Folks, this is a non-starter: McCain was born to American citizens, thereby making him a citizen. He could have been born on the space station — it does not matter, as long as his parents were American citizens.

The Constitution, anyone?

I assume the article is written by NYT people who consider the Constitution to be a "living document, to be interpreted in the world of today". They will probably think it's in there even when the rest of us know better.

Actually, it doesn’t quite work like that.

Until 18, you have dual citizenship. At 18, you choose.

My brother was born in Venezuela to American parents. He could have been either a Venezuelan citizen or an American citizen. Just by voting in an American election made him a citizen.

Guess they think the Constitution doesn't matter so much anymore on other issues, so why on this one.

My history teacher explained it differently. According to him, the requirement is that the president be born in this country. Even if his parents are citizens, if he is born in another country, he cannot be president. This is a legitimate question. I do not understand why many here get upset over it. It is not the first time this has come up.

Yep, he is a citizen, just like my daughter who was born in the US Army 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt Germany when I was assigned to the 3rd Armored division in the 1980, and hundreds of other military brats born there whose fathers/mothers were GIs

Well, we can always hope.

Exactly! It’s not like his parents were from, let’s say, Mexico, and here in the United States ILLEGALLY, and he was born on American soil to those un-American parents and became an American citizen anchor baby!! Sheesh. NYT/NYSlimes is sinking to new depths. Think there’s oil down there somewhere that can help with our energy crises?! Oh, wait. That’s Satan sitting on his throne laughing his butt off-my bad!
