Serbia: U.S. to blame for violence
CNN.com ^ | Saturday, February 23, 2008 | Staff

Serbian prosecutors said Saturday they were hunting rioters who targeted the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade leaving one person dead while a senior Serbian minister blamed Washington for the violence triggered by Kosovo's breakaway.

Authorities said they had arrested nearly 200 rioters who took part in the violence on Thursday that prompted the United States to evacuate non-essential embassy staff and warn Serbia it would be held responsible.

"We are collecting evidence and are identifying the culprits," Slobodan Radovanovic said in a statement, according to The Associated Press.

Serbia's Kosovo minister Slobodan Samardzic said Saturday that the U.S. -- which backed Kosovo's breakaway and was among the first countries to recognize its seccession -- was the "main culprit" for the violence, AP reported.

Thursday's violence, some of the worst unrest in Serbia since the removal of strongman Slobodan Milosevic in 2000, was followed by further unrest Friday in Kosovo as Serbs attacked U.N. police in an ethnically divided city.

Some 5,000 protesters hurled bottles and stones as they tried to cross a key bridge in the northern town of Mitrovica, divided between Serbs and the ethnic Albanians who have driven last Sunday's independence declaration.

Speaking to CNN on Friday, a top U.S. diplomat said Serbia had a "fundamental responsibility" to protect U.S. diplomats and citizens, adding that Washington would hold Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and his government "personally responsible" for assaults on U.S. interests.

"What happened yesterday in Belgrade was absolutely reprehensible," Undersecretary for Political Affairs R. Nicholas Burns said. "This kind of thing should not happen in a civilized country."

Waiting to hear the apologists justify why the US is to blame here, not the protesters themselves.

Will any of the presidential candidates propose that America end its entaglement in NATO and inform the ignorant savages in Europe (you know, the ones whose respect for America has diminished under President Bush) that when hostilities in the Balkans boil over we will remain neutral?

I’ve got my hands immersed in boiling water waiting for this to happen.

I have no special love for any side in the Balkan conflict. It’s not our business. We should get out and let the Euros/Albanians and Russians/Serbs handle it. It is futile to try to make out sense of the Balkans.

How exactly is he a troll?

He's not a troll...
a troll would say that the Serbs, who once were our allies, were totally justified for any action taken against US interests because of our shameful treatment against them from 40,000 feet. Now they hate us.

That's what a troll would say.

: U.S. to blame for violence

It’s all Bush’s fault...No wait, 42 was president then and his commander was Wesley something, who wanted to attack the Russians at the airport. Wasn’t it a French general that said he wasn’t going to start WWW III because of Clinton and Clark.

Only if that troll neglected to mention that the Serbs brought it upon themselves by exterminating their own people.

We can argue all day whether the U.S./NATO action was necessary, but to ignore what the Serbs actually were doing is shameful.

No, it was a British general.

But General Clark's plan was blocked by General Sir Mike Jackson, K-For's British commander.

"I'm not going to start the Third World War for you," he reportedly told General Clark during one heated exchange.

From here.

Good guys are in short supply all around, when you look at actions in the Balkans.

A troll would be parroting the lies spread by Christiane Ahmanpour as gospel.

The Serbs (1) believe that their culture and nationhood are rooted in Kosovo (which 50 years ago had a Serbian majority before the Muslim influx,) and (2) their historic mission is to “keep camels from drinking out of the Rhine.” They see disaster on both fronts and are therefore upset.

Their shrines and Orthodox churches are being burned in Kosovo by the adherents of the religion of peace (trade mark pending), and as for the Rhine, forget about it. Over half the children in elementary school in Cologne, Germany are now non-German. Camels are drinking out of the Rhine.
