But the "'98" soaped onto their windshields and a surprise change in Mexican import rules have turned a single year's worth of used cars into pick of the used-car lot.

Beginning Monday, only cars built in 1998 — none older and none newer — can be legally imported into Mexico. Car dealers were given notice only a month ago....

Mexico - Just buying cars no American will buy. An excellent example of the one way trade policies our lame-brained Gov't permits. We allow everything in without tariff and they protect their markets at every turn. It is the same with every other trading partner of the U.S. - We import cheap, tariff-free goods (And Illegals) and export our jobs and manufacturing base. Our manufactured goods are subject to either outright tariffs or protective, non-tariff rules that make our goods uncompetitive. Food is another story.

Even more reason not to drive your vehicle across the border. Auto theft will definitely be on the rise.

So, this is why I have been seeing strings of old cars and trucks on I20 heading to El Paso. Driving the best one towing another and followed by two others doing the same.

It is in the article. Some sort of twisted rationale put forth by Mexican Car Dealers to essentially protect their markets from Ginny competition.

Well it seems like anything newer is a threat to Mexican car builders and anything older will just end up in the dumpster. This is a funny quote from the article explaining the Mexican POV: we needed to “stop the accelerated conversion of our country into the world’s biggest automotive garbage dump.”

LOL

I just know my old stolen SCOUT II is on the backroads of Mexico hauling goats or grass.
Or maybe it is at the bottom of some lake here with a catfish setting in the driver’s seat.

Very typical-you do realize this violates NAFTA-right? Of course our government only goes after American companies that violate the so called free trade treaties.

They run I81 south like that 24-7 and have been doing it for years, cops never pull them over. I don't think a virgina cop would stop them if they were dragging a dead body behind the truck.

Typical protectionist dribble.

You do realize the US violates NAFTA on trucking and an assortment of issues.

Liberalization on cars was part of NAFTA. And like many parts of it implementation has been pushed back by retarded protectionist/socialist.
