On judges, don't doubt McCain's conservatism

Richmond, Va. - Now that John McCain is all but assured of being the Republican nominee for president, conservatives are struggling to unite behind the man they consider, at best, a maverick – and, at worst, a traitor. ADVERTISEMENT

He promoted amnesty for illegal immigrants. He worked with liberal Democrats. He panders to the mainstream media. Those are just some of the charges conservatives throw at Senator McCain.

A particularly sore point has involved McCain's alleged liberal perspective on selecting federal judges, especially for the Supreme Court. But on this score, conservative fear is misplaced. A careful reading of his statements and his Senate record shows that McCain's "maverick" approach bodes quite well for those who cherish a conservative judiciary.

There’s ONE word of this I agree with!

The rest is kinda shaky.

“Maverick McCain rips GOP By Noelle Straub Friday, April 2, 2004

WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain yesterday unleashed an attack on his own party, saying the GOP is ``astray’’ on key issues and criticizing President Bush [related, bio] on the war in Iraq.

*****``I believe my party has gone astray,’’ McCain said, criticizing GOP stands on environmental and minority issues.

*****``I think the Democratic Party is a fine party, and I have no problems with it, in their views and their philosophy,’’ he said. ``But I also feel the Republican Party can be brought back to the principles I articulated before.’’

*****The maverick senator made the remarks at a legislative seminar hosted by U.S. Rep. Martin T. Meehan (D-Lowell) as he again ruled out running on a ticket with Democrat John F. Kerry [related, bio].

*****The Arizona Republican took on President Bush for failing to prepare Americans for a long involvement in Iraq, saying, ``You can’t fly in on an aircraft carrier and declare victory and have the deaths continue. You can’t do that.’’

*****McCain said the U.S. should seek more U.N. involvement in Iraq. ``Many people in this room question, legitimately, whether we should have gone in or not,’’ he said, adding that that debate ``will be part of this presidential campaign.’”

My gut is that McCain is one who does not want to upset the balance on the court too much. I think the best we would get out of McCain is a moderate justice should one of the liberals retire. McCain will be better than Hilbama on this, but not much.

President McCain would replace Justice John Paul Stevens (a Ford appointee) with another John Paul Stevens. I guarantee it.

These apologists will never cut us a break, they never acknowledge one damn fact that builds the case that this guy has a stick up his butt about conservatives, and hates our guts enough to be capable of running the most unpopular Presidentcy in history, with a majority of Democrats and Republicans disliking him. Thats how nuts this old fart is.

It’s remarkable to see so many party hacks pushing McCain so hard & so fast, and with so little merit.

There is no struggling on my part to get behind McCain. It ain’t gonna happen. McCain is not and I repeat NOT my candidate, he does not represent my positions on issue I feel are paramount to our survival. So the republican party has effectively abandon conservatives. now the question remains what do we as conservatives do. It certainly isn’t voting for McCain.

"...conservatives are struggling to unite behind the man they consider, at best, a maverick"

Let's correct this misstatement:

"Party hacks are struggling to convince Conservatives they should unite behind the man that has constantly shown he has no respect for their beliefs and principles or for Conservatives themselves, while at the same time claiming to be a Conservative himself.
McCain has been rude and disdainful to Conservatives his whole career but now needs their support to give him any chance of winning the presidency.
Desperate party stooges laughingly write off his penchant for siding with liberals and leftists against Conservatives as being a bit of a maverick."

That would probably be the worst case scenario (but probably more likely a Souter). What I guarantee you is that the best case scenario would be an O’Connor. Forget about anyone to the right of that.

He wouldn't give us Scalia or Thomas, but at least it'll be a milquetoast moderate like O'Connor rather than a screaming moonbat like Ginsberg. We wouldn't get close to getting a Scalia or a Thomas through confirmation anyway.

I have more of a problem with the fact that he's a vindictive unstable lying loon than with his prospective court appointments.

I was watching "The Last King of Scotland" the other night, and I felt like I was watching futurevision of McCain with a tan.

McCain does support and like Janice Rogers Brown in her present position, and she’s very conservative.

This is rich.

Just ignore all of McAmnesty’s liberal actions and believe he is going to act in a manner when it comes to SCOTUS appointments that will counter his bad behavior.

Wow, what an excellent grasp on logic this quack of a writer has.

Let’s see here is Juan McAmnesty’s handiwork:

1. McCain-Kennedy
2. McCain-Fiengold
3. McCain-Lieberman
4. Kerry-McCain
5. Rabid support for Global Warming Scam
6. Support for Embryonic Stem Cell Research
7. Support for anything that has Amnesty in it.

And somehow we are supposed to ignore all this and believe that we would get adequate Judges out of McAmnesty????

Who is this jerk kidding?!?!?!

More of the "Lessor of Two Evils" game.

Ain't playing that game anymore, wouldn't be prudent!
