Presidential candidate Alan Keyes may be leaving the GOP. In a conference call last night, Keyes is said to have told supporters that staying in the Republican Party would be "an occasion of sin" and he's ready to bolt. Keyes ... reportedly wants no part in selecting the "type of deodorant we need to make a stinking candidate acceptable to conservatives." A Keyes supporter confirms to Radar that the former Reagan administration official "stated in the conference call that he could no longer remain in the Republican Party."
As for what's next, a third party bid seems like a good bet. Keyes hinted at the possibility on a radio program in January, and an e-mail sent out by the campaign after last night's conference call ... included a link for supporters who "want to vote for Alan as your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice on the Constitution Party presidential poll." A Keyes message board commenter who claims to have been on the conference call last night said regarding the possibility of a Constitution Party run that, "Alan asked us to pray about it." ...

You are absolutely right. And what you said is what I’ve been telling people, word-for-word, all through this campaign. In fact, I have friends who have now picked up the phrase from me.

When Ronald Reagan bolted the Democrat Party it was due to the shift away from the values traditionally espoused by his party. Compromise, learning to get along, listening to the other guy even when you know he’s wrong were no longer tenable positions for him. His ideas did not resonate with the ever-shifting beliefs of his fellow democrats. The next best thing for him was to defect from the party.
No doubt some democrats thought it the height of vanity on his part for him to think that his opinions were too sacred for him to be so dogmatic as to not stick around and play nice.
No, he didn’t run on a third party “vanity ticket”. What he did was run (away from one party and toward another) on principle.
He got over 10 votes in the Texas primary, which is 10 more than he’ll get if he tries to get on the ballot as an Indpenedent in November.

Lots of politicians switch parties. That has nothing to do with this discussion or the points I made.
If Keyes tries a third-party run, it will be an exercise in futility. Surely you aren’t comparing Reagan to that?
We have enough problems this year without Keyes making things worse with a vanity run. We certainly don’t need more blowhards spitting in the wind.
Your argument supposes that McCain can win. He cannot. I would much prefer voting for an actual and qualified Conservative, rather than writing in a name, and I would like to have a candidate who has the ability to win in November.
For those reasons I would be happy to support a third party- To block any chance of a win by the corrupted and intransigent GOP, and to provide an avenue for real success.

no, that’s Alan’s problem...he is angry and pompously self righteous in what he sees. He is not patient and willing to work on the decent people in the republican party hoping to wake them up. There is a strength born of patient perception that has great energy to to good, but he comes across as pushy and angry and in denial about it.
Why not, everything except that that could go wrong for Republicans in this election year has already gone wrong, so Keyes may as well do it up right and totally blow the election before the final segment of the process even gets started.
Is there any chance that someone could persuade Keyes to switch parties before 2012? I really like the guy as a person, but the Democrats really do deserve his unfailing election year antics more than we do. Maybe he and little Ralphy Nader could run on a 3rd party ticket and split off a dozen or so of President Obama's votes in the 2012 general election.

Keyes is a man of principle and passion who speaks for the Conservative ideals that made this Country great. Your characterization paints a picture of one who is pathetic.
There’s a lot of material on his website that’s worth reviewing. I regret he’s not on my media channels.

The Republican party is at a point where it may suffer long term setbacks from elements within. Not because it’s been infiltrated by the enemy, but because it’s adopting an agenda that will destroy our liberty. The GOP would be wise to pay attention to the signals that matter. AK is launching flares.
For the sake of perfunctory obligation, I will vote for McCain. There’s no short term remedy for the crap-hole we’re in and taking any action or inaction that will help the other party on its road to Socialism is not acceptable. It’s going to take upwards of a decade or two to fix this mess. Treating Keyes like he’s some kind of disoriented Conservative relic from days long gone is the wrong approach.
McCain should represent the low point for the Conservative movement of our time. Hopefully, he’ll win and temper his Liberal propensities. Hopefully, we’ll have the heart and mind to rebuild the party.
We need a list of all consevarives (of any party) running for Senate, Congress and for State elections. I don’t care if they are Yellow Dogs , independents etc.... We need to support Conservatives and get them in office. Does someone have such a list?
