KAUFMAN A family is on an emotional rollercoaster as they deal with the death of a wife and mother who was killed as she drove a teenager to the hospital after he was shot by an elderly neighbor while walking across the mans lawn.
The 41-year-old pediatric nurse was pronounced dead at the scene after the Nissan pickup she was driving collided with a Ford pickup Saturday night in Kaufman.
According to a Texas Department of Public Safety report, June Nalls was driving west in the 3000 block of Texas Highway 243 en route to Kaufman Presbyterian Hospital when she collided with a truck driven by Agustin Renteria, 27.
Renteria was arrested and charged with felony failure to stop and render aid.
DPS officials in Terrell said Nalls son Devon, 16, was transported with minor injuries and Brandon Robinson was air lifted to Parkland Hospital in Dallas for the gunshot wound under his left arm and injuries sustained in the accident.
Sgt. Bryan Francis of the Kaufman County Sheriffs Department said his agency was contacted in reference to the shooting about 10:40 p.m. Saturday in the 5000 block of Texas Highway 243.
Francis said deputies learned that a 74-year-old home owner saw people unknown to him on his property and fired a single shot through the window.
Deputies later discovered the individual having been shot in his left side along with a friend ran to the house next door where he was staying. The friends mother (Mrs. Nalls), the friend and the shot individual got in a small pickup and began driving toward the hospital, he said.
The womans husband, Mark Nalls, told police his wife thought it would be riskier to wait for an ambulance than to drive the teen to the hospital.
Family spokesperson Brian Nalls said his family is well known in Kaufman and Junes death has impacted the community.
Theres a lot of attachment to the Nalls name, and this is directly affecting the entire community, Brian Nalls said.
He said the family cannot understand why the neighbor fired at someone outside his home.
The family thinks this is partly a tragic incident, but shooting wildly out of windows is not a good way to protect your home, he said.
Brian Nalls continued saying it was not in the neighbors character to act without regard to human life.
That is probably why the boys felt safe crossing his yard, because they knew him, he said.
Authorities have said the teens were not committing a crime when the shooting occurred.
Nalls said the funeral is set for Wednesday at Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home in Kaufman.
The family has yet to set up a tragedy fund, but added that Mark Nalls is on disability after being crushed by an electrical transformer while he was restoring power to the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Katrina.
It is like the rug just keeps getting pulled out from under this family, Brian Nalls said.
Good God...
Dementia of the old man?
This is in my neck of the woods....and from what I “heard” ...... the driver who hit Mrs. Nalls was drunk... which is why he didn’t stop to render aid.
Sounds like it was the other guy’s fault:
“Renteria was arrested and charged with felony failure to stop and render aid.”
Poor family. Prayers for them all.

drunk.......and illegal?
What a shame.
prayers for the family.
I hate to say that it wouldn't surprise me...
“Dementia of the old man?”
That was my first thought. And I wonder if the lady that was killed ran a red light or too fast and caused the accident.
Oh, ok. Thanks. Probably illegal to boot.
Terrible.
Prayers Said.

Wow..
Neighbor shoots kid for walking on his lawn, Mom rushes kid to hospital, and she is killed after colliding with someone, (most likely an illegal alien) and this guys leaves the scene of a brutal accident and is arrested?
Wow...Nice neighborhood.
I’m guessing “felony failure to stop and render aid” is commonly called “hit and run” involving an injury accident. I’m willing to bet a large sum that this turd was an illegal. As a cop in phoenix I can tell you 60-70% percent of hit and runs involve illegals.
Another Norwegian doing the "work" Americans won't do, I guess.
I heard on the news over the weekend, that it’s against the law to carry a concealed weapon in Texas? That you are only allowed to have them at home? Is this true???
You need a permit (shall-issue, easy to get for the law-abiding) to carry a concealed pistol upon your person in Texas. Open carry of a pistol is illegal. Open carry of a long gun is permitted with the usual restrictions (can’t bring it into a school, court, prison, etc).
However, you may have a pistol or long gun (or as many as you wish) in your car and your home and your place of business without a permit or any government permission whatsoever.
Whoever said that CCW was illegal in Texas was an idiot and needs to be beaten by a gang of illegals chanting “What’s the frequency, Kenneth?”
I have no doubt. They do it here because they know there's a chance they might get away and avoid deportation. In Mexico, they run because an accident is an automatic ticket to jail.
When I visited Mexico back in the 80's...we were going to rent a jeep to go sight-seeing. The guy who owned the rental shop told us to abandon the car and run if we had an accident.....for we'd probably get a lengthy jail term....no matter whose fault it was. We decided against the rental and rode a tour bus instead. :)
A few months ago, I was reading an issue of my old hometown newspaper. It listed a prior DUI checkpoint the state police had set up on a major highway artery and the names of all those charged. One name was not hispanic and that person was charged with DUI and actually had a driver's license and insurance. The other 10 had no license and no insurance, and one had a warrant for the same thing in a neighboring jurisdiction.
