I’m in the second group and voted for Fred in my state primary. I will vote for McCain to try to keep the Dems out of the WH, but in all fairness, I do have a lot of empathy with those in the 3rd group. I do understand how they feel and why they are doing what they are doing. Holding to principle is admirable. I am more of a Reaganite, I guess, in that I’ll take what I can get and continue to work hard for the rest, while fighting the worst of the left.

It’s ok. There are many prodigal sons on FRee Republic. When they return home in August or October the fatted calf will be killed and there will be rejoicing.

Their absence will not be brought up as the joy of their return is celebraated. The family knows they have their reasons for the absence and thats all that need be brought up.

The savor of victory in the offing will replace the bitter taste of primary defeat in the spring.

Which way would you rather die, a bullet to the head or an arrow in the stomach? Either way, your gonna die. Take your pick.

If you elect McCain as President, he will define conservatism. I am not willing to allow conservatism to mean: pro-amnesty, pro-human-caused Global Warming, anti-first amendment, pro-terrorists-have-civil-rights or any of the other left-wing quackery John McCain has embraced over the years.

I also don’t see why I should be expected to be more loyal to the republican party than the candidate we nominated for President.

Logic has nothing to do with it, it is purely personal and psychological. They told themselves at some point that they were the cat's pajamas because they were more to the right than McCain - many as early as the 2000 primaries - and to support him now in any way would be to admit some of their vitriol back then was uncalled for.

They will no more admit this than a cold war red will admit Hiss was a soviet agent. The reason is the same - personal statements of their own are on the line. The farther out they went in slandering McCain, the less capable they are of swallowing any of it and voting for him anyway.

It is a fool's errand trying to convince any of them. Just point out that no one need follow them and they are free to take themselves off in a huff and be as silly as they like. Simple. Also, it is so last week by now, nobody cares what they think.

For the conservatives out there who are not going to vote for McCain, you do realize that if McCain loses in November that the Republican establishment and the MSM are going to blame conservatives for the loss. I hope the establishment is not viewing conservatives the way the Dems view blacks in that they’ll vote for us no matter what because there is no way they’ll vote for the other party.

I’m not voting for McCain because I said I wouldn’t, and I always keep my word. AFAIC Obama has the job already won, so it doesn’t matter whether I vote or not. I will vote for the “conservative” candidates on the local/state level, and leave the presidency up to the good Lord. I think He may have plans for giving America her justice.

What I don’t understand is why some here are making such concerted efforts to dissuade others from voting for or supporting him.
_______________________________________________________
I don’t know Bob, why are others making such concerted efforts to support him, to include insults??? I post on a Conservative web site, not a GOP web site. IMO many of the changes we see today in our society come from individuals abandoning their values and core beliefs in small measured steps. I cannot understand someone like McCain defining himself as a conservative when he is clearly a moderate. Conservatives do not vote against tax cuts, support stem cell research while claiming to be pro-life. When I was drafted, I swore to defend the constitution of the United States. Writing a bill like McCain/Feingold which clearly limits free speech is not a core principle I will support. I could run on and on with other examples that clearly define McCain as a moderate (McCain/Kennedy, McCain/Leiberman) but you understand this don’t you? I believe you question why someone would dare mention McCain in such a light. Perhaps its because of the difference between the words Conservative, and Republican.
Republican is a political party, and Conservative defines a set of values and beliefs that I/we define as our core values. For too long its been assumed that being Republican means we are Conservative, or a member of the ‘vast right wing blah blah blah’ It is far too simplistic to say that those who do not support John McCain are just angry, bitter people who didn’t get their way. While some individuals here act just that way, I assume more are just tired of watching the GOP move to the left and trying to drag Conservatives with it.

I understand, especially after Tuesday’s debate, just how awful the opposition is. Looking at the number of votes cast in each primary its clear that the democratic base is on fire for Obama. The larger problem is that the republicans are not united. Some suggest that a Obama win in November will unite the republicans against a common foe. Well unity would be a welcome sight after the last 7 years of Bush hating, free spending by a republican congress. See this is about the kind of country my granddaughter will be left with. God help us.

With respect,
