To the GOP's self-righteous Purists

If there's a single thread that runs through the e-mails I receive from peevish Republicans, it's that none of the current candidates possesses the conservative purity of Ronald Reagan. One could almost get the idea that Dutch was betrayed by Pontius Pilate and crucified on Calvary. But that wasn't exactly the case. The fact of the matter is that Gov. Reagan gave Gov. Jerry Brown a run for his money – or should I say our money? – when it came to raising taxes here in California. But, in spite of the additional revenue, he was responsible in large part for the streets of our cities being turned into public latrines by the unwashed, the unwanted and the insane when, to save a few bucks, he oversaw the closing of California's mental hospitals. He also signed the nation's most liberal abortion bill. Although he had a change of heart a scant six months later, one never hears him condemned for flip-flopping ...

...

What truly confounds me are those cuckoos who would prefer to see such socialists as Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama win the election than to sully themselves by voting for a Republican who was only their second or third or even fourth choice. To them I say, before proving that you place your own ego gratification above what's best for America, keep in mind that most of the Supreme Court justices are in their 70s or even, in the case of John Paul Stevens, fast approaching 90. Do you really want one of those two Democrats stacking the Court for the foreseeable future? Presidents come and go, but justices go on seemingly forever. Kennedy and Scalia have been on the bench since Reagan put them there. Stevens, for heaven's sake, was appointed during the ...

Who did you support when all this first started?

“I can’t believe that you would sit there and admonish at a navyvet who defends our constitution and bill of rights? Even they have a right to vote for who they want, whether we agree or not.”

Sorry, but I have a real hard time respecting a “Navy Vet” who doesn’t want to stop Hillary or Osamabama from becoming Commander in Chief. That means CinC of the Navy!

Nonsense. See my post #11.

You're right. Post 11 is nonsense.

Maybe you should push the abuse button on yourself and have the mods remove it so you don't have to embarrass yourself like that.

Fellow conservatives should quit being full of hubris and decide that 50% is better than nothing. Frankly after the recent William F. Buckley slander on Free Republic I begin to wonder about the mental health of my comrades. The most endearing quality of conservatives in the past was a sense of optimism, alas that has all but faded. I have a blessed life, I am only 1 out of 20 people on the planet that is fortunate enough to live in this great land, 2 girls in college both for nursing, a wife who endures as an RN taking care of correctional patient’s and glad she’s not tempted to put pillows over the faces on a daily basis. Thats real compassion when a women tends to thieves, rapist and worst. I come here for fellow conservative thought and find infighting and petty BS, thats depressing. The reason we may lose this election cycle will be more a product of self prophecy than the failures of Republicans to be true conservatives.

It is disgusting, but remember, it's probably a result of the tainted Geritol they're drinking along with McCain.

It was a politically strategic move to all of a sudden switch sides—they should be ashamed (as if they had the guts be ashamed). Their goal is to garner support aka votes from people who don’t research the history of candidates (meaning those who only use mainstream media, and soundbytes). They are ruthless. It still doesn’t change lieberman’s past. I wouldn’t want his support, and I’m offended that mccain took it on behalf of republicans or conservatives.

“I also refuse to allow all conservative gains made in the past 30 years to be flushed down the crapper just because I’m personally offended by our winning nominee.”

McCain will flush them faster than H&B, and cause less flap in doing it.

lieberman supported the war in iraq. That’s why the dems turned on him, remember?

And McCain is a democrat(R) who supports the war. That explains their long friendship.

Well, if you’re looking for a savior for President, good luck to you. I don’t need a President for my savior, so I can live with the idea of voting “against” Hillary/Osamabama by voting “for” McCain. It a political matter, not a religious matter.

well if you have a problem with corporate welfare and deficits and entitlements going out of control, vote for mcCain. Otherwise vote for any of the other republicans in congress.

Because Bush and Hastert and Duncan Hunter and all of these so called hard core conservatives had no problem voting to expand medicare when it is about to go broke.

that’s why I’m voting FOR McCain.

current tactic of tantruming all over the FR boards on a daily basis and referring to any/everyone disagreeing with them as "purists" and"

You're that thin skinned, are you?

I read the stuff hurled back and forth by everybody. There ain't no saints in this fight.

But, I've got to go look at your links. It is inconceivable Team McCain could be discounting any part of the conservative constitency. But, if you're posting it, there must be something there. so I gotto go find it.

... or, failing that: y'all can just go right on whizzing this election down your pantslegs. I sleep just as easily, either way.

See?

OK, so McCain is trending down at a 65% ACU conservative rating. Why don’t you take a look at Hillary or Osamabama’s ACU ratings? I guarantee you that even 65% looks darn good from there!

Sorry. With McCain, it is obvious that we have no offense against liberalism. I'm now thinking about a strong defense. The thought of McCain calling the defensive plays doesn't inspire me.

And I have a hard time supporting someone who enjoys the support of lieberman. What does lieberman do? Stand by, smile handsomely for the cameras, and say nothing? He's recognized as a former dem VP candidate, and dem senator. He's associated with (gag) gore.

Mccain needs to be held accountable, stand up for CONSERVATIVE values, be willing to defend our borders, etc etc.. He's hangin out with libs way too much for me. As I said before, this is a sad election.

When they sent out surveys to republicans (as they did me), I wonder what the results were? Because mccain sure doesn't seem to align himself with what I thought were conservatives values.

I just don't understand the direction conservative voters are taking, and the lashing out at vets BECAUSE they are vets is offensive.

A history lesson is in order..perhaps a read of the federalist papers or something. anything but this.

It appears to me that YOU are the one who is looking for a Savior.

You've picked John McCain as the guy who will SAVE YOU from Hillary/Obama. Frankly, I can live with Hillary/Obama if necessary.

I've decided I'm not going to vote for McCain simply to save us from the Hildebeast. He's got to give me something to vote FOR. If he picks a decent conservative VP, then I will vote for the decent conservative VP. If he picks a liberal and snubs the conservatives he needs to get elected, then I will buy Gold.

The price of gold quadrupled during the 4 years of Carter. Just think what it will do during an Obama/Clinton presidency.

Voting for McCain *is* the “defense” against liberalism at the Presidential level. It’s called voting defensively and cutting your losses. Sometimes you just need to do that.

Again, I repeat that McCain has a lifetime ACU conservative rating of 82%. And no, I’m not claiming that’s great, but compared to the ‘rat alternatives it’s stellar.
