Leaders of about 400 members of the Minnesota National Guard who have been deployed to Kosovo as part of a United Nations peacekeeping force describe the atmosphere there as "energized, well-mannered and tense" after the former Yugoslavian province declared independence on Sunday.
"The next few days are likely to be tense for Kosovo as the new country awaits international recognition," said Lt. Col. Michael Funk, commander of 2nd Battalion, 135th Infantry, a Mankato-based unit.
Minnesota troops are largely stationed in a southeastern portion of Kosovo, where independence demonstrations were described as peaceful and limited to some sporadic celebratory gunfire. But Funk said soldiers have been advised to be on higher alert in the coming days.
"There is naturally more tension in the streets since independence has been declared," Funk said in a telephone conference call with reporters.

They’ll do us proud, in spite of the UN.
Get the US OUT OF THE UN. And the UN OUT OF THE US!
Yes, we have reason to be proud of all our military. They are given a mission and follow through with honor.
In this case, the mission should never have been undertaken, though. They are helping to establish a seperate muslim country in Europe. That is not the fault of the military or the fine people who serve, but the fault of a Clinton-era decision.
How long have we been in Kosovo? How long were we supposed to be there? Who was President at the time?
Waiting for Pelosi to call for a withdrawal.
Someone needs to ask Obama if he thinks that we will be in Kosovo for 100 years.
It’s a shame that US service men and women are being used to help prop up a new Jihadist state in Europe.
What a great victory for Jihad.
What a great victory for illegal immigration.
One again, the Policy of America could do us harm. Not the American People.
I read that link—a long story and I saw no mention of the Islamic dominance in Kosovo. Brit news scared of the M-word!
What is Clinton’s exit strategy?
Why don’t we leave?
Maybe we’re afraid of the Russians reestablishing their sphere of influence in that part of the world?
Because US Army Base Camp Bondsteel has a 99 year lease, IIRC.
Serbia even when it was Communist Yugoslavia, was a strong opponent of Russia. In deference to a more moderate Serbia (compared to its ethnic cleansing days), perhaps we shouldn’t have taken the side of this new rump state of Kosovo.
Wouldn’t be hilarious if Barak Hussein Obama was the Mahdi. Talking about hiding in plain site.
