Prayers for his friends and family...
I met Mr. Buckley when I was a teenager and he was nasty to me. I never forgot that. Although I adhere to his principles and love the stuff he wrote, that event just stood with me. I am sorry for his passing, he was an important voice.
Very sad day, indeed, for us conservatives. I’d like to publically thank Rush Limbaugh for having “turned me on” to this man & his timeless conservatives principles. My heart felt sad for Rush yesterday @ noon, as he struggled for the words to say. (he only just heard the news) Rush sounded like a proud son speaking about his very important, influencial, intellectual & gracious father.
I am sorry that I never really took the time to delve any further into this mn, than from what Rush has said & a few briefs blips on TV. (I didn’t have quite the vocabuary needed to follow along in a meaningful way) But now, I do intend to start reading his books & studying about this man’s legacy as it unfolds in the words of som many wise consevatives he mentored.
IF you didn’t catch Charlie Rose’s ribute last night, I suggest you try to find it on the Net or get a copy. It was quite moving, especially his brief euology at the end, with him shedding a tear or three.

We had semi-conservative and conservative LITE presidentional frontrunners and Democrat majorities before, but it is the first time now that conservatism itself has been redefined along the big government, perpetual war lines. Sure there are talented journalists and always will be, but there is little doubt in my mind that conservatism itself is in crisis.
To honor the life of the last of the Old Lions of the conservative movement, William F. Buckley, I’d like to contribute a video homage to him from a MICHIGAN friend of Buckley‘s, Clark Durant.

Clark made these comments two months before the night William F. Buckley died. He shared them with the participants of the New Centurion Program presented by the Conservative Institute in consultation with the Russell Kirk Center for Cultural Renewal.

I have selected this video because it wonderfully encapsulates the great role Buckley played in the conservative movement. It’s also what everyone ought to know about WFB as taught by an incredibly accomplished professor of history and presidential studies.
A Buckley’s friend and disciple, Professor Gleaves Whitney, a writer, lecturer, and historian, was named the first permanent Senior Fellow of the Russell Kirk Center for Cultural Renewal and the Director of the Hauenstein Center for Presidential State at GVSU. Professor Whitney has delivered his presentation The Decline and Renewal of American Conservatism to New Centurions in Lansing, Grand Rapids and on the night this world lost Bill, his friend Gleaves would be sharing his magnificent lecture with the New Centurions in Detroit.

A friend of mine was fortunate enough to grow up living next door to Mr. Buckley. He was close friends with his son, Christopher, and spent many happy times with the family in their home and on their boat. He went with them on many sailing trips and was mentioned in one of Mr. Buckley’s books. I’ve enjoyed many evenings with my friend listening to his wonderful stories of the man and the great times he had with him, some of them quite hilarious. Mr. Buckley was an American treasure and will be missed by many.

Buckley had emphysema. Perhaps that’s what killed
him or God just said it was time to come home.
I don’t agree that the passing of WFB represents
the end of conservatism. Soon a whole army of
conservatives will be returning to the United States.
I’m sure they won’t like what they see and will
commence to cleaning house.

What is wrong with people like you? So there is more than one thread. Is it going to kill you? Do you lose brain cells? There are hundreds of threads in all kinds of topic centers here. Do they bother you also?
Geez, it’s no wonder the true conservatism Buckley lived to nurture is dying - we have thread counters whining.

Don’t make the assumption that being in the military makes someone a conservative. There’s all sorts serving. One of my father’s office partners and a good friend was as liberal as you could be without falling off the map. He was also a Lt Col and one of the Army’s small arms experts.
I used to watch Firing Line when I was in high school. I think that show was Buckley at his best.

You’re right. What passes for ‘conservatism’ now is indistinguishable from the Great Society liberalism of LBJ and Hubert Humphrey. Talk about a dumbed-down age. The best thing for conservatism would be for it to return to the obscurity it once enjoyed, and then maybe the herd of liberal opportunists plaguing it might return to their homes.
