...If senior Democrats were really serious about a get-tough approach toward illegal immigration, we would be urging the Republican minority to reach across the aisle and work to come up with a genuine bipartisan solution. But unfortunately, the Democrats are putting together an elaborate con job...The goal of these Democrats and possibly the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as well is to defeat a bipartisan bill that takes a no-amnesty, enforcement-oriented approach to illegal immigration.
Specifically, they are worried that a growing number of moderate and conservative Republicans and Democrats are cosponsoring the SAVE Act, H.R. 4088, introduced by Rep. Heath Shuler....
The SAVE Act...would strengthen border security and require that employers verify that their workers are legally present in the United States...the bill...is bottled up in the House Judiciary Committee...
Republican supporters of H.R. 4088 are circulating a discharge petition to bring the bill to the House floor...Senior Democrats...have come up with a Plan B muddling the issue by attaching a killer amendment...proposed by Rep. Joe Baca, chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
The Baca Amendment would give illegal aliens who pass a background check a "five-year temporary worker permit" that expires on Dec. 31, 2012. It would also provide employers who hired illegal aliens "safe harbor" (apparently some measure of immunity from prosecution) for past hiring of illegal aliens. If Shuler gets enough signatures to force his bill to the floor, Democrats hope to neuter it by attaching the Baca Amendment. If Baca's proposal were to become law, open-borders advocates could come back later and pass legislation putting these illegals on a path to citizenship. While not endorsing the Baca Amendment, a senior official with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said he believed there was "some kind of deal in the works."...

Is this the beginning of a McCain/Pelosi bill?
All they’re going to do is sit around and talk and talk and talk until it’s to late to do anything..........the problem is ........they know it.
Bad move by the Dems. They are going to lose the House and Senate if they keep this up.
Sure smells like it.
Do NOT underestimate the drive behind this amnesty gambit.
These driving forces are almost unstoppable. All Democrats, almost the entire leadership cadre of the Republican Party, this President and the next President, the entire MSM, the Chamber of Commerce, CEOs of nearly EVERY large corporation, lobby groups from every trades and services business, the unions, - they are all for amnesty and open borders, and they are determined to get them. Damn the stupid American people who are interfering with their quest for power and profit.
It required an overwhelming wave of opposition and condemnation by the American public (70-80%) to turn it aside last summer, but they are counting on America's historical chronic fatigue syndrome to await an increasing lack of interest to eventually sneak it by them.
Sadly, a McCain presidency will guarantee amnesty as the author of the legislation himself "reaches across the aisle" to work with Reid and Pelosi to jam amnesty down the stupid Americans' throats. And the spineless Republicans in Congress will "have to support our President McCain".
At least with an Obama presidency, guaranteed to be a failure soon after its initiation, Republicans in Congress might be able to raise the courage to oppose it. Not good options, but it's a McCain certainty vs. an Obama possibility.
300,000,000 people and we're down to these 3. Geesh!
300,000,000 people and we’re down to these 3. Geesh!
Bumper sticker material for sure.
Absolutely correct.
That is the key right there. It is amnesty. Immigration law clearly states that if an alien is in the country legally for >>> five years <<< they are eligible to apply for citizenship. There is no qualification as to how they do it so long as they are here legally.
This is why you always see these "temporary" work permits that are set to at least five years. It is a ticket to amnesty.
The reason Shuler's bill is going nowhere is his first vote cast. He voted for Nancy Pelosi for Speaker, and she's not about to let his bill get out of committee, much less get a floor vote.
Shuler is just pretending to be a conservative, in order to trick the folks around here into letting him stay in Congress. I believe I can prevent that outcome.
Congressman Billybob
They should wait til after the election. In an election year, people are paying attention.
How’s this, to fit on the sticker:
“300,000,000, AND
WE GET THESE 3 ?!”
And change the 3 to 2 after Hillary falls on her sword.
I fear you are right. The only consolation I have is that, last summer, Bush, McCain, the Democrats, the GOP leadership, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, etc, all together, couldn’t get it done, and a lot more people are riled up about it at this point. You point about fatigue is well taken, but I think some of the people who weren’t involved last summer have now become irate. Oh, and Obama has said, in essence, he will not control our borders. I am waiting for someone to ask all of them how many more we are supposed to absorb.
