Just breaking on NRO...
Those were the first 2 magazines I subscribed to as well! I’m not renewing my NR subscription so I hope I get the issue about WFB before it elapses. What a sad day this is. RIP Mr. Buckley.
Thanks for the post, dog. What a sad day.
I became a Buckley fan back in the early to mid 60’s. It was always such a pleasure to watch him speak and to read his written word. He really did revolutionize politics in the USA.
May his soul rest in peace, and his family find comfort in the extraordinary legacy he’s left behind.
RIP Mr. Buckley, thanks for trying to make sane, an insane world.
He and those he influenced not only made it stop, they turned it around. It's impossible to overstate the influence of this man.
Plus he wrote some great books:
Memories, indeed. Back in the early 80s I drove to Shreveport from East Texas to hear him speak. He was my hero. He was, truly, a national treasure.
I'm hope you and Ronald Reagan have a lot of catching up to do.
Miles gone by
RIP
My dad died of COPD and it wasn’t pretty. He couldn’t live at home and we put him and mom in assisted living. He was on oxygen 24/7 and was also working (still!) when his body finally had had enough. The nurse put him in new pajamas, laid him in bed and within 24 hours he was gone. He knew what was happening the whole time - that’s what hurts me the most. Unfortunately, I was living in Los Angeles at the time and arrived after he had died, though, he was aware I was on my way.
RIP
WFB
Sad news. He will be missed.
God bless and keep William F Buckley Jr. He nobly heralded the American conservative movement and thereby edified our country and thereby all of Western civilization. His work and influence endure and are a credit to all that is good in the world.
Happy trails, Bill...you did good...
loved this passage in the Washington Post:
Buckley feuded bitterly with the writer Gore Vidal, and in a live appearance on ABC television at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Vidal called Buckley a crypto-Nazi.
Buckley answered: Now listen, you queer, stop calling me a crypto-Nazi or Ill sock you in the goddamn face.
Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to
other views, but then are shocked and offended
to discover that there are other views.
WFB, Jr.
Had the opportunity to field a question: "T. S. Eliot said a country does not recover from a civil war. Do you think there is a direct connection between the Civil War and abortion? He said, most people do not remember the civil war. I don't remember what else he said, but that month NR ran an article on the very subject, sometime back in the '80s.
Read Buckley's Atlantic High: first point of order is to determine who are the chiefs and who are the indians.
Loved Firing Line..
God rest his soul.
God bless WFB. He is without peer in academia. He effortlessly devoured leftists with good humor, keen intellect and plain old common sense. It doesn’t take much strategy to defeat a liberal; simply stick to the high road, keep the argument fact based, think outside of the Marxist box and refrain from being mean spirited. Mr. Buckley dumbfounded even the most indoctrinated (liberal educated) leftists with his superior, seemingly supernatural ability to send leftists to debate hell but at the same time having them looking forward to the journey there. He is the conservative standard bearer and his impact will resound in conservative victory after victory for ages to come. The planet just got considerably dumber. A temporary victory for liberalism, nee perversion.
