CLINTON STAFFERS CIRCULATE 'DRESSED' OBAMA Mon Feb 25 2008 06:51:00 ET

With a week to go until the Texas and Ohio primaries, stressed Clinton staffers circulated a photo over the weekend of a "dressed" Barack Obama.

The photo, taken in 2006, shows the Democrat frontrunner fitted as a Somali Elder, during his visit to Wajir, a rural area in northeastern Kenya.

The senator was on a five-country tour of Africa.

"Wouldn't we be seeing this on the cover of every magazine if it were HRC?" questioned one campaign staffer, in an email obtained by the DRUDGE REPORT.

In December, the campaign asked one of its volunteer county coordinators in Iowa to step down after the person forwarded an e-mail falsely stating that Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe quickly accused the Clinton campaign Monday of 'shameful offensive fear-mongering' for circulating the snap.

Clinton campaign manager Maggie Williams responds: "If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed."

I don’t know if his mother’s parents are alive or dead, haven’t heard anything about them. I know that his half-sister campaigned for him in Hawaii, but no mention was made of the grandparents. Anyone have data on this?

". . . but he has trouble wearing an American flag pin."

That kinda puts it in perspective for me. On its face, dressing in local garb is pretty common for pols. But couple it with Obamalama's (and his wife's) steadfast refusal to acknowledge any love of his own country makes me wonder.

No, I don’t think so. It is a slick way to remind people that Obama may have loyalties to places and cultures other than American.

at this point, if she pulls off the nomination, the sit-out rate among obama supporters is going to be high I would think

This is great.Hillary is going to smear her way to the nomination. African-American voters, Obama supporters will stay home or vote for McCain after all this. McCain is a democrat for all intent and purposes so I think he’ll get a huge chunk of the democrat vote if she’s the nominee. So the senate will probably have 47 or 48 gop senators. Not that its the most conservative group. But it will give the base a couple of years of a relative calm to get the movement back in full swing.

Apparently his maternal grandfather is dead, but his grandmother is still alive:

“Soetoro-Ng, who teaches history at the private LaPietra Hawaii School for Girls and night classes at the University of Hawaii, said her brother is a private man who deals with questions about his identity and other struggles in ‘’a very personal way.’’

‘’He’s good though about grappling with them and moving on,’’ she said in a recent phone interview. ‘’Today he is a man very comfortable with himself and peaceful with his sense of self.’’

Obama honed his ability to appeal to a diverse group of people in the Hawaiian islands, a crossroad of cultures from throughout the Pacific, said Soetoro-Ng.

‘’Hawaii is the place that gave him the ability to ... understand people from a wide array of backgrounds,’’ she said. ‘’People see themselves in him ... because he himself contains multitudes.’’

His family’s own diversity played no small part in developing that skill, she said.

Obama still returns almost every Christmas to visit family, indulge in local sushi, body surf at a beach on the southeastern coast of Oahu and look for sea turtles, Soetoro-Ng said. His parents and grandfather have died, and his grandmother is in poor health but has been following the presidential race closely on television, she said.”
