Presidential candidate Alan Keyes may be leaving the GOP. In a conference call last night, Keyes is said to have told supporters that staying in the Republican Party would be "an occasion of sin" and he's ready to bolt. Keyes ... reportedly wants no part in selecting the "type of deodorant we need to make a stinking candidate acceptable to conservatives." A Keyes supporter confirms to Radar that the former Reagan administration official "stated in the conference call that he could no longer remain in the Republican Party."
As for what's next, a third party bid seems like a good bet. Keyes hinted at the possibility on a radio program in January, and an e-mail sent out by the campaign after last night's conference call ... included a link for supporters who "want to vote for Alan as your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice on the Constitution Party presidential poll." A Keyes message board commenter who claims to have been on the conference call last night said regarding the possibility of a Constitution Party run that, "Alan asked us to pray about it." ...
There was no need for Keyes to go there. He was an oportunistic carpetbagger who's ego got the better of him.
Neither. I do know that both will do amnesty, which will finish this country as we know it.
Back in the 1990s, I would have said (of leaving the GOP) that it was a futile, wasted gesture.
Nowadays, I am wondering how long it will be until I do the same thing.
And for all those McCain naysayers - this election isn’t about McCain v Obamilary it is about who gets to put four new Justices on the USSC.
All the naysayers, party jumpers, etc can do as they please as it’s their right but the truth it is will come down to one of two people as president, either the democratic or republican candidate. Because of that I’m voting for the Republican because I think he will do the following two things better than a Democrat.
a] Nominate a more conservative person for the SCOTUS
b] Support our military men and women
This is what I’ve felt the need to be doing the past few elections. Dole, W, W again. I couldn’t take it anymore. My vote has and will continue to be a vote of conscience—and message. I will look for/pray for conservatives to make their way into Congress and LEGISLATE conservative principles. I will expect that they (elected conservative LEGISLATORS) will provide the loyal (to the CONSTITUTION) opposition to any measures put forth by the elected figurehead (president) that fly in the face of national security, national sovereignty, CONSTITUTIONally mandated freedoms and protections, or that threaten to move us (further) away from these.
I realize that Keyes can’t win. I realize, too, that America can’t win with any of the current choices. Something else I’m beginning to realize is that our country is inundated, INNUNDATED, with individuals who seem bent on fleeing the field of battle, looking to the government for a piece of the American dream, seeking to have all responsibility lifted off of their stooped shoulders because they haven’t the stomach for LIVING life as FREE men and women. These folks are everywhere. They are weak. They are fools. They want us to come off the battlefield in the Middle East because they fear reprisals. They don’t understand the reality (that reprisals have not come SINCE we’ve joined the battle.) They want this and that taken care of by the government. They fail to grasp that all of the THIS AND THAT comes with mighty long, costly strings that actually strangle the very freedoms we’ve historically enjoyed in America. Their soft hearts long for the ideals of peace, unity, love, equality but their dull minds fail to grasp that these come by sacrifice, duty, responsiblity and sometimes the shedding of blood. And these folks are everywhere (John Edwards’ 2 Americas). Each of the remaining candidates will, in their own way, take us further along this path, create more of this type of American (be they legal or illegal) and create what is fast becoming a steeper descent toward the end of our nation, our nation’s sovereignty, our precious freedom.
So, my vote for Keyes is to express to both parties that I detest you. I loathe what you stand for (Democrat) and what you are coming to stand for (Republican). I find you to be what is wrong with our country on so many levels. You are betraying the trust you were granted when you were elected. You have shown me that you are not up to the challenge. You have shown me that you have failed the American people. At this critical time, I am willing to send out this message because, while we may suffer further in the near future (under the guidance of whoever is elected in November), I believe that that bit of suffering may (I said MAY) not be fatal. There may still be an America left when you set forth your programs of socialism, communism, liberalism. Yes, I believe that there still may be time to bring some of my fellow countrymen back to their senses (when they see how you’ve messed it up.) And maybe, just maybe, in 2012 we will see a realization by just enough Americans that the only hope left for this country is for America to follow the path of the principles that brought us to the place of greatness where we were once the envy of the world. This, to my thinking, is what the conservative faces in this election.
I don’t think you understand politics. I don’t think Mr. Keyes does either. Debates are not a university intellectual exercise, they are a means to gain votes. Keyes has never done a good job of that.
I could get on board with a McCain-Keyes ticket, absolutely.
Around here there would have been a lot of folks unhappy about whoever got nominated!
I never saw so many complaints about so many candidates in my life.
Some people just enjoy being unhappy.

If Keyes does this, it would be nothing but a self-centered vanity run.
I am constantly amazed at how self-centered we have become. Way too many of us act like little kids who take their marbles home and pout if everybody won’t play by their rules.
That’s not how it works in a democratic society, folks. People who want to live in freedom and peace learn to get along, to compromise, to listen to the other guy even when he’s dead wrong.
Sometimes your guy or your ideas just don’t resonate with all your countrymen. And when that happens, you need to play nice and work for the next-best. This is not a perfect world.
In the primaries, a vanity run to get your ideas heard is appropriate. Ron Paul is an example — goofy but interesting. Alan Keyes needs to find another outlet for his views, because messing with this election is pure selfishness.
In the general election, a vanity run would only siphon a few votes, but in a close election could put Hillary or Obama in the White House.
Are you going to ask this of each of the “...so many...” who complained about the candidates? Or is it maybe that the “...so many...” are on to something.
Abolishing the Electoral College would be a Constitutional matter...therefore legislative and outside of the domain of any President.
If Alan Keyes runs with the Constitution Party, my conscience will allow me to vote for him IF John McCain does not pick an acknowledged, significant, viable, CONSERVATIVE VP running mate.

Would I prefer more David Souters to more Ruth Ginsburgs? I don’t think that’s much of a choice.

Actually I’m an optimist and one of those dreaded Evangelicals that the party is so upset with. You know, the ones that aren’t afraid to vote their conscience because , they believe the Lord has a plan and will put who he wants in office.
If he were the CP nominee, and were on enough state ballots in the US to significant enough theoretical electoral votes to capture the Presidency, and despite his polling numbers, I have to admit that I would indeed vote for him as the LEAST of THREE EVILS: McCAIN, CLINTON or KEYES.
And which of these do you think McCain won't support, if it makes Kennedy and Liebermann invite him over for dinner, and the NYT shower him with praise?
