Help us convince the GOP nominee to pick Haley Barbour as his vice-presidential running mate; and help convince Haley to say, YES! Our goal is to deliver a petition signed by 50,000 GOP supporters to the presumptive GOP nominee and to Governor Barbour by March 1, 2008.
Thank you!
I would like to go a little further,
and thank you for all of your comments
on this thread.
It’s no secret that FR’s resident Magnolia Mafia comprised of loud and opinionated Mississippians both current residents and expats alike love the old bulldogged faced Haley but outsiders will eschew him for making a living lobbying once.
He is very very popular in the State even amongst those who did not support him..
He did well with Katrina and has damaged the tort law oligarchs down there bigtime too.
He is a true social conservative.
Who McCain chooses as VP is as paramount as could be given his age and his lack of popularity with his base.
He will need someone to help sweep the South or he loses. We all know that and the Dems do too.
Haley would be a good choice but he may not want it.
same reason some Yankees can't help being assholes in spite of themselves I'd reckon
Nail on head.
I learned that about Free Republic over a 8 years ago right out of the gate.
I think there is a term limit there....
(?????)
Lordy...you are misbehavin’...and I love it!
Magnolia Mafia. I love it! Now what crime are we committing??? (just so I know what to deny when the time comes . . .) :-)
I love Haley, and so does hubby, but neither of us think he is right for the White House as POTUS or VPOTUS. He is very good at what he does. And he knows it. I’d like to know who he thinks would be a good VP choice for McCain.
I saw this on channel 3 news tonight.
Here we have the name of the absolute best man in the whole of politics mentioned as a possible VP for John McCain and yet, a couple of people here spew forth with anti-Southern bigotry and other nasty crap that’s both ignorant and shameful.
Haley Barbour would be a great asset to the ticket. He’d not only help carry the South and the religious right, he is not offensive to moderates in both parties or to Independents. He could step right into the role of POTUS and CIC which is the whole point of McCain’s VP, given MaC’s age.
I don’t care if Barbour is God’s gift to Conservatism, he ain’t gonna turn this ticket into a silk purse.
That is part of the problem. McCain THINKS he has made peace, but all he has done is pay lip service. There is no evidence that he really would stop illegal immigration, appoint true conservative judges, or apologize to the millions of Christians that he bad-mouthed back in 2000. He just doesn't show to be trustworthy.
Phil Bryent is right when he says Haley is still on “Storm Duty”. He wants to finish the job out.
Now as President in 2012/16????
No chance McCain puts a former lobbyist on the ticket now.
Oh, I don't know...maybe because we southern fried hicks are the most dependable voting block in presidential elections?
I wish I could be an intelligent yankee like you.
Kill yourself.
Nah, he was just re-elected, so he’ll be Gov. for four more years. That works for me!
As a Veep, he wouldn't have to LEAD anyone, but he could bring some good ideas to the ticket.
My, aren't WE snarky? I guess the reason so many Republicans look to the South for their candidates is because more Southern Republican are actually CONSERVATIVE.
they must have changed it
i remember Cliff Finch (ol Cliff)tried to change the law but failed
anybody remember?
There are some very ignorant children posting here today who obviously do not even know who Haley Barbour is, much less wshat he did for us back in the '90s.
We have a limit of 2 terms for the Gov.
Ray Mabus (1988-1992)was the first Gov who was eligible
to run for reelection. Kirk Fordice(R) beat
him and was reelected 4 years later. Ronnie Musgrove (D)
and Mike Parker(R) ran the next time.
Neither candidate received a majority of the popular vote, the Mississippi House of Representatives had to select the winner. They chose Musgrove. Had the House voted as their districts
did Parker would have been the winner.
Then Haley beat Musgrove and John A Eaves.
