BERKELEY, Calif. -- After a bombing at a Marine recruiting center at Times Square in New York City, Bay Area military supporters came to Berkeley City Hall Thursday to express concerns that the city's Marine recruiting center could suffer a similar attack.

Melanie Morgan, a former talk show host at KSFO radio in San Francisco and member of the conservative grass roots political organization "Move America Forward," said she and her group are very concerned.

...continued...

[Councilman] Wozniak told Morgan and her group that he felt the situation warranted extra security.

"We would not want something like this to happen in Berkeley," Wozniak said. "I think it deserves some additional protection."

NBC11 found several Berkeley police officers stationed in front of or near the Marine recruiting center Thursday.

Councilman Wozniak... ya THINK!? After the Berkeley City Council denounced the Marines and aligned itself with Code Pink and their supporters you believe the situation "deserves additional protection." Hindsight is 20/20, afterall.

Let's just hope the Berkeley PD really does step up security at the Marine OSO. Their "neutral" position thusfar has contributed to several accounts of lawlessness and has emboldened the anti-war activists, who are growing more violent.

Let's not forget that Code Pink has announced thier intent to protest 24/7 beginning March 10 for one week in front of the Marine OSO.

It's time for the Feds to send reinforcements from the U.S. Marshalls, FBI, and Homeland Security. The Fed Gov't is being naive by thinking these incidents are isolated.

Best reinforcements are armed citizens.

They won’t tell the perp to freeze.

The Berkley recruiting center is probably safe. Bombing that center might injure some of the code pink lunatics parked in front.

Probably there to protect the Pinkos as they go about physically denying access to a public place.

Yup. Check Michelle Malkins' blog on that topic.

I cannot fathom the paralysis exhibited by the government in dealing with obvious sedition, bordering on treason, exhibited by Soros-financed groups like the Code Pinkos. I've come to believe, as do our enemies, that the U.S. government is incapable of acting to defend Americans' own national interests within our own borders if it might possibly offend some voting bloc.

Hardly needed. Just let the Marines defend themselves and those who would have business with them. No change in laws required. For one thing, the recruiting station is under federal jurisdiction, arguably military jurisdiction. The Posse Commitatus law does not apply to the Marines or Navy, although by Navy regs the same restrictions apply.

Perhaps, just to be politically correct, the Governator could be asked to assign National Guard troops to protect the recruiting station and the public. That would be perfectly legal. Issue them with live ammo.

Or maybe just do a nice test of the new crowd control weapon, I'm sure the Air Force would gladly loan it to the CA ANG. It's a microwave weapon which makes the targets feel as if their skin is on fire, but doesn't seem to actually do any lasting damage.

It would make great video if nothing else. Dozens of Code Pinkos screaming, running and puking. I'd pay good money, to go to the Marines' Toys for Tots program or another charity of their choosing, to see that.

Their activities would not have been tolerated under the administrations of libtard heroes Wilson and FDR.

Hmmm, well if some whack-job is going to do this, he might consider removing the entire filthy city, so we won’t have to look at, or listen to, the ant-American Berkeley treasonous communists any more....

It’s got to be safe. Berkeley is a gun-free, nuclear-free and a bomb-free city. It’s all peace, love and understanding man.

I've often wondered why the Marines haven't provided their own security in Berkeley. The retired Marine officers I've asked have told me 'because the (anti-war) demonstrations are under local jurisdiction.' As such, local authorities would have to request military protection, which would then need to be handled through the chain of command.

I'm interested in hearing more about The Posse Commitatus law. If you have links I'd appreciate them. I've focused on enforcing current laws in my letter writing to officials and will include The Posse Commitatus law when I've had an opportunity to research it.

Just now heading out for my 14-hour shift. I won't be able to spend time here while at work. Will be back this evening.

It's a Reconstruction era (1878) law which prohibits use of the Army (latter amended to include the Air Force, but Never the Marines or Navy) to enforce the law. It was actually aimed at the practice of the local sheriff, often corrupt, in borrowing troops from the local garrison to do his dirty work. There are numerous "war on (some) drugs" exceptions as well. For example the Air Force can provide information on "unscheduled/unknown" aircraft coming in to the US to Border Patrol, Customs and/or DEA, as long as the information is gained as a part of normal military operations/training, not on specially laid on efforts. Of course the AWACS guys often train near the Southern Border, including the Gulf of Mexico. :)

The Law itself (w/o) the exceptions which are in other parts of the US code.

A Rand Monograph on the law.

Me too. Deadly force authorized ought to do it. If they choose to do it themselves, the Marines are good at that and no assistance needed.

The petition

We, the undersigned condemn the Berkeley City Council’s treasonous attack on US Marine Recruiters stationed in their city. We ask that Congress cut off funds from any and all municipal entity within the confines of the city of Berkeley, California, until such time as the city council withdraws it’s action.

The City Council has voted to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting station is not welcome and “if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests.”

The measure passed last week by a vote of 8-1.

The council also voted to explore enforcing a city anti-discrimination law, focusing on the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

In a separate item, the council voted, also 8-1, to give the Marxist protest group Code Pink a parking space in front of the recruiting office once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week.

Thank you for the ping. This is a very real threat in my opinion, there are so many liberal nuts in Northern California. I saw a story on the news last night that police arrested a college student at UC Davis because he was making homemade bombs in his home. The 60’s hippies appear to have bred a new generation of anarchists, only much more dangerous.

Hmmm...You know how some testaurants and other places of business have used classical music to chase away loitering crowds of rowdty youths?...I was thinkin the Marines could do the same, and hook up speakers to play Slim Whitman, Patriotic music, and Frank Sinatra music 24/7. >Bo)
