California exodus turns to stampede

WASHINGTON – California, which once lured Americans from near and far, is now driving out millions of the most productive residents – including high percentages of the most affluent.

"When California faced a Mount Everest-sized $14 billion deficit in 2003, one of the major causes for the red ink was the stampede of millionaire households from the state," says a report called "Rich States, Poor States" by economists Arthur Laffer and Stephen Moore. "Out of the 25,000 or so seven-figure-income families, more than 5,000 left in the early 2000s, and the loss of their tax payments accounted for about half the budget hole."

And it's not just the rich leaving.

Based on data from moving companies, California had the second-highest domestic population out-flow of any state in 2005, according to the report, "despite the beautiful weather, beaches, and mountains."

The bad news for California is that it faces $14 billion deficit this year, despite boasting one of the highest tax burdens in the nation.

The report, published by the American Legislative Exchange Council shows jobs are not just leaving the country – they are moving from state to state, with the population following.

"States are in direct competition with each other for human capital and business investment. State governments that think they can attract jobs and people, and grow their economies, by taxing their citizens at a higher rate than their neighbors are sadly mistaken," said Democratic Arkansas state Sen. Steve Faris, ALEC's 2008 national chairman. "Legislators should take a close look at where their state ranks in this book and use it as a tool to help them improve."

Hey, check out Las Vegas Nevada, Nevada's biggest city compared to LA, California's biggest city. lol...

Vegas has higher crime rates per capita than LA Cal in 6 out of the 7 major crime categories.

See, "Los Angeles" is the entire greater Los Angeles Basin. That's what data you need to be comparing other cities to.

Otherwise, you're trying to tell me someone could say "Oh, no. I don't live in Los Angeles at all. I live in Vernon!".

Right. One half mile away from the center of what you call 'Los Angeles' is Vernon. 92 people live there. Probably full-time premises security guards living outside of factories in trailers. It's all manufacturing plants and railroad tracks.

Now notice in the link above that 'Vernon' even has their own separate little data table on that site. Oh, and notice that nothing bad ever happens in Vernon. No-one was murdered there in 2006. That's because Vernon is entirely industrial. "Exclusively Industrial Since 1905" is even the city motto. Yet, Vernon is it's own city and part of "Los Angeles".

Perhaps you ought to compare the entire Los Angeles Area to Knoxville TN and see what you find, OK?

However, everyone from Los Angeles knows that Compton is indeed part of "Los Angeles". After all, the police that patrol there may show 'Compton Police Department' on their shoulder patch, but they're really LAPD.

You just proved you haven't a clue here. Compton is not part of LA city, it's a completely different city. And no, Compton is now patrolled by LASD, (county sheriff) which is not the LAPD.

Give up man....Compton is not LA, nor is it a major city.

Oh, I believe that about Las Vegas. No doubt. It's a 24-hour alcohol fueled gambling town catering to wild-assed Southern Californians come to raise hell. Lots of crime and violence there. I have no need to go there, but if I do, I go well armed.

Thank goodness it's also extraordinarily far away from the snowy little mountain pass where I live upstate. It would probably take me 15 hours to drive there.

Amen. Trouble is, they are bringing their horror with them. Occasionally, I pick up a copy of the Chattanooga Free Press. (more aptly named when they called it the "News Free Press") Just about every time I browse this rag I see letters to the editor complaining about recent transplants living in rural areas and not having garbage service, or dog catchers or about "horror" of merely seeing somebody driving around with a shotgun in the gun rack of their truck or some other such nonsense.

We're the "Volunteer State". Take out your own garbage and catch your own dogs and enough with the gun envy.

1. The first guy looks like he may have too many teeth to be a native.

I had no idea I'd stir up so much anger here by posting some crime facts in regards to comparing *major* cities crime statistics.

Clearly you two and others here did not like the fact that California's largest city, LA has considerably less crime than most other *large* cities in other states.

It's revealing to see those that are annoyed that places like Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Oklahoma City, Indianapolis, Miami, Richmond Virgina etc etc etc all have more crime per capita than Los Angeles, Cal.

Some have been so annoyed by the truth here, they've accused me of "Skewing the facts" yet the charts and statistics are not mine. One even suggested that the stats being provided are just some small industrial area in downtown LA where no one lives. LOL!
