Explosion, fire reported in Waukegan mall (Illinois)
ABC 7 Chicago ^ | 28 February 2008

Posted on 02/28/2008 11:28:57 AM PST by SE Mom

WAUKEGAN, Ill. -- Firefighters from several departments are battling what appeared to be an explosion and fire at a shopping plaza early Thursday afternoon. The fire is burning at 1926 Grand Ave. in the northern suburb, a shopping plaza home to Tuxedo World, Cleopatra's Unisex Hair Salon, Cellular Concepts and a travel agency. Authorities reported there are several injuries. Reports of a structure collapse could not be confirmed. Authorities have closed Grand Avenue between Martin and Lewis avenues, and crews from People's Gas are on the scene because firefighters fear a gas leak.

Waukegan is pretty far north from Chi-town... I don’t remember the exact distance, but I’m thinking about 100 miles or close.

Hopefully no deaths or injuries. Just an FYI sometimes Tuxedo shops have dry cleaning facilities in them which could explain (to some small degree) the explosion.

I’m not sure but it’s too close to our Naval base.

Sheesh- I dunno- but it seems a tad reactionary. This looks like a nasty gas explosion. Period.
OR- hairspray etc...extremely flammable stuff.

You’re right.

Let’s not be prepared for another one and not investigate all possibilities.

Yeah, my son was at the Navy Recruit Training Command at Naval Station Great Lakes. I remember that Waukegan was only a few miles away from there.

“Around my area, one guy’s house was blown to virtually nothing in a gas explosion”

Same here. We had a neighbor a couple of houses down lose his house to one...thankfully he was on vacation at the time.

Waukegan is about 40 miles north of downtown Chicago. It’s the midway point between Chciago and Milwaukee.

All I’m saying is...

Even breaking news indicates a gas explosion.

But FReepers want to throw down keywords like wot and terrorism all for what?

Some people need to unbunch their panites and not jump to conclusions.
