Two arrested in Berkeley Marine recruiting center protest
Contra Costa Times ^ | 2/22/8

BERKELEY -- Two people were arrested Friday after they encircled police during a protest of the U.S. Marine recruiting center, a police spokeswoman said.

A group called The World Can't Wait -- Drive Out the Bush Regime was demonstrating at the downtown center Friday to protest military recruiting in Berkeley.

The issue has been in the limelight recently after the City Council last month called the recruiters "uninvited and unwelcome intruders."

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Mary Kusmiss said about 20 protesters marched from the Marine recruiting center at 64 Shattuck Square to Shattuck Avenue and Center Street to rally for their cause.

Two Berkeley police bike officers followed the group to protect the community, she said.

At the corner of Shattuck and Center, a protester screamed into a megaphone, a violation of a city permit because it was away from the recruiting center, where protesters have a sound permit.

Police tried to detain him to talk about the violation, Kusmiss said.

At that point, the crowd surged and surrounded the bike officers and closed in on them, she said.

Police called for backup and at least a dozen cars arrived in downtown, Kusmiss said.

Kusmiss said officers had to use some force to make the arrests and protect their colleagues during the surge. No one was seriously injured although a couple of police officers sustained minor injuries, Kusmiss said.

Police arrested Rafael Schiller, 26 of Berkeley, and another man who refused to give his name, police said.

Officials from World Can't Wait were not immediately available for comment.

Police said the arrests were for resisting arrest, but the two could also face other charges for refusing to give their names and violating the city permit.

Where does a person buy pepper spray? Have never seen a source for it. Go on the Internet? This is a serious request.

Yeah, but be careful. Some communities regulate the concealed carry of things liks mace, pepper spray, etc. Can't have the sheep get too uppity.

Here’s a good article:

I googled “pepper spray” and “self-defense” and came up with lots of links.

A better idea: a drive-by in a full septic tank cleaner truck with the flow reversed. Better area coverage with a suitable substance.

“Police said the arrests were for resisting arrest,”

Hippies or not...this is the lamest charge I’ve ever seen used....it’s the “yeah we’re cops and you’re not” arrest...

“You’re under arrest”

“For what”?

“resisting arrest”
__________________________________________________________

Lame??? More lame than the cops standing by and allowing the protesters to block the entrance to the USMC station, and explaining that they would not help because the didn’t want to take sides!a protester screamed into a megaphone, a violation of a city permit because it was away from the recruiting center, where protesters have a sound permit.
From the article:

A Crowd, as described by the article numbering around 20...
lets see 2 cops vs ‘around 20’ wacked out idiots, not a nice situation for the cops. here’s the kicker...No one was seriously injured although a couple of police officers sustained minor injuries, Kusmiss said.
In some parts of the country this is called injury to a police officer?

Lame???? i hardly think so. How about assault, injury to a police officer. resisting arrest.

ok it isn’t a capital offense but for now it will do.

I'd pay good money to see that!

A better idea: a one hour tipoff to the Marines, and drop a daisy cutter on it.

Most are students or in the words of a friend of mine...”permanent” students. Unemployed folks are usually waiting for hand-outs or trying to get a day job to pay for a couple of meals for the next day or two. Also, if they were really unemployed...you’d see this type of action all over the US...especially in New York City...but you don’t. No unemployed guy would waste his time in such a manner.

I’m betting most of these folks are students, permanent students, or loser-spouses who don’t work and rely upon their partner or spouse for life essentials. A guy that has two kids in college...is never going to do this stupid stuff. A single mom with three kids...is never going to do this stupid stuff. A guy with a $1200 mortgage payment....is never going to do this stupid stuff. A guy with a terminally ill parent...is not going to do this stupid stuff. These are all special folks...with no life...no self value....no ownership of a home...no worries.

The petition

We, the undersigned condemn the Berkeley City Council’s treasonous attack on US Marine Recruiters stationed in their city. We ask that Congress cut off funds from any and all municipal entity within the confines of the city of Berkeley, California, until such time as the city council withdraws it’s action.

The City Council has voted to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting station is not welcome and “if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests.”

The measure passed last week by a vote of 8-1.

The council also voted to explore enforcing a city anti-discrimination law, focusing on the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

In a separate item, the council voted, also 8-1, to give the Marxist protest group Code Pink a parking space in front of the recruiting office once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week.

“Police arrested Rafael Schiller........”

I do believe that Mr Schiller likes to refer to himself as “Mr Schiller-Laden.”

“They took some large chains they brought with them in the morning and connected themselves together like a long chain gang,” she said.

The situation escalated when a crowd of more than 25 protestors began to encircle the officer and his partner, shoving and kicking them, Kusmiss said.

one participant began to incite the crowd, urging them to get Schiller back from the police while he forced his way past officers. The man, estimated to be in his 20s, was also arrested for obstructing or interfering with a peace officer but refused to identify himself.

I said THAT charge is lame....how about charging them aggravated menacing, a REAL charge...something they were doing...

Dont confuse my issue with lame arrest excuses with anykind of support for these hippies...

My neighbor was arrested for loitering......on his own front porch...

Simply an excuse to haul his but downtown for the inconvenience.....

Notice they didnt get in trouble for messing with marines.....they got in trouble for messing with cops...

A little good news from Berkeley even if the arrests were made ONLY because it was directed at the police.

Love violent “peace” protestors!

Don’t any of these idiots realize the “Bush Regime” will be “driven out” in about 10 months BECAUSE HE IS NOT RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION????

you found him also:

Rafael Schiller-Laden, is a youth and student organizer with the organization, World Can't Wait! He became politically active in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina when he became outraged at the Bush Administration's neglect and abuse of hurricane survivors. Since then, he has been mobilizing college and high school activism across the Bay Area, including anti-war protests, school walkouts and in-school teach-ins, reaching large student audiences (the "Mission of a Generation Speaking Tour"), and has recently been reaching out to tens of thousands with WCW's resistance at summer mega-concerts. Last summer he took WCW on its Red State Bus Tour across the Southern states and was involved in mobilizing against the notorious evangelical youth group "Battlecry" when it came to San Francisco to recruit teenagers into a militaristic, Christian Right movement. In the last few months Rafael was involved in an occupation of the FEMA building in Oakland on the 2nd anniversary of Katrina, and just recently. in confronting the College Republicans at SF State as they attempted to use the 6th anniversary of 9/11 to justify this endless war

In this interview, Rafael explains World Can't Wait's Call to Action. He describes the futility of ordinary protest and dares to hope and plan for driving out the Bush regime and completely repudiating its policies and practices, in order to save the best of American legal and political principles.
