NYT to McCain: Shut Up and Let Us Destroy You
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 02/21/2008 8:30:44 PM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

From Elisabeth Bumillers' New York Times follow-up article of today [emphasis added]:

Later in the day, one of Mr. McCain’s senior advisers directed strong criticism at The Times in what appeared to be a deliberate campaign strategy to wage a war with the newspaper. Mr. McCain is deeply distrusted by conservatives on several issues, not least because of his rapport with the news media, but he could find common ground with them in attacking a newspaper that many conservatives revile as a left-wing publication.

Let me get this straight. The Times has run an article relying as sources on anonymous, disgruntled former staffers dredging up old stories and making base accusations with no hard evidence in support. But it's McCain who's waging war?

Please don't confuse the issue with facts.

To paraphrase a quote from Rush Limbaugh on his show today regarding the New York Times story on Senator McCain, in response to an agitated caller who cited the Times' Senior Editor's past indiscretions and how McCain should put him on notice:

'There is one problem: McCain likes the N.Y. Times.'

And quite frankly, I could not agree with Rush more on this one. When you lie down with dogs you get up with fleas. I sincerely hope this incident will open the eyes of the top level RNC officials in Washington. This is what the grassroots Conservatives of the Republican party have been literally screaming for years:

The Drive By Media CANNOT and SHOUL NOT be trusted by ANY Republican or Conservative!

This is the reason Ronald Reagan NEVER appealed to these ankle biters and went straight to the people and got more done, despite having a Democrat controlled House and Senate.

During the radio news breaks they were saying things like Senator McCain says he was fully co-operative with the NY Times’ investigation.

And I was like: So the NY Times is like the police or something now?

I’m still trying to figure out why the NYT did this. To secretly help McCain? Maybe they have more info, and they’re just giving McCain enough rope to hang himself? Maybe the NYT really thinks they have enough power to print totally bogus stories and get away with it? (They’ve been doing that for years, after all)

From what I can see from my channel surfing, all the other MSM outlets are keeping their distance from this story, except the usual gang of idiots at MSNBC. Oblie and that snotty kid who follows him were wallowing in it tonight. The kid even had his daddy on to tell Jr. how smart he was.

“Mr. McCain is deeply distrusted by conservatives on several issues, not least because of his rapport with the news media, but he could find common ground with them in attacking a newspaper that many conservatives revile as a left-wing publication.”

So, IMO in reading between the lines so-to-speak, the NYT apparently thought due the disgruntlement over McPain of the Republican base, we would accept their sleezy fairytale without question.

Note to NYT: McPain may be a two faced twit, but he’s our two faced twit, and we don’t like sleezy Leftist MSM anonymously sourced mischaracterizations of our two faced twits.

I watched part of Hannity & Colmes on FOX News tonight and that two-legged freak show, Gerlado Rivera, was defending the Times saying we should wait and see if the paper is forthcoming with evidence to back up their smears. Geraldo had to defend the Times because he himself is a news garbageman.

Good one! This article by Former Congressman John LeBoutillier titled MCCAIN’S HISTORY OF ABUSING THE PUBLIC TRUST shows there will be more.

I don’t like these personal attacks but it looks like there could be a lot of them coming.

The Times attitude reminds me of McCain’s attitude toward conservatives that opposed his and Ted Kennedy’s McShamnesty bill.

McCain “defending his McCain-Kennedy-Bush “comprehensive immigration reform” — screamed “f*#@% you” at Texas Republican John Cornyn, one of the bill’s leading opponents. He’s also told Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Arlen Specter that he was a colorful anatomical term and referred to Sen. Charles Grassley a “#$%^#*^ jerk.”

The reason is clear, the Obama’s got themselves in their first “jam”, the NYT Boyz had been sitting on the story for awhile, and Mrs. McCain just took the first step at defining a difference between the McCain’s and the Obama’s.

Add up..1. Obama’s in a bind 2. Repubs acting perfect again 3. NYT story prewritten that not only makes the McCain’s look bad, but removes the “I hate America until now” stuff and there you have it.

This whole thing goes to show how naive RINOs are:

They thought the MSM would continue to support McCain

They thought conservatives would just fall right in line

They thought McCain could win with “moderate” and independents supporting him...the people can barely support themselves.

They thought the Washington and New York represented the rest of the country

I’m sorry you’re “disappointed,” John. Here’s your problem: Conservatives are the only friends you can have from now on and you haven’t sent us a Christmas card lately.

We’re waiting.

I couldn't agree with you more and as for the “I hate America until now” stuff...well she can't keep her mouth shut forever. A wise man can pretend to be a fool but a fool can't pretend to be a wise man.

McCain’s response to the Times smear was weak.
I don’t think saying he was “disappointed” really goes far enough.
Perhaps McCain has spent too long in the Senate if he thinks those are hard-hitting words.
Reminds me of Tom Daschle. McCain needs to wake up and learn how to wage a campaign in front of the citizens instead of in front of senators.

He should have said the story was an OUTRAGE and was a personal attack on his family. Maybe it’s not too late to recast it as that, but certainly he missed the opportunity to give it impact.
