People musing about what keeps Mike Huckabee in the race for the presidency have wondered if he's sowing the ground for future television deals, angling for a vice presidential nod or getting ready to run for the White House again in 2012...
He told half a dozen audiences over the last three days in Wisconsin that he can still win or, at the very least, give voice to conservative voters not yet sold on the presumptive Republican Party nominee, Sen. John McCain of Arizona...
They called out "Amen!" as their man noted he was the only remaining candidate to support a constitutional amendment to ban abortion. They hooted in affirmation as he tore up another 1040 form on stage -- symbolic of his pledge to abolish the Internal Revenue Service in favor of a national sales tax. They chuckled knowingly when Huckabee, a 2nd Amendment champion, talked about how he and wife, Janet, toted concealed weapons when he was in the governor's mansion in Little Rock. (The punch line: "And she's the one you'd better look out for.") ...
One minute, he is joking to voters in La Crosse that they should simply let the air out of the car tires of voters who will support McCain on Tuesday. The next, he is telling reporters that, if more "law-abiding" citizens carried guns, tragedies like Thursday's mass shooting at an Illinois university might have been prevented...
Yet even friendly venues can't spare Huckabee from repeated questions about why he soldiers on...
Huckabee has several answers to the question: that McCain could still stumble. That he won't be forced out by Washington insiders. That he still speaks for many voters, whom he refuses to let down...

The longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: that God governs the affairs of man [Romans 8:28]. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice [Matthew 10:29], is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it [Psalms 127:1]. I firmly believe this. I also believe that, without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel [Genesis 11:1-9].

Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.

Yes, Huck can still win. Remember War of the Worlds? If the aliens attack the Republican convention before the final vote, and Huck is out with his son hunting squirrils or dogs in the park during one of the breaks, and his son is also a delegate, and the aliens eat all the other candidates and delegates, and then the aliens die of influenza right afterwards, then Huck’s son will vote for him and Huck will rule the universe!!!

Exactly! That’s the spirit, right there! Real conservatives aren’t quitters!
A lot can happen between now and the end of August.
On a more pragmatic level, however, Huckabee will probably not win the nomination, and the Republicans have a lot of work ahead of them if they are to have a chance at defeating the Democrat candidate (and McCain trumps both Clinton and Obama, if only for his stance on Iraq and abortion--which isn't good, but isn't as bad as the other two's).
My family is voting for him in Ohio. McCain will end up with the nomination, but we want to show the GOP establishment that we are not satisfied with McCain and would prefer someone who is conservative (Huck isn’t the most conservative but better than McCain). I’ve considered crossing over for the Hildabeast in order to stop Obama because I don’t think McCain can’t beat him in the general, but I can’t bring myself to do it.
I am a Huckabee supporter and I did vote for him in my primary. I did a lot of research and found that a lot of what was being said about him was propaganda. That’s not to say he doesn’t have some issues I have problems with, but overall, I felt he was the best candidate for me. Social issues are my biggest concern because I feel that once this country does not value them, then nothing else matters.
It’s only two weeks until March 4th and that is when McCain will “probably” go over 1191. If McCain is so weak that he cannot withstand another candidate in the race for two weeks, then I think that says a lot.
I do hope that Huckabee will not quit if that happens and will rather suspend his campaign just like Romney has done because there are an awful lot of uncommitted delegates and I still think a surprise could come out of the convention.
For the record, I would have voted for Romney in the GE, but not in the primary and I have talked to a lot in my area that feel the same way. It wasn’t that Romney was a Mormon that he did not win here, it’s just that he wasn’t our first choice and that is primarily due to his flip-flops on life and marriage issues.
I still believe in miracles and pray that we end up with someone other than McCain at the convention and if not, well...I will stick to being a conservative, but will not defend the GOP any longer.
It's just way too pathetic watching him die this slow death.
It does appear, however, that he failed "Political Calculus 101".
Noteworthy: Isn’t Ron Paul still in the race, and isn’t he far behind Huckabee?
I’m just saying.
All Huckabee needs is a macaca moment.
In the event that McCain wins, is there any reason to believe that his successor would be any less liberal than he is now? Or can you suggest any plausible means by which we would ever have a President who isn't as liberal as McCain is now, without having had an intervening President who is at least as bad as the Democrats?
I see zero reason for Republicans to invest any money or political capital on John McCain's run for the Presidency, except perhaps to the extent that it could force the Democrats to commit more resources of their own to the effort. Money and political capital would be much better spent on Congress.
Maccaca moments only work if the press is out to destroy someone very conservative. I don’t see that happening with Huckabee.
When I said macaca moment, I meant McCain, because he is more likely to have one.
An open convention is still possible, and persuading me to concede the nomination to McCain isn’t, so if anyone’s tilting at windmills here, it’s you.
:-)
I'm not interested in persuading you. I'm interested in who wins the nomination. Unless McCain has some sort of total meltdown in the next six months, I don't see an open convention. And if there is an open convention, I'd expect it to pick Romney over McCain.
