Will the "Willie Effect" Impact the Election?

Some speculate the controversy could cost McCain the White House

By 700WLW News

Thursday, February 28, 2008

( Cincinnati ) -- Some reports claim the on-going controversy involving 700 WLW talk show host Bill Cunningham (Willie Cunningham) and presidential candidate John McCain has the potential to impact the results of the 2008 election.

Ohio is a key state in the presidential election. For Republicans it is essential that they win as much support as possible in southwest Ohio to counter the strong Democratic party support in the Cleveland area.

Political Science professor Jason Johnson from Hiram College spoke to the Cincinnati Enquirer and told them John McCain needs radio talk show listeners and Willie fans to go his way, "John McCain needs those people if he has any hope of winning in November."

With other national talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity rushing to Willie's defense, it widens the rift between the party's conservative base and John McCain even further, at a time when the Republican party has only recently started to solidify around the likely nominee.

Look at the source. Hardly unbiased.

McCain did the right thing, disavowing that kind of rhetoric.

Read through the thread.

Of course, the blame is McCain’s, but the point of the article is that it could cost McCain SW Ohio which is the key to republican victory in Ohio.

The source is a radio station reporting on a professor at a local college.

It would’ve been better to have said in a light tone, “Well, Bill and I disagree on using the Hussein middle name, but we’re both conservatives and on the same team. I realize he was warming up a crowd for a political event.”

well said. Distressing when a freeper knows how to handle this better than a presidential candidate.

1988- Bush went after Dukakis hammer and tong - WON.

1992 - Bush laid back and didnt respond to CLintons phony campaign - LOST.

Which path will McCain take?

Unless I misread the source header, the source is Cunningham’s radio station. Of course they defend their own.

“Conservatives unfortunately were never able to unite behind a candidate, so a moderate was able to win by appearing to be all things to all people. If we don’t unite behind McCain, albeit with serious reservations, Obama will beat McCain with that same abiility in the general election.”

Correct.
Although I spouted off against McCain for his mistake here, for the sake of the country we need to stop Obama. We need to elect McCain.

No, I blamed Bill C. in my post, not McCain.

So you agree with Sidoti that using a man’s full name is racist?
What PC universe do you have to reside in to buy that cr*p?

Show me the quote that indicates Cunningham is “racist”?

This is a media taking off criticism *of any kind* of Barack Obama as “racist”.

Uh the Bush/Kerry was a 3 million vote split...

National vote count is not relevant.

And, in the process of throwing Cunningham overboard, McCain compounded his error by saying that Obama is “an honorable American,” has integrity and is honest. That stupidity gives the media an opening to call McCain a flipflopper even when he tries to attack Obama on legitimate issues. (”You say Senator Obama is being disingenuous about the war in Iraq, Senator McCain? But didn’t you say he was honest and had integrity? How do you reconcile those two statements, Senator?”) McCain is systematically disarming himself before the battle is even begun.

Great post.

In short, McCain just threw away Southern Ohio. If he loses SW Ohio, then he loses Ohio. If he loses Ohio, then he loses America.

I disagree that McCain has lost Ohio by this incident. If Cunningham wanted to call Obama a 'hack' on his radio show, that was his business. This was McCain's rally, and Cunningham didn't need to trash talk Obama.

I went to a Pres. Bush rally in 2004 with Bush and McCain, and neither one trashed Kerry. All the speakers talked about the merits of Pres. Bush. It was fun, exciting, and made Bush look like a great and humble man on TV news that night.

That’s true. I think that Huckabee is a politician though and won’t spit into the wind on the illegals issue, he signed the “no amnesty” pledge for example. McCain on the other hand seems to often enjoy spitting at conservatives even if flecks of spittle blow right back on him.

The article, Jude, is about the risk of losing Ohio that McCain now faces, since SW Ohio is the key to a republican victory and it is Bill Cunningham’s base area. He is very popular around here.

Perhaps you can point out to me what Cunningham’s sins were?

Yep that is spot on McCain-the Tin Man of politics:
This is another case of McCain’s repeated pattern of sucking up to his enemies while dissing his friends, and it will be his undoing.
