To the GOP's self-righteous Purists

If there's a single thread that runs through the e-mails I receive from peevish Republicans, it's that none of the current candidates possesses the conservative purity of Ronald Reagan. One could almost get the idea that Dutch was betrayed by Pontius Pilate and crucified on Calvary. But that wasn't exactly the case. The fact of the matter is that Gov. Reagan gave Gov. Jerry Brown a run for his money – or should I say our money? – when it came to raising taxes here in California. But, in spite of the additional revenue, he was responsible in large part for the streets of our cities being turned into public latrines by the unwashed, the unwanted and the insane when, to save a few bucks, he oversaw the closing of California's mental hospitals. He also signed the nation's most liberal abortion bill. Although he had a change of heart a scant six months later, one never hears him condemned for flip-flopping ...

...

What truly confounds me are those cuckoos who would prefer to see such socialists as Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama win the election than to sully themselves by voting for a Republican who was only their second or third or even fourth choice. To them I say, before proving that you place your own ego gratification above what's best for America, keep in mind that most of the Supreme Court justices are in their 70s or even, in the case of John Paul Stevens, fast approaching 90. Do you really want one of those two Democrats stacking the Court for the foreseeable future? Presidents come and go, but justices go on seemingly forever. Kennedy and Scalia have been on the bench since Reagan put them there. Stevens, for heaven's sake, was appointed during the ...

no such thing as a democrat who supports the war. and the war against islamofascism is a heck of a lot more important than whether someone voted for every single tax cut.

If I had to choose between Lieberman or hillary/obama, i’d also vote for Joe in order to protect the security of this country.

oh dear...I guess that means I’ll never enter conservative heaven and receive 72 Ann Coulters.

Wriggle and lie as they might, Team Juan remains fundamentally incapable of coherently reconciling the gargantuan inherent contradiction of their chosen talking point(s), here on FR. On the one hand, they metronomically insist that we genuine conservatives are "insignificant" and "fringe" aspects of the Republican party, and that -- therefore -- it is no longer necessary for their anointed liberal candidate (McCain, in this instance) to pay any serious heed whatsoever to our stated desires and concerns.

On the other hand, however: our collective votes (and campaign $$$) are so unbelievably essential to the outcome of this race and The Safeguarding of the Universe Entire, evidently, that the very NOTION of our voluntarily withholding either/both from He-Who-Is-Called-Juan is enough to drive them into spluttering, incoherent fits of online rage, daily.

Obviously, then: one of their two oft-stated positions is nothing more than a baldfaced (and laughably ineffectual) lie.

My money's on #1; how about you...? ;)

I'm still voting against McCain!!!

Sure! We've already had a pro-amnesty, divorced, silently Christian, fiscally conservative but socially moderate, cross-aisle-working, moderate-Supreme-Court-Justice-appointing, maverick, union-leading, war veteran, septagenerian in the White House...

And we all know that occupant - Ronald Wilson Reagan - was a terrible President, right?

The best antidote is to respect the VETS for defending our rights, including the right to vote for who we want to vote for. They have the same rights we have....the difference is that they have sacrificed to protect them. They do deserve respect.

It’s despicable and laughable to think that any veteran or active serviceperson needs their respect.

If they served for our country, they also served us and our families. RussP should be asking what he can do for them, not telling them who they should vote for.

carry on in his proud, storied tradition: farting noisily, and believing they've just summoned thunderbolts. ;)

ROTFLMAO! I do admire your turn of phrase.

Reagan was RINO.

He made the Govt larger and granted amnesty. He was over 21 and knew congress would not hold up their end.

He bailed in Beirut which Osama credits ( Peter Arnett interview) as giving him his base.

Ronald could not win in the GOP today.

No, just a better alternative. Nice try.

If everyone were like you and willing to give McCain their full support without any concessions regarding his VP pick or the party platform, then McCain will never give the conservatives anything. McCain HATES Conservatives. So to vote for him without him giving us at least the concession of a reasonbly conservative VP is to abandon all principles on the altar of political expediency. As long as McCain knows that there are RussP's out there, the conservative movement is dead on arrival at the convention.

No McCain is not the better alternative. 2012 may just be the better alternative. In the next four years I could make a fortune on gold futures and we could get a guy like Duncan Hunter as our standard bearer in 2012.

McCain had better give me something to vote for, or he will not get my vote.

Oh, so I’m not allowed to disagree with a “Navy vet” here on FR. Wait a minute ... I though they fought for my very right to disagree.

I happen to be a Navy vet myself, by the way, but it was a long time ago and I wasn’t in for long, so I don’t make an issue of it.

their current tactic of tantruming all over the FR boards on a daily basis and referring to any/everyone disagreeing with them as "purists" and "extremists" just ain't bringing in the ol' campaign dinero

You're that thin skinned, are you?

If you're genuinely incapable of seeing how Team Juan's daily hectoring and browbeating of the party's conservative voting base is anything but counterproductive... then: the problem is less likely to be "thin skin" on my part, but rather a thicj head on your own.

It is inconceivable Team McCain could be discounting any part of the conservative constitency.

You are either staggeringly disingenuous; terrifyingly ill-informed; or (quite possibly) both. Not only have I already provided you with multiple links to the very statements in question: one of your own has been busily slandering a Navy vet right in this very thread, solely because the latter doesn't want to cast a ballot on behalf of Juan "And None Dare Call It Amnesty" McCain. Good lord, but you people are flakes!

Again: "... or, failing that: y'all can just go right on whizzing this election down your pantslegs. I sleep just as easily, either way." Lather, rinse, repeat.

that’s why I’m voting FOR McCain.

So when he picks Lieberman as his VP, you'll be happy?

"Karma's a real b!tch, ain't it, kiddies...?"

I'd lay odds that McCain would have beem the last to mess with campaign funding had he known what was in store for him. Payback couldn't have come at a worse possible time. and the sad truth is that we might be forced to go with McCain even without any promises and still lose. I can't remember when I've felt soooo despondent.

I will never vote for a man who wrote a bill CENSORING the NRA and Right to Life’s criticizing politicians during an election.

I’ll “hold my nose” for a lot of things, but to actually pull the lever for a man who does not believe in the freedom of speech to criticize politicians...that would be a betrayal of everything I believe in, everything about this country I love so much.

Let McCain run for president of Russia, he’d fit right in there. They, too, censor groups that criticize politicians.

The 1st Amendment’s right to freely express our criticism of government is our most profound right, yet here is a man who wrote a bill FORBIDDING Right to Life and the NRA from running ads that criticize politicians during an election. That is absolutely un-American, and 50 years ago it would have gotten him ostracized and voted out of office.

Yet today we have people actually urging us to vote for this man, who thinks it is the government’s duty to outlaw the NRA and Right to Life’s criticizing politicians.

Amazing...doesn’t this sicken you, in any way? Have you so truly lost sight of what it is to be an American, with American ideals, that you would actually vote to put a man in office who wants to censor groups that criticize politicians???

Where would America be today if Common Sense had been McCain-Feingold’ed out of existence? If the Federalist Papers had been declared to be special-interest control of governerment and censored, like McCain/Feingold censors the NRA?

Can you truly not see how evil it is, to want to outlaw political speech that criticizes politicians? How un-American that concept is???

I am truly scared for our country when so many cannot see how evil John McCain’s anti-free speech ideals are.

Ed

You didn’t “disagree”. You said you had “little respect” and held him accountable for stopping Hillary or Obama.

IMO, It’s just a way for the GOP to try to get us back on the reservation. It used to be “a vote for Hillary”. They used that ace up in 2006 though. Now they are using our military, to try to frighten us in to toeing the line. That really irritates me.
