A Question for FR McCain Detractors
FR | 2-23-08 | Bob J

Posted on 02/23/2008 10:56:29 AM PST by Bob J

Ever since Super Tuesday a super debate has been raging on FR concerning John McCain. I was never a McCain supporter, in fact I penned the post Super Tuesday post "Official FR Drinking Thread" so we could together drown our common disappointments into oblivion.

FReepers seem to be moving into three distinct groups. The first are those that have always supported McCain, a lot or partially. There are those that don't like McCain but are willing to support him because they believe they will get some of what they want or to defeat what the see as the more critical danger, Obama or Clinton. The there's the third group, those that viscerally dislike McCain and vow never to vote for him for any reason.

The actions and motivation for support from the first two groups seem obvious...they would rather see McCain in the White House than a dem. But for the life of me I cannot understand some of the actions of the third.

Allow me to explain.

I understand you dislike McCain and the reasons why. He is far too liberal on many issues, he has stabbed conservatives in the back several times and he is too cozy with the dems. These are all defensible reasons to not vote for him or to vote third party and you have every right to vote as you see fit and for whatever reasons you hold. What I don't understand is why some here are making such concerted efforts to dissuade others from voting for or supporting him.

As flawed as McCain is there is no way a logical case can be made that we would be better off under Obama or Hillary (O&H). Even on most issues where McCain is closer to the left than to us, O&H are much farther to the left than he is and would do much more damage than McCain. On the issues where he is not, the WOT, taxes, abortion, etc., the differences are stark and this does not even take into count extended issues like judicial appointments.

So why are you working so hard, so viscerlly, so nasty, to turn votes against McCain? If you truly feel as you do than go sit out November or cast your vote for your 3rd party candidate. That makes sense. What doesn't make sense is why you push for a McCain and GOP loss.

It may be as simple as "misery loves company". It may be that you validate your own position by getting others to believe as you do. It may be that there are some dem propaganda plants on FR. I don't know but I sure would like to and I know others do as well.

YOU are a liberal, Bob. There is no reason for me to vote for mcCain. If you want to, do it. As for me and many others, they are tired of holding their noses to vote for the GOP. No more browbeating, flag waving, war mongering, fear tactics are going to work with me.

One of the reasons I liked Reagan so much was that he was not a war monger. He only put troops where they were really needed. He then used his brain.

Sorry Bob, if you like McCain, vote for him. I won’t.

Over 300 posts in 2 hours. You know how to stir people up, Bob.

The way that I see it is that is isn’t that we in Group Three are trying to shoot McCain down (no pun intended) as much as we are defending our decision to vote for our principles.

You have made the case for voting for him and you (from what I’ve seen) done it without denigrating those who disagree with your view. I respect that even though I am solidly in Group 3.

I think that you see us as vociferous because we are responding to nasty attacks telling us that we are leftists who want a dem to win. Or worse. I/we just don’t see that much of a difference between the candidates or much or a difference in the outcome, regardless of who wins in November. Maybe I am missing it, but I have only seen intolerance for McCain, not his supporters. But many of his supporters here have made this personal against us.

I am in the second group too. It is as if I took the family out to buy a new car. I had hoped to find a car that everyone in the family wanted. However, as hard as I looked, there was only this old Yugo GV. I know. I know. It is one of the worst cars ever built. However, this all I could get and, and, I can say this: At least it gets me any my family there.

Hey you snivelers out there! If you don’t like it, you can get out and walk!

Indeed. And destroyed Republicans in the process.

Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it. Perhaps that's what they had in mind.

Thank you. I appreciate it.

I would rather fall in line with folks like you behind the banner of conservatism, than fall in line behind the banner of any man who would do this nation harm, no matter his party affiliation.

If a cause cannot loft a man worthy of leadership, then I can not support that cause. The cause of Republicanism is dead to me, when men like McCain are it’s standard bearer.

The lesser of two evils is still evil. I will not compromise my principles by voting "evil."

Keep up the good work and the good fight.

You did not ask for a reason to support Obama, you asked for a reason to oppose McCain. I agree he is better than Obama but he is not my choice. I will hold my nose and vote for him in November. But I just voted for Huckabee in the Texas primary. There were more democrats voting than Republicans in CD 22. You would have to be there to notice the obvious differences.

"Ford was a RINO and the next GOP president after him was Reagan."

Yes, Ford was a RINO, but he couldn't get elected anymore than RINO McCain will be able to. Reagan followed the loser Peanut Man, not Ford.

The infiltration is almost complete. They have gotten close enough to taste it and are now blowing gaskets because many have caught on.

I will blame those who didn't vote for him, whether of the right or of the left. Presented a clear choice between hawk and dove, capitalism and socialism, if the people freely choose the second on each score, then they are fully to blame for the hell that will then be paid.

I'd say that's a myopic view filed with partisan hyperbole. A weak president can do more to advance liberalism than many leftists. A fool like McCain can do as much to advance socialism than a liberal who is forcefully opposed by conservatives.
