'The Day She Died, She Knew She Couldn't Talk To Police,' Mom Says
DELAND, Fla. -- A Central Florida woman whose 17-year-old daughter was killed in a murder-suicide apparently committed by her ex-boyfriend said the teen was told by police to stop calling for help or she'd be arrested.
Police said Clay Coffner shot his estranged girlfriend, Natasha Hall, in the head outside her DeLand home Friday before turning the gun on himself.
Hall's mother, Sherry, said her daughter was concerned about Coffner and informed police.
In fact, Hall said her daughter called police so much that on Jan. 15 they threatened her.
"The police officer said if you call us one more time on him, I'm going to arrest you both," Sherry Hall said. "So, the day she died, she knew she couldn't talk to police. So, she handled it herself."
Michele Karpowicz said everyone noticed the warning signs before the homicide -- except police.
"I was going crazy," Hall's best friend said. "He was psycho, jealous and abusive."
Local 6 is trying to obtain a police call log to determine how many times the teen called police.
DeLand police officials have not responded to the allegations.
The Second Amendment is the ultimate (authentic) feminist issue. This beautiful young girl should have been armed. And trained to use her weapon properly.
It's a shame, but at 17, you'd think there was a relative to send her off to for awhile.
I guess, even when people are afraid, they still think maybe bad stuff won't really happen? Poor girl.

If she had called and reported her neighbor smoking pot, the SWAT team would have busted into her house by mistake and saved her.

I’ve seen cases before where the girl keeps calling the police to protect her against an ex that keeps threatening her, the police tell her to come in and press charges or file a restraining order, but the girl refuses to do so. Next, at the girl’s invitation “since he now promises to be good” the girl and her ex are back together again and when she gets threatened some more, she calls the police again, thinking they’re her personal security team.
If she keeps refusing to file charges the police will eventually grow tired of her. Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case here.

Sad but realistic
Ahhh - family justice - probably has a much better (lower) rate of recidivism than just about any other system. My mom tells a story of one her older sisters who was being routinely beaten by her worthless husband. Until, of course, the six brothers found out, all of whom served in various branches of the military circa WWII. They took him out to the barn and had a “friendly chat”, after which this scumbag decided he wasn’t so interested in beatings anymore...
“There is no situation so bad it cannot be made worse by the presence of a policeman”.
This girls mistake was thinking the police actually help anyone.....and it cost her life.
If she had tried to protect herself....then the police would have arrived....to arrest her.
Makes you wonder who the real criminals are.....
I suspect there’s a lot more to this story than has been presented at this point. It could turn out to be as bad as it sounds right now, but it’s going to take time to gather up all the pieces and assemble the puzzle.
Sadly, I have little faith in those who will be gathering the pieces. I have no concrete, absolute reason for my lack of faith, just a nagging feeling that’s been years in the making that police tend to protect their own. It’s human nature. Doctors do it, plumbers do it, we all do it.

Why didn’t the girl or her family get a restraining order?
That doesn't excuse the police not responding, they should have come, but beyond that, they can't force him to stay away from her or vice versa absenct attempted murder, assault (could have jailed him for that), except by restraining order.
She should have gotten a restraining order for starters. They are worthless, especially when the person getting it keeps letting the person back in their lives, or the other person keeps forcing their way back in their life. The State of Illinois arrests any party who breaks the restraining order.
After having gotten one, yes, she should have done something to protect herself, get away from him. She was young, may not have understood the seriousness of how these things can escalate. It isn't clear if she was still living in her family home or what here. Being 17, and a minor, one might think her parents could have done something, too.
Having watched the New World Order take away Kosovo and give it to the Islamo-fascists and watching Jorge Bush's flagrant disregard to secure our borders from illegal alien criminals, I must conclude that only a fool continues to rely on government to protect himself, his family and the people he loves. A mature person knows he now must look to himself for his own survival.
Can you tell me why they didn’t take her calls seriously, regardless of how many times she called? Two people are dead because of their failure to act.
I also wonder why the mother didn’t do anything. The first option would always be to send the girl to live with friends or relatives, but if she didn’t have that resource, I’m sure a battered women’s shelter would have taken the girl.
This kind of thing should always be taken seriously by friends and relatives.
