Did Obama Play the Age Card Against McCain?
February 11, 2008 8:51 PM
In Baltimore, Md., today, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said the following about presumptive GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.:
"Listen," Obama said, "I respect John McCain for his half century of service to this country. He is a genuine war hero, and we need to honor him for that. He has gone through things that most of us cannot even imagine. He deserves applause, he deserve our respect. But he is on the wrong side of history right now. He wants to perpetuate the Bush economic agenda that has failed working Americans ... I am happy to have a debate with John McCain, because we are the party of tomorrow, hes the party of yesterday. Hes the past, were the future."
ABC News producer Andy Fies has covered Obama a great deal, and says that, while Obama has used this construction about John McCain before -- "I respect John McCain for his half century of service to this country" -- it didn't really stand out before.
Today, however, Obama, 46, punched the "half century" line just a little more at both of his rallies, Fies says -- and the crowd noticed and reacted with some laughter.
Fies adds that, in past speeches, this line slipped by. But today, it stood out, and the audience clearly seemed to think Obama was joking that McCain is too old ... even though the dig (if intended) was encased in words of praise.
The comment, Fies says, seemed designed to portray the 71-year-old McCain as a museum exhibit, a relic.
What do you think? We'll post the video as soon as we can.
Hatched!
Obama will continue attacking McCain’s age until we get smart at the convention and nominate someone else.
“It is very heartening to see us all going FOR McCain ....”
Rather have a rino in the oval office then a prayer rug.
Sadly, there are many so-called conservatives who are saying they’ll vote for Hillary or Obama over McCain!
You mean posters and flags of Fidel and Che Guevara
“Socialist propaganda and indoctrination through the public education system has wreaked havoc on America.”
LOL! Look at what its done to the UK...
And I’m gonna have a helluva time driving a Harley while wearing a burkha.
The Dems will use the age card, the Party of the future stuff (they been doing that since FDR) and doing all they can to turn McCain into a stumbling old fool and an unstable one at that. Its just starting now and in the end it will come down to a landslide for the Democrats/Liberals.
It is called the Grand Old Party for a good reason.
John McCain is the best the GOP could find. The GOP stands for Grand Old Party.
Ronald Reagan may have put the C in Conservative, but John McCain will put the O in Grand Old Party.
[If Obama is the nominee]
The Grand Old Party has nominated a candidate from the past; the Democratic Party has nominated a candidate who looks to the future.
The O in Obama stands for Optimism. The O in GOP stands for Grand Old Party.
Good way to alienate the largest voting block in the country - 60 and older.
Obama is an idiot.
He’ll discover that 18-year-old kids don’t vote much.
So far, they've kept him either up with, or ahead of the Witch. The polls only report "likely voters" which are people who voted for President four years ago. That certainly doesn't include anybody of traditional college age.
Can John McCain be the man who somehow gets them dispirited between now and November? I'd like to see how that's going to work, he's already discouraged the hell out of middle aged guys like me who haven't lost members of my generation over in Iraq.
Right. I’m not laughing.
Been saying for weeks that Obama v McCain TV debates will highlight the multi-generation difference and make McCain look like a grumpy grandpa overdue for a good dump.
