Ark. Catholics asked to stop donations to (Susan G.) Komen foundation

A breast cancer foundation known for its fundraising races across the globe faces increased scrutiny from Roman Catholic church dioceses for its support of Planned Parenthood.

The church's Little Rock diocese has urged its members not to donate to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, which has invested about $1 billion in cancer outreach and research. The reason, church leaders say, comes from the Dallas-based foundation giving money to Planned Parenthood to hold breast exams and offer education to women in its clinics.

"Donors cannot control how an organization designates its funds," the diocese statement reads. "Therefore, money donated for a specific service ... directly frees up funds to support other areas of an organization's agenda."

Marianne Linane, director of the diocese's "respect life" office, said those other agendas include abortions and contraceptive services. The Catholic church's policy is that abortion is wrong in every instance.

Linane said the Little Rock diocese, which oversees all churches in Arkansas, used the same statement sent out by the church's St. Louis diocese last year. However, the end of the Little Rock letter included addresses of Arkansas hospitals parishioners could donate to that would eliminate "the administrative funds for a middle broker."

Monsignor J. Gaston Hebert sent the statement to parishes and Catholic schools this month and planned to send out a follow-up letter, Linane said. Hebert did not return a call for comment Tuesday.

The Little Rock diocese's decision comes as northwest Arkansas prepares for its running of the Race for the Cure on April 19. Officials estimated Little Rock's running last year brought out more than 43,000 participants and raised more than $1.65 million.

Little Rock follows other dioceses in raising concerns with the foundation.

In 2005, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston abandoned its support of the foundation.

How does killing babies benefit breast cancer research??

By raising the breast-cancer rate. Where would a breast-cancer foundation be without breast cancer?

OK, I read the link. The most significant clear statement in there is that the founder of Komen has a relationship with Planned Parenthood, and I would assume she is therefore sympathetic to PP.

However, I read it carefully and the rest was avoiding meeting issues head on. Komen has given some money to PP. The article implies but does not state the money was used for things other than breast cancer awareness. Statements like (paraphrasing) "Komen gave PP $447,000 in a city." Next sentence: "PP built a $15 million facility."

Also recites that abortion is linked to breast cancer and that Komen denies that link. But it does not clearly state that Komen gives PP any $$ that go toward anything other than breat exams and info about breast cancer.

Just to explain, I am not thrilled by breast cancer charities because I'd like to see the money go toward medical cures not just awareness and feel good endeavors. I'm just not certain that Komen is giving money to fund abortions, which is the implication here.

ANY money given to Planned Parenthood
furthers their agenda.

Certainly a valid point you are making. However, I personally would not defund Komen because it gives PP money that is used for breast exams. OTOH, I would rather give my money to research facilities that have a chance at finding a cure.

It doesn’t matter. Because once you give them money, they can than shift money they were originally going to use on that expenditure to fund other things.

For example, let’s say X earns $2500 a month, he spend $1500 a month on food + rent+utilities, and the other $1000 he spends on his drug addiction. If I come along and says, I’ll pay for his food and rent, and will write X a check for $1500 a month.

I can fool myself into thinking I’m paying for his necessities, and he may really use the actual money I gave him to pay for them. But he still spends $1500 a month on his necessities, but now he’s spend $2500 a month on drugs. So my money really went to pay for his drugs.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea they contributed to PP. Which raises another question - why is a nonprofit contributing to another nonprofit?

That link shows it as a “highly rated” charity -

But I still have a huge problem with them giving ANYTHING to Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood vehmently denies that Komen Foundation money is used to pay for abortions........but they refuse to open their books for scrutiny. (”Women’s privacy issues, blah, blah, save it.....”)

Any money given to Planned Parenthood for any reason through any venue SUBSIDIZES ABORTIONS. Planned Parenthood relies on “federal grants” and stealth fundraising because they know their main gravy train(abortions) is becoming more and more unacceptable.

well over 80% of what they raise is spent on the programs they sponsor

Does anyone have statistics on their advertising budget? In January, our supermarket shelves were stocked with Susan G. Komen advertisements on everything from Campbell's Soup to Betty Crocker and even local bakery manufacturers. That costs $$$ to have packaging redesigned for a limited time. It took me by surprise and left me wondering why those monies were not spent on the victims they purport to support.

Very logical Williams...and I agree. As to the Komen Foundation giving monies to PP, I do believe in some parts of the country the only mammogram (or travelling mammography vans) are funded by variety of sources (United Way being one as well). So a travelling mammography van and staff could fall under the same umbrella organization as a PP clinic...run by some not-for-profit corp. So cutting the Komen funding is really biting the nose to spite the face. From what I have read, the lions share of monies Komen redistributes back to the communities (think the of the Race for the Cure) goes toward ‘prevention’ ie., mammograms. It would be a travesty to cut back on those funds...

I think the manufacturers of the products handle the publicity and the re-packing/labeling of the products. I am not an accountant, but I would guess that like other business costs those could be written off (along with the donation they make to Komen, or the American Heart Association—Go Red!).

But once the money is given, how do you know what gets done once it’s in PP’s checking account?
