Chatter bounces off the bare walls and checkered linoleum floor as Josh Pedaline and other Barack Obama supporters burn through their call sheets.
A map of Delaware County splays across a tabletop. Another is laden with cookies, pretzels and other snacks. Volunteers seated elbow-to-elbow peck at cell phones and pitch the Democratic Illinois senator in advance of Ohio's March 4 primary.
The scene is a typical campaign boiler room, except that four of the 13 dialing away are lifelong Republicans, including Pedaline, who reveres former President Reagan and twice voted for President Bush.
"I am so sick and tired of the partisanship," Pedaline says before the start of his shift at the Obama outpost in this affluent suburb north of Columbus. "I don't want to be cheesy and say, 'He'll bring us all together.' But he seems like someone willing to listen to a good idea, even if it comes from a Republican."
Pedaline and other GOP renegades are part of a striking phenomenon this campaign season: They are "Obamacans," as the senator calls them, and they are surfacing in surprising numbers, blurring the red-blue lines that color the nation's politics.
"I'm a conservative, but I have gay friends," Pedaline, 28, says over dinner at a Columbus diner. "I have friends who don't believe in abortion, but I don't condemn them for it. I don't feel like Obama is condemning me for being a Republican."

That’s true, you never hear stories about diehard rats climbing aboard the SS Republican. But Republicans jumping ship, that’s a given. Pure BS.
“Pedaline, who reveres former President Reagan”
He is 28. He doesn’t even remember Reagan. For every one faux Republican like this, there will be 20 moderate to conservative Democrats who will desert Barry O.
This is the theme already echoing.
“I am so sick and tired of the partisanship”
The old Soviet Union would be perfect for dimbulbs like this. There was no partisanship there either, only one party, the Communist variety. Anyone who evinced the slightest inclination toward partisanship (i.e.- freedom, pluralism) earned himself a one way ticket to the Gulag.
Youngstown is a dem stronghold
What an utter and complete load of crap.
Is there anyone actually naive enough to believe this?
“who reveres former President Reagan and twice voted for President Bush.”
It makes no sense. Reagan and Obama are polar opposites. It’s like rooting for Superman one day - then Lex Luther the next.
Never.
Bump for later reading.
>>BTW, what is a conservative Democrat? What in the world would make them feel welcome in that party?<<
Think Lieberman and what the Dems did to him...
Today a conservative Democrat is some one who believes in banning gay marraiage, but allowing civil unions (which is still the same thing). They are merely socialists (who love to demogogue “big business”) as opposed to liberal Democrats, who want to nationalize virtually every major sector of the economy. Finally, “conservative” Democrats are moderates in ignoring the Constitution, which is to say they only ignore about half of it. The more liberal majority of their party wishes that the Constitution never existed as it is a constant reminder of what they cannot legally do to this country.

I have friends who believe it’s ok to drink and drive, but I don’t condemn them for it.
I have friends who believe it’s ok to beat their wives, but I don’t condemn them for it.
I have friends who don’t believe they should have to pay for their groceries, but I don’t condemn them for it.
Sounds kind of idiotic when you apply the same argument to other crimes, doesn’t it?
Yes, there’s no partisanship in Cuba, either. If he’s sick and tired of partisanship, he could go live there.
So essentially this guy was always a liberal democrat. And the big LATimes scoop is that he's supporting a liberal democrat. He just claims he voted for Bush, but never actually gives his solid "conservative" beliefs that he no longer holds. Or why they've changed. I've never met a single creature who has done this, go from conservative to liberal.
What they are is liars. They pulled this crap in 2000, 2002 and 2004. Moveon.org and other Leftist orgnaizations train their activists to say this crap. They think it makes them sound more credible to “moderate” voters if they claim to be Republican cross overs voting Democrat
“BTW, what is a conservative Democrat? What in the world would make them feel welcome in that party?”
A lot of people register as Democrats because their parents were. They just never change although they vote Republican. You see this phenomenon in the South especially but also places like Pennsylvania where many of the “Casey” Dems are conservative only on cultural issues, like abortion and guns. If the GOP nominee does not draw a contrast on these issues, then they return to the fold.
Fortunately, these voters are ripe for the picking against the proabortion, anti-gun Obama. There is a stark contrast between McCain and Obama, the sharpest contrast between candidates of the two parties on these 2 issues in my memory.
