parking lot.

Williams told the television station that her son hasn't been the same after serving 16 months in Iraq. She says her son had been living with her in Smiths, Ala., since returning from the war. Smiths is outside Phenix City and about 30 miles southeast of Auburn.

Ah, the Vietnam era drumbeat is returning - “The war has turned them all into crazed killers” crap.

You stole my line. That’s exactly what I thought when I saw that. Later in the article it points out that this soldier was kicked out of the army for punching a Sgt. in the face. People who knew him say he was a bully. Of course one person said he was a nice guy because he would say hi to people at Walmart. He sounds like a real dirt-bag.

No claim that it is the case here but people change after combat. PTSB is very real.

He was also a veteran of “mom’s” failed upbringing.

Hey, not everyone comes back from combat in working order. I don’t know what this guy did in his tour though.

Lockhart, a 2003 high school graduate, spent three years in the Army but was dishonorably discharged for punching a sergeant.

What a shock. He was a POS in the Army, too.

Funny. I have five good friends that are Viet Nam vets. None of them have murdered me or anyone else lately...and all saw some serious combat in two or more tours.

My cousin, and kids of four other friends, plus many ex-co-workers have been in Iraq 2, 3, 4, even 6 tours...no homicides there, either.

*SHRUG*

This guy was a little “off” to begin with, most likely. And having out-processed a few thousand soldiers myself over the span of my military career, believe me, EVERY soldier knows where to go to get the help they need. And EVERY combat soldier has a network of people pulling for him/her and keeping tabs on them post-discharge...they’re not just shown the door.

But, she’s his Mom. Of course she needs to blame someone/something other than her son FOR HIS ACTIONS.

From the Atlanta Journal Constipation:

One neighbor who grew up with Lockhart told the AJC he was a troublemaker who liked to pick on younger boys. But another said Lockhart seemed like a good kid who mowed his family's lawn and always said hello to her at Wal-Mart.

"That's crazy," said another neighbor, Thomas Moore, 19, who said Lockhart bullied him as a youngster, too. "I wouldn't have believed that."

Many a gang mom has said “he was a good boy” right after they killed someone. Now some gang moms say he was a good boy until he went to Iraq. Many gang members who served will still have a gang mentality after they are discharged. PTSD doesn’t cause killers. Killers with PTSD will kill.

It sounds like he liked hanging out at Wal-Mart for his next victims.

Hours before Lockhart arrest, an elderly woman was robbed and carjacked at a Wal-Mart in Newnan, about 35 miles southwest of Atlanta, on Friday morning. Newnan police reportedly issued a lookout for Lockhart's vehicle

and may face additional charges in several robberies -- including the one at the Newnan Wal-Mart.

I've never been in combat (or anywhere near it) but I've heard it said often that combat can change a guy...usually not for the better. If .000002% of veterans of Iraq,Vietnam,Korea,WW II go on to murder after seeing combat then perhaps we need to view this as "collateral damage".

Just my 2 cents' worth.
