A longtime Republican district fell to the Democrats Saturday when a wealthy businessman and scientist snatched former House Speaker Dennis Hastert's congressional seat in a closely watched special election. Democrat Bill Foster won 52 percent of the vote compared to 48 percent for Republican Jim Oberweis. With 565 of 568 precincts reporting, Foster had 51,140 votes to Oberweis' 46,270.

My concerns are with what happens next after the eventual full enactment of the Fairness Doctrine, which will end up legally ending the existence of U.S. conservatism, as well as after illegal immigrants throughout the U.S. are not only granted amnesty “to the max” but are also allowed to vote in all future U.S. elections throughout the U.S. It’s truly going to be much more difficult for U.S. conservatism to make a serious political comeback after all of these things truly happen throughout the U.S.
McCain is too proud and obsessed to be a failure at any leadership role—in other words,like his Dad and Grandad,he wants desperately to be a successful commander-an opportunity taken from him over Vietnam.
I think we can work with or on him—but it will be just that—work!
And who knows more about the virtue of work than conservatives?
I would agree that Oberweiss was a poor candidate, probably the biggest contributor to his loss.
I don’t live in the district, but did drive through it a lot. I heard Oberweiss’s radio ads and they were bad. All negative. Nothing about why he should be elected. Bad.
It might be only a long 2 years. After Clinton’s election in 1992, he had a democratic controlled Congress. The public got fed up and there was a Republican tidal wave in 1994. If her heinous or Barry Hussein get elected and crash the economy and wreak all kinds of havoc, history may repeat itself.
I recently saw an essay online which stated that the good economy during the Clinton years was made possible by the Republicans winning control of the Congress in 1994. The financial markets were re-assured by this GOP tidal wave, because they (the financial markets) knew that the Republicans would block the worst forms of socialism proposed by the Clintons. (Personally, I believe that the advent of the personal computer and the Internet did alot to fuel the 1990’s economic boom as well).
If the democrats re-take the White House this year, America should survive if there is a GOP groundwell in 2010. If for, whatever reason, there is no congressional GOP groundswell in 2010, then we’re screwed. (We are also screwed if it’s a RINO groundswell.....we need to elect CONSERVATIVE Republicans!)
Come back and tell me that after the November elections. I might be a drama queen but I'm definitely not a queen of denial. It's over. The Kiddie Krusaders on the college campii are going to see to that.
The “Fairness Doctrine” together with amnesty will lead to either revolution or civil war....maybe both.

Well, we have very few conservative leaders with any credibility left, so the leadership is going to have to come from the grassroots. Unfortunately, the grassroots is divided and many (most?) of them do not have a proper understanding of the Constitution or the proper role of limited gov’t in a constitutional republic (ie. basic civics).
It's in the interest of the public-school socialist monopolists to keep the students ignorant. It's up to the parents to provide kids with a basic civics education.
This election is bad news for the GOP. Obie is a bad candidate. He has lost how many races now, people have developed an image that he’s a loser, he’s tired and he’s unelectable. Equally bad though is the state of GOP politics. The Economy sucks, anyone trying to deny that will lose this election. I am not asking for bailouts, handouts or whatever, but I want to see some leadership from GWB, the Treasury and GOP in congress to address the economic issues. To me, all these economic hardships are eminating from the housing bust. The proposal on freezing mortgage rates, freezing foreclosures by Hillary will violate every free market principles and will increase the mortgage rates of 30/15-fixed. Indeed such increases have already happened. The market is beginning to price in this Hillary risk. The Hope-Now alliance proposed by Bush and Treasury is woefully inadequate. Someone has to do something fast. If there is an adequate housing solution, the stock market will go up 20% in a very short period. This will increase optimism about the economy and increase the chance of some GOP wins this fall. Furthermore, the GOP can not win without the suburban votes. The primary asset for these voters are their homes, their retirement plans. What they are feeling now is a home price decline, a stk mkt decline. GWB maybe strong on national defense, but he’s asleep at the switch for many domestic issues. He is either intellectually not curious about those issues or surround himself with the Larry Kudlow type thinking the economy is good, goldilock blah blah. If Obama is the nominee for the dems, he will have a hard time to connect with the white working folks making 50K or less, we need someone who can connect with these folks to win the general. To these folks, they don’t care about islamofacism, that;s not their security concerns; they worry about their own job security, their healthcare security and retirement security. GWB, GOP congress and to a large extent Sen. McCain just don’t get it on this issue. Iraq is important, terrorism is important, social/fiscal conservative issues are important, but combine all these can’t fight against the rising economic populism due to the economic challenges we are facing. Ignoring the impact of the bad economy on this coming election at our own perils.
This result may be in part a side effect of Illinois Obamamania. If it fades in the fall, then the seat could spring right back to the GOP in November.

Voters are probably still embarrassed that their guy, Dennis, over a period of time where the opportunity presented itself failed to do anything about the House pages, but it was just one gay blade after the other, first a Congressman, then a staffer, then another staffer, then most likely some ex-pages, then another staffer, and so on.
And it’s important to note with who we’re trading. Japan, Canada are one thing, but where’s the “free” in free trade with China? Not on the assembly lines.
wow, with an outlook like yours and others here, we will lose to the dimwits...come on, it’s up to us to get some good conservatives in there in 08. Don’t give up so quickly.
