Ronald Reagan Would Back McCain

By Michael Reagan

Thursday, February 14, 2008

In 1976 the Ford vs. Reagan campaign for the Republican presidential nomination got so heated it looked as if my father and Jerry Ford would never again talk to one another.

When it was over and Ford had won, what did Ronald Reagan do? He simply went all-out to help Ford win his re-election, as did I and as did my sister Maureen. My dad simply followed his rule of backing the Republican candidate no matter who he was.

Assuming that John McCain will be the Republican nominee, you can bet my father would be itching to get out on the campaign trail working to elect him even if he disagreed with him on a number of issues.

Unlike my father, a lot of conservatives stayed home in 1976, and we got four years of Jimmy Carter, whose main legacy was to drive the Shah of Iran from power and create the Islamic Republic of Iran with a bunch of wild-eyed mullahs running the show. He also gave us 20 percent inflation and long, long lines at the gas pumps. And don't forget 440 days of Americans held hostage by the mullahs.

By staying home those conservatives made possible the future election of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

We are still suffering from the legacy of James Earl Carter, thanks to the conservatives who refused to follow Ronald Reagan's example and instead sulked at home while the nation was being handed over to the worst president in American history.

We were still in the middle of the Cold War in those days, and by staying home conservatives risked losing that war by allowing an incompetent leader to become commander in chief.

Four years later Ronald Reagan took over, the hostages were immediately released, and he went on to win the Cold War. Now we have another world-wide war going on with a hidden enemy sworn to kill us all, and the policy of the Democrats running for the presidency is to throw up their hands and withdraw from the battlefield, leaving it to the enemy -- and our fate in the hands of Osama bin Laden.

Is that what the let's-stay-home-on-election-day conservatives want? Do they want the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate, Barack Obama, as their president? Do they want the pseudo-Marist Barack Obama -- who reportedly has a photo of the murderous Castroite thug Che Guevara hanging in his Houston, Texas campaign headquarters -- hanging that photo in the Oval Office?

Do they want Hillary Clinton, the duplicitous former first lady, back in the White House enjoying all those furnishings she and her husband tried to swipe from the mansion?

Do they want a Democrat spending even more money that the government doesn't have on scores of programs right out of Karl Marx's playbook?

That's exactly what they'll get if they sit out the election and stay home on Election Day. That's called biting off your nose to spite your face. Or even more to the point, political suicide.

Let me say this. There has been plenty of battling in the primaries, and I've been in the middle of the battle, but until now haven't committed myself to any candidate, waiting until we had a nominee.

That's over.

If John McCain is the nominee of the party, this Reagan will happily campaign with him. The alternative is unthinkable to anyone who loves this nation.

I accept your opinion for what it is. At least I’ll have a party I can work for in good concience, something I don’t have today.

Take care.

There is no way he will overcome "conservative defections".

I don't see any traditionally red state that McCain will lose, other than possibly Ohio. Any Republican candidate would have problems in Ohio this election but I like McCain's chances more than any of the other Republican candidates.

That may be true, but it is also important to understand that the levers being pulled may not be just the voters in the booth.

My point is that we should also be wary of levers being pulled on us, and the demonization of Gerald Ford is clearly that, in my opinion. It was a concerted and concentrated effort by the media to do just that, and I think they were very, very successful.

All conservatives are demonized by the main stream press. That goes without saying. I’m just talking about giving them less material to work with; unlike John McCain, I dont’ question Gerald Fords’ courage under fire, but manhood starts in the mind, in knowing when being “bi-partisan” is just a sell out. I doubt Gerald Ford would have the “mental manhood” to lead the necessary tax revolution that Ronald Reagan lead or to plan the defeat of the Soviet Union. There are some conservatives who are too nice, like Gerald Ford. There are some that are too crazy, and self-seeking, like John McCain.

I still say Reagan should’ve run third party. Ford was a disliked President (sound familiar?) who was almost certain to lose the general election anyway. But to quote him, since that’s the vogue thing to do.... “I didn’t leave the party... the party left me.”

I agree with the entirety of your post. An R loss here will mean decades of ruin, because there IS no Ronald Reagan on the horizon. The DEMS sh!t a JFK surrogate in 4 years, we don’t work that way.

The GOP establishment types are scared to death that rank and file conservatives won’t support McCain.

I am voting for McCain if he is the nominee because it is the right thing to do. Michael Reagan learned from his father, Mitt Romney learned from his father, and I learned from mine. If your guy isn't picked for Team Captain you do not take your ball and go home. Only losers behave like that. I am voting against Hillary/Obama.

Liberals and Ford Republicans claimed that Reagan was crazy, too far out there to be President. I will stay with Reagan’s principles. You can join Juan if you like. Enjoy your socialism.

But he was loyal to his party and when he lost he still stayed and fought for it. In his case he tried to prevent Jimmy Carter from happening.

“No US President past, current or candidate now running gets the illegals issue”
>>>>>>>>>>.................
I disagree they get it. Now the question is why do they promote it?
McCain claims to support a strong USA while destroying it from inside, He went to Nam , I went to Nam , he screwed up ,and paid a price, I do not want to screw up and pay a price by supporting an enemy to limited government and a strong independent AMERICA.
John McCain will bring down the GOP per plan, but the plan will fail in the end see my tag line.

But he wouldn’t shaft the nominee and he wouldn’t speak poorly of a fellow Republican.

Let’s be clear, Reagan was a good conservative but also a good party man as well.

by your thoughts you are revealed ..by your logic the
Murder of millions under Stalin would be supported ..
those that did the killing were after all good party men.
If that is your strongest Argument for John McCain you are
able to support anything and anyone who heads the GOP. and perhaps you do.

If John McCain can vote on the basis of principle and conscience over the party, so can I. I cannot be complicit in the destruction of this country by voting for someone who supports amnesty. I have invested too much time and effort fighting McCain, Kennedy, et. al. on this issue to vote for them. This issue transcends partisan politics. I will not vote for John McCain nor will anyone in my family. It is a matter of principle.

I can only speak for myself. I am not trying to convince anyone not to vote for McCain. I just won't.

You do a good job trying to explain your point, but the people you are trying to make it to are either unwilling or unable to acknowledge it. It is a waste of electrons.
