BERKELEY -- Two people were arrested Friday after they encircled police during a protest of the U.S. Marine recruiting center, a police spokeswoman said.
A group called The World Can't Wait -- Drive Out the Bush Regime was demonstrating at the downtown center Friday to protest military recruiting in Berkeley.
The issue has been in the limelight recently after the City Council last month called the recruiters "uninvited and unwelcome intruders."
Police spokeswoman Sgt. Mary Kusmiss said about 20 protesters marched from the Marine recruiting center at 64 Shattuck Square to Shattuck Avenue and Center Street to rally for their cause.
Two Berkeley police bike officers followed the group to protect the community, she said.
At the corner of Shattuck and Center, a protester screamed into a megaphone, a violation of a city permit because it was away from the recruiting center, where protesters have a sound permit.
Police tried to detain him to talk about the violation, Kusmiss said.
At that point, the crowd surged and surrounded the bike officers and closed in on them, she said.
Police called for backup and at least a dozen cars arrived in downtown, Kusmiss said.
Kusmiss said officers had to use some force to make the arrests and protect their colleagues during the surge. No one was seriously injured although a couple of police officers sustained minor injuries, Kusmiss said.
Police arrested Rafael Schiller, 26 of Berkeley, and another man who refused to give his name, police said.
Officials from World Can't Wait were not immediately available for comment.
Police said the arrests were for resisting arrest, but the two could also face other charges for refusing to give their names and violating the city permit.

Two Berkeley police bike officers followed the group to protect the community, she said.
How does she think that two bicycle cops will "protect the community" from a roving gang of 20 Revolutionary Communist Party hoodlums? By lobbing Koosh balls at them? Lassoing them with their feather boas and marching them in a conga-line to Berzerkistan Police HQ/Starbucks?
And why do the two bicycle police "protect the community" on Friday, but not "protect" pro-troops demonstrators and the people trying to enter and exit the US Marine Recruiting center?
The longer this farce continues in Berzerkistan, the more convinced I am that the good citizens in rest of the country should petition our federal legislators to kick that city and all of it's idiot, leftist city government "leaders" and idiot, leftist residents out of the USA.
Until they start rounding up the peace rioters and cracking some heads as needed, and generally acting like the law means something, the RCP, WWP, and other assorted Moonbats will own the city as they do now.
Berzerkistan is a quagmire.
My thoughts exactly.
It was only a crime when it happened to them, not us.
Here's an example of how Time might crop it and claim it's a pro-Marine protest, if the had their bias in the opposite direction (recall how they cropped a photo of Ann Coulter supporters and referred to them as protestors against her?)...
As much as I hate these scum, I don't wish to give the federal government any more power.

It's their city, and I'm glad there are so many concentrated there, rather than spreading out and contaminating other areas.
Maybe I'm too conservative, but I believe in local control and letting them handle their own issues, unless it crosses into violations of civil rights or other areas in which the feds must step in. I'm just very cautious of setting precedent for Obama to step into local matters.
They tried to encircle the pro-Marine protestors with chain and nothing was done?!? Got pics? How were they stopped?
At least the police were watching them. Now, if the Code Pink mob would violate the terms of their permit ...
What are these ‘hate groups’ going to do when Bush is no longer in office?
No, the protesters surrounded the two bike officers.
These people are violent. World can't Wait is a front group for the Revolutionary Party, a cult that incites violence.
Substitute Bob Avakian for David Koresh, and Communists for Christians and there you have it. Both are end of the world cults. Both believe that society would descend into murder and mayhem and that they would rise up to lead the word; with in RCP's case, rebuilding the world on the ashes of capitalism.
It was the RCP types that pushed and shoved people trying to enter the recruiting station and it was RCP that lead the school kids to try and fight with the police at the station house during the Move America Forward rally.
The RCP symbol is a Red Star flag flying from a bayonet and rifle and for the kiddie poos of the Revolutionary Communist Youth Movement, the symbol is a Red Star from which a raised arm with a clenched fist. Of course the cleenched fist grasping that communist peace symbol, the AK-47 Assault Weapon.

These clowns have a notion that you can “unarrest” someone simply by playing tug of war with the cops using the suspect as the rope.
It's now Bezerkistan. With Sharia law coming any day now.
Power does not corrupt -- immunity from consequences is what corrupts. When you have no job that getting arrested can get you fired from, no assets (making you judgement-proof in a lawsuit) and no dependents that require you to make a living, then you can act like these
World Cant Wait is the Revolutionary Communist Party.

I stopped in at the Marine office early this AM while in Berkeley conducting business. Several fine recruits were gathering for pre induction physical training and Marine indoctrination. Recruiter said that Wednesdays and Fridays are usually the protest days.
Those kids look too young to remember much about the Clinton Regime.
Where does a person buy pepper spray?

That dude just uses his “activism” to get chicks.
He’s like a rock star to Pinko Gurlz.
AND this—
Battlecry is not a Chrisitan Military org.
It was a mega concert for young folk mostly Christians.
The protesters came to the concert and harassed
the kids. SO much for %^^$## tolerance.
