When asked about the 29 Republican-held seats that will go up for grabs this fall, National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Cole, R-Okla., gently corrected this reporter.
"As of today," Cole said at a breakfast briefing for reporters. He didn't say that further retirements are expected, but he wasn't exactly ruling them out, either.
Cole then recalled how one unnamed GOP leader recently said to him: "Cole, you and I better get out of here before all of the good jobs are gone."
It was a joke. Sort of.
One election cycle as the minority party and Republicans are stampeding to the exits. While at least five of them are trying for higher offices, most are opting to simply quit. They are one retirement away from the record number.
Cole put the best face on the situation Tuesday, telling reporters he did not take the job to preside over the "dismantling" of the party. There's no reason why the GOP can't beat the odds this fall, he said.
"The biggest problem I have, and the Republican Party has, is morale," Cole said. "We went through the worst defeat since Watergate (in 2006), and yet there are still 10 more (GOP House) seats than Ronald Reagan had on his best day."
On Monday, Rep. John Shadegg, R-Ariz., a contender for GOP leader in 2006, became the latest Republican to drop out. By contrast, the Democrats have a mere five open seats going into the fall election

[You are so right. After hearing Obamas victory speech tonight, is this the guy we want to win the election? Or Hillary? What is going on here?]
Fear not. The bigots in the dem party will vote for McCain. That is 20% at least!
Nothing we can do about that. We can vote, but they won’t. The RNC is bringing it on itself. I believe some of them were fired after 2006, and I hope they fire the rest of them after the next fiasco.
Then they are the ones who are to blame when the Rat's will stay in power for another 40 years like they did before
In NY?
McCain will do it to us the same. That is what Amnesty and Global Warming promotion are all about. Those are his special issues. If McCain is elected he will be the last Republican president ever. We cannot overcome 12-??million new Democrats.
We could have four regional primaries, with some time between for the candidates to campaign in major areas of each region.
Finally, enforce republicans vote only in the primary. Independents cannot vote unless they change to the Rep Party at least 60 days prior. Imagine what would have happened this year with just a fair election.
Electing McCain will just put that all off for a couple of years. He is working to accomplish just that. Amnesty. Global Warming.
You didn’t read my entire comment I made. It’s not just the White House we would lose, but we not get Congress and the Senate back for decades to come
That is infantile crap. Voting isn't about "us versus them", its about reflecting and implementing your specific political philosophy.
Real sophisticated argumentation there, Darth.
The Dims were not excited about their candidates in the primary, and they still came back and almost whipped us in the general, because they hated Bush, who we loved at the time. Now the Dims are whipped up, and they’re coming back to knock off a Bush surrogate, that we not only are not excited about, but who many of us see as an agent of a coup, designed to take the party down a road that we don’t wish to travel.
The analogy between the two elections is simplistic and misleading.
I believe that many of us who speak of “sitting out” mean only the Presidential race, and will support any conservative candidate for lesser offices. That is what I mean, at the very least.
No body says you have to vote for McCain or Hitlery. But make sure you vote for your rep, and (unless he is a rat of course) and your Senator
This President has left the GOP in shambles...he should have had a viable VP there at least the last few years....someone who could then run strong.
But no.
Don’t you get it? This is just what the left is hoping for. Us to stay home.
Let me get this straight:
Crossover democrats pushed mcCaniac into the lead and caused the conservative candidates to throw in the towel.
Crossover republicans voted for Obama in order to keep Ubermama from gaining the white house.
Huckabee is a closet conservative, a self proclamed minister, and plays the guitar;
he is therefore our only logical choice.
Ron Paul is a rational human being.
Dennis Kucinich is a human being.
Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo never really existed.
Fred Thompson is a pretty good actor.
Che Gueverra is the patron saint of American politics unless you count Ronald Reagan.
We're about an inch from meltdown.
If you reverse your statement (i.e.: I disagree with candidate X on everything except Y), then you have the situation with McCain. Pouting has nothing to do with it. Principle has everything to do with it.
Concur that we need to vote on election day for the non-POTUS candidates
We will have more impact if we continue to vote for GOP Congress, state and local,...without voting for McSoros. I am a little torqued that here in FL none of our SenaTurds are up for election
A vote for Mc Soros merely because he is GOP is the nuttiest of options. If you vote for RINOs you keep getting them
In 2030, there will still be two major parties, the Democrat Party, and the Partidad de las Latinas, a breakaway from the Democrats.
The Republican Party will be something you Google for your high school term paper, like the Whig Party.
If you want a preview of Los Estados Nuevos de America, go to Argentina. You can buy the tickets with Euros.
Here in TX we have some school districts that are quietly instituting teaching of Spanish to all GRADE school children. Parents are upset.
One district has it two days a week now. You know they will increase that. The schools say the kids should know some basic Spanish.
If they can't convince our generation, they will teach the next. Mold 'em the way you want 'em. Sorta Marxist.
By the looks of it california is about 60% mexican, not mexican/american but proud to be mexican and wanting to take over, not assimilate.
No sense of civic duty ar appreciation for what the people of the USA built, the soldiers fought for and gave them free
there is no way a politician could possibly experience this reality from the ivory tower
Bump.
