For decades, conventional wisdom has held that daylight-saving time, which begins March 9, reduces energy use. But a unique situation in Indiana provides evidence challenging that view: Springing forward may actually waste energy.(snip)
(A University of California-Santa Barbara study of daylight savings time was conducted during the recent change in Indiana)
Having the entire state switch to daylight-saving time each year, rather than stay on standard time, costs Indiana households an additional $8.6 million in electricity bills.
"I've never had a paper with such a clear and unambiguous finding as this," says Mr. Kotchen, who presented the paper at a National Bureau of Economic Research conference this month.

Feelgood hell!! It makes me feel bad.
Leave the clocks alone!
Although Ben Franklin actually came up with the concept, Daylight Savings Time was implemented during World War I to save coal for troopships and warships bound for Europe.
DST shortens the distance to Europe?
The extra hour of sunlight is a big factor in Global Warming.
Save the planet!!! Do away with DST before it’s too late!
Only on weekdays
Daylight savings time was NOT shown to be the culprit, SWITCHING back and forth is.
Arizona doesn’t use Daylight Savings Time. It’s great! No changing clocks!
I don’t mind DST at all, but the new law on it sucks. The old dates seemed to work a lot better than the new ones. Wist the new regs, it is too dark in the morning for several weeks, which gets you to the old rule dates.
No, the notion is that if power plants burned less coal more would be available for military uses.
Of course, like most bad ideas, DST actually got its start in Germany. During the first war. To save power.
I wish they would do away with it, that extra hour burns up my grass in the summertime.
Mine too.
think about this in the South - keeping the sun up an extra hour each night has to raise the amount of AC energy used in places like Texas and AZ. When the sun goes down so does the start of lower evening temps. Longer nights = lower utilty bills.
The ONLY reason to do this at all is so the kids aren’t waiting for the bus in the dark. Changeing the dates negates that benefit, so WHY?
Just keep your blinds closed.
Not changing the clocks saves several minutes per year.
WQhen I think of Daylight Saving Time, I alway have the same question:
When are they gonna spend it?
(And where exactly are they storing it?)
How will my blinds save the ice caps?
We’re all gonna die!!!
IMHO, the whole idea is another gubmint scam used mainly to contro, brainwash, bs, call it what ya will!
It’s all going very nicely according to plan—just watch how many sidw w/BigBroMoFo on this!
I happen to like daylight savings time.
