“Israel’s No. 1 most wanted terrorist assassinated
Hezbollah leader also behind 1983 Beirut bombings killing Americans”
Posted: February 13, 2008

By Aaron Klein
WorldNetDaily

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “JAFFA, Israel – The deputy commander of the Hezbollah terrorist organization, responsible for infamous deadly attacks against the U.S. and Israel, including involvement in the 1983 bombing of a U.S. Marine barracks in Lebanon, was killed in a car bomb blast in Syria today.

Imad Mughniyah was Israel’s No. 1 most-wanted terrorist, even ahead of Hezbollah chieftain Hassan Nasrallah. Mughniyah was considered one of the most dangerous terrorists in the world by Western intelligence agencies. He led Hezbollah’s “international terror branch,” directly orchestrating attacks against foreign targets, according to Israeli security officials. He was widely considered Nasrallah’s successor.

Mughniyah was accused of helping to plan the 1983 Marine barracks attack in which 300 were killed and also the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut that same year, killing 63 people.

He was responsible for the 1985 hijacking of a TWA passenger jet and the murder of one of its passengers, a soldier in the U.S. navy. Mughniyah was indicted for the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires killing 85 people. A warrant was issued for his arrest for the 1992 bombing of the Israeli Embassy also in Buenos Aires in which 29 people died. Argentinean officials have publicly pointed a finger at Iran for aiding in those attacks.

(Story continues below)

Also serving as commander of Islamic Jihad in the 1980’s, Mughniyah is accused of kidnapped dozens of Western hostages, including Americans, killing some of them, such as the CIA’s Middle East station chief.”

Interesting. One would have thought the family of a hunted mass murderer would have been eliminated or in hiding.

I’m sorry for the loss of any life, but I doubt they mourned for all the people Mughniyeh killed (or was going to kill) directly and/or indirectly.

The problem is, there will be retaliation, or attempts.

“Syria: Mughniyeh assassination ‘a cowardly terrorist act’”
By JPOST.COM STAFF AND AP

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Syria’s Interior Minister Brig. Gen. Bassam Abdul-Majid confirmed Wednesday that a Damascus explosion killed a senior member of the militant Hizbullah, Imad Mughniyeh, the state-run news agency SANA reported.

It was the first official comment from Syria since Tuesday night’s explosion in the Damascus neighborhood of Kfar Sousse. The agency quoted Abdul-Majid as saying an investigation into the blast was under way.”

Based on his targets, it would seem that the U.S. would have more at stake to stop him than Israel. At least I would hope that it was us that did him in.

“MUGHNIYEH ASSASSINATION: ANOTHER SETBACK FOR IRAN’S INTELLIGENCE AGENCY”
February 13, 2008 7:58 AM

SNIPPET: “The assassination of Hezbollah kingpin Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus is a major blow to his boss, the Iranian intelligence network. PJM’s Meir Javedanfar notes that this is their latest of many recent setbacks.”

by Meir Javedanfar

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The assassination of Imad Mughniyeh, Iran’s top man in Syria and Lebanon, should set off alarm bells in Tehran. His assassination, according to Iranian media sources, took place in the Kafarsoose neighborhood of Damascus, close to an Iranian school and the headquarters of the Syrian Mukhabarat (intelligence agency). At first glance, the elimination of such a highly valuable Iranian asset, under the very noses of the Syrians, could be taken as a sign that Western intelligence agencies have managed to infiltrate the once seemingly impenetrable walls of Iran’s intelligence operations abroad.”

“Imad Mughniyeh: Hezbollah’s Phantom Killed”

13/02/2008
By Ali Nourizadeh
London, Asharq Al-Awsat-

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “According to an Iranian source, who met Mughniyeh on more than one occasion in Iran, the elusive figure had undergone plastic surgery to change his facial features in 1990. He then returned to Beirut incognito, under a new name and a false identity, with an Iranian diplomatic passport. Using several forged Lebanese, Syrian, Iranian and Pakistani passports, Mughniyeh successfully planned and executed a number of terrorist operations in Argentina in the mid 1990s, including the bombing of a Jewish center in Buenos Aires in 1994, killing 85.

During his constant traveling, Mughniyeh met Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri in Sudan, where al Qaeda’s leader had established training centers in farms, while the revolutionary guards were also active in the country, under the guise of “Jihad for construction” organization, which was responsible for building roads and installations. When Mughniyeh’s cover was blown, he returned to Iran where he underwent a second operation and completely changed his look.

Between 1997 and the invasion of Iraq in 2003, Mughniyeh traveled between Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, Pakistan and northern Iraq, and assisted al Qaeda leaders to cross from Afghanistan to Iran. He then played a role in moving fighters loyal to bin Laden from Afghanistan to Iraq, through Iranian territory, by exploiting his relationships with the revolutionary guards, al Zawahiri, Saad bin Laden and Mohammed al Islambouli, whose brother assassinated the Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.

In 2005, he was tasked with organizing relations between the different Shiaa armed factions in southern Iraq. Mughniyeh then became the field supervisor of the revolutionary guard’s intelligence bureau in the region. That same year, he traveled to Lebanon through Syria, accompanied by Iranian officials, under the name of Sayyid Mehdi Hashemi, an Iranian national with a diplomatic passport.

In early 2006, reports indicated Mughniyeh had been seen in the city of Basra, where he is alleged to have been facilitating the entry of Mehdi army fighters into Iran, to take part in military training. In April, Mughniyeh was said to have returned to Lebanon where he held senior positions in Hezbollah’s intelligence services and, according to Israeli sources, planned the operation to kidnap Israeli soldiers, based on orders from Iran’s revolutionary guards.

That same month, the Sunday Times newspaper reported that Mughniyeh took part in meeting between the Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Syrian counterpart, according to security experts.”

“Iran Qods Force infiltrates Iraq”
By CLAUDE SALHANI (Editor, Middle East Times)Published: February 08, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “New information was brought to light Thursday revealing “an overwhelming amount of intelligence indicating a political-military buildup by Tehran’s mullahs, targeting not just the south, but the heart of Iraq.”
This information, collected by the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (also known as the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, or the MeK), was made public by Alireza Jafarzadeh, president of Strategic Policy Consulting, Inc., an outfit based in Washington, D.C. with close ties to the MeK.

According to Jafarzadeh this latest move by Tehran “can only be interpreted as indicating an aggressive buildup, by an aggressive regime with an aggressive agenda.”

Iran’s plan, according to Jafarzadeh, is to expand its terrorist network in Iraq through the deployment of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps’ elite units – the Qods Force.”

WARDEN MESSAGE: BEIRUT EXPLOSION
U.S. Embassy Beirut issued the following Warden Message on February 13:

On Tuesday, February 12, a senior Hizballah operative, Imad Fayez Mugniyah, was killed in an explosion in Syria. Mugniyah will reportedly be buried in southern Beirut tomorrow afternoon, February 14, 2008. The funeral will take place on the same day as a large rally to be held in Martyr’s Square in central Beirut to mark the third anniversary of the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri. Given that each event is expected to draw large crowds in a time of political uncertainty, the U.S. Embassy strongly encourages American citizens in Lebanon to limit all but essential travel on February 14. The U.S. Embassy will be restricting the travel of its personnel for that day and may continue restrictions several days beyond it. The U.S. Embassy encourages Americans that absolutely need to travel on February 14 to avoid central and southern Beirut if possible, to maintain a heightened level of awareness and to report any suspicious or unusual activity immediately to Lebanese authorities. U.S. citizens should, as always, maintain a low profile in public.

The U.S. Embassy will remain open; however, the consular section will not perform routine services on February 14. Americans and non-Americans with appointments for routine consular services have already been contacted and their appointments rescheduled. If you have made an appointment for February 14 for routine visa or passport services and have not been contacted, please call the Embassy to have your appointment rescheduled.

For the latest security information, Americans should regularly monitor the Department’s web site at http://travel.state.gov/ where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, including the Travel Warning for Lebanon, and Travel Alerts can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S. and Canada, or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

Americans living or traveling in Lebanon are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov/, so that they can obtain updated information on travel and security within Lebanon. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

The U.S. Embassy is located in Awkar, near Antelias, Beirut, Lebanon. Public access hours for American citizens are by appointment, Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. American citizens may request an appointment by e-mailing BeirutACS@state.gov and specifying the service they require or by calling 04 543 600 and asking for the American Citizen Services Section on Mondays or Fridays between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. However, American citizens who require emergency services outside of these hours may contact the Embassy by telephone at any time. The telephone numbers are (961-4) 542-600, 543-600, and fax 544-209. Website:http://lebanon.usembassy.gov. The Arabic language website is: http://arabic.lebanon.usembassy.gov/.

DEBKAfile: Tehran, Damascus, Hizballah leadership believed coordinating retaliation for Mughniyeh’s death

February 13, 2008, 11:34 PM (GMT+02:00)

The Pajero jeep Mughniyeh drove alone to his death This is how anxious Western and Israeli counter-terror agencies interpret the muted responses to the killing of Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus Tuesday, Feb. 12. Iran, Syria and Hizballah are certain that the bomb planted in the master terrorist’s Mitsubishi Pajero in the heart of the Syrian capital was rigged by the Israeli Mossad. They are therefore most certainly setting up a major reprisal in the form of a terrorist hit or a military assault.

Wednesday night, all Hizballah’s top leaders went to ground. They even gave the mourning tent set up in the Shiite district of Beirut for their dead leader a wide berth.

Our sources report that the long-sought terrorist was finally despatched by a small explosive inserted between the driver’s seat and the back seats, which destroyed only one part of the vehicle. The front and rear remained intact. Mughniyeh was driving alone to a reception marking Islamic Revolution Day at the Iranian embassy in the Romana district.

DEBKAfile’s counter-terror experts note that the way the explosion was set up recalled the method used by the hit team which killed the Jihad Islami senior operative Ghaleb Ghali in Damascus in October 2004. Then, too, Syria held Israel responsible.
