National and California home-schooling advocates are banding together to fight a state court ruling they say could essentially outlaw the practice of allowing parents to teach their children at home.
The Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) and the Home School Association of California (HSC) say the court decision, which said home-schooling parents must have a valid state teaching license and they have no constitutional right to home-school, takes aim at the education programs many families use to get exemption from the public school system.
"We're kind of in shock," said Mike Smith, HSLDA president.
The Los Angeles-based case began when the county petitioned to have two home-schooled children enrolled in public or private school after an older sibling accused the father of abuse. A lower state court ruled against that idea, citing a constitutional right held by parents to educate their children at home. The appeals court disagreed and reversed that ruling.

You said it yourself, Socialist Indoctrination......
The leftists in this country and other countries "tolerated" home-schooling as long as the numbers were a very small percentage of the total. It is no surprise that the Marxists are putting a stop to home-schooling. I hope and pray that those with common sense prevail and take back our God given rights to teach our children at home.
Although home schoolers consitently score higher on ACT, SAT, and win national spelling bees??????????
And schools with a shortage of teachers some times hire people who are not fully accredited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“the court decision, which said home-schooling parents must have a valid state teaching license and they have no constitutional right to home-school”
The Government schools are themselves unconstitutional. So is the power of the NEA.
bttt
“And schools with a shortage of teachers some times hire people who are not fully accredited!!!!!!!!!!!!! “
My wife, one of 3 Republicans, works at the US Dept of Education. I can assure you that not only to nearly all schools hire teachers that are not certified, but many more are teaching out of area.
The Homeschoolers need legal representation to fight this idiotic law.
Homeschooling was the topic this morning on C-SPAN. The majority of callers favored `licensing’ of homeschool parents.
Funny, though, they all sounded like whiny middleaged liberal men with northeastern accents.
“All your children are belong to us!”
This whole issue will go away soon. If it stays, public schools would have 34 pupils per room versus 30 lol. Educators do not want that.
BTW what ever happened to tuition tax credits for kids in private schools or homeschools. Public indoctrination centers take huge amounts of tax money from parents that don’t have their children in public schools. We need to fire back at the indoc centers.
What’s the worst that can happen? Someone’s home-schooled by an incompetent, and comes out not knowing much of anything - in other words, same thing as public education.
That is so right it needed to be repeated a little louder.
“I hope and pray that those with common sense prevail and take back our God given rights to teach our children at home.”
Believe me, their next proposal will be to take your children AWAY from you. Think I’m kidding? There are politicians who are suggesting that right now, under the guise of “child protection,” wherein they equate religious instruction and “anti-left” rhetoric in the home to be as harmful to a child as physical and mental abuse and neglect.
Folks, we are so very close to a civl war in this country, and it will pit the left against the right. The left has organization on its side, but it is full of physical and mental cowards. The right has the guns, and the wherewithall to use them, but it lacks organization. The right can achive organization, as it is well within its ability to do so. The left, however, needs bravery, but such a virtue is impossible in a leftist. Thus, the right will win.
BTW, how is California going to be able to pay $8000 - $10,000 per student for 100,000 kids?
In answer to your question, what is going on in this country is that the ACLU, Dems and courts are driving Christians to the margins of society.
After the next two or three Supreme Court appointments, Christians will, by definition, be legally purveyors of “hate” speech.
In the next few years, Talk Radio will be fairness doctrined out of existence, it’s not going to be a happy time for the Right.
In the 90s, a very similar stunt was pulled in re Homeschooling families. CA colleges were openly declaring their refusal to admit homeschooled students based on some assinine notion that the paper work would be “too messy” to sort through, further that the parents might “lie”. Considering how many generations of students of CA pub ed have been graduated despite their illiteracy, it is considered that paperwork is more important than education, obviously.
In CA, there is one detail which must be attended to, IMHE. CA has, last I read, 66 times more lawyers than all of Japan. Sure, there’s plenty of indoctrination in CA pub schools; but many parts of that indoctrination has to do with “avoidance” of lawsuits. Meaning, students learn the linguistics of nuance in order to avoid lawsuits, thereby making them “fit” for the employment world.
This was one of the more firmly held arguments against homeschoolers in the early/mid 90s. I think there is some merit to this argument.
I therefore, taught my children at home, incorporating the multi-culti/lawsuit avoidance linguistics curriculae as a part of their education. And taught to them with MY Socratic style alongside the standard, pro-constitutionalist educational material. (This is what the pub ed schools SHOULD be doing, but they don’t). Ergo, my children were educated at home with critical thinking a standard part of every moment of every day. They understood that in CA, the fascists and socialists run most shops, and the importance of learning their jargon, ends, and goals.
So. Instead of demanding teacher/parents be “credentialed”, I propose that the state come up with specifics. “Tolerance”? “Non-offensive multi-culti language sets”?
And basic understanding of math as an emotive concept?
My kids learned all these subjects and more in addition to standard liberal arts.
It has served them well. They can tell within 2 minutes of speaking with someone if the person has a “clue”. It’s been a wonderful method whereby they can tell who to maintain contact with and who not.
Again, these subjects were taught on MY terms. :)
Please. No facts. This is all about feeeeeeeelings.
