Tomorrow is, of course, primary day in Virgina.
The question is -- how can I get the biggest effect with my primary vote, on shaping the November election?
A protest vote against McCain, i.e., for Huckabee? Sorry, can't pull the lever for the Huckster. Just can't do it -- as George Bush 41 would say, "not gonna do it".
A protest vote for Romney? Maybe, and that's my initial impulse, but it's not clear what I buy for that.
Crossing over and voting for Obama? That's my inclination. I'm worried about the effect, one that'e been cited by many (I read it again today in the latest Susan Estrich column) about the "gap" between Obams's polling numbers (even the exit polls) versus the final reality of the private voting booth results, which get spun as "Hillary comebacks". As my father would say, "Comebacks my arse."
The polling gap is telling anyone that wants to notice that "some democrats are uncomfortable about race", and are lying about it even as they leave the polls, and while that's no surprise to conservatives, it's an especially worrisome factor right now.
We've heard all the talk about who, between Hillary and Obama, is the more formidable candidate against the repubs, but I take that all for idle chatter. One elementary fact I can say for certain, one thing that I know -- -- is that I cannot BEAR the thought of either Clinton in the White House again. So I'm going to break with Ann Coulter on this one -- for me it's visceral.
So -- my intent is to vote democratic tomorrow, and pull the lever for Barack. Remember the old Steve Martin bit. Steve, how are you sooo funny? His response - I put baloney in my shoes, and then I feel funny! Perhaps I'll get the baloney out before I head to the polls. I know I'll get a funny look from the registrar of voters, who'se a personal friend of mine. I'll give her a wink as she says "oh my!"
It’s the old lock the government up for 4 years gambit.
I think it could work with Obama.
He’s so left he won’t be able to get anything done.
It’s a big loser for the Iraq war though.
Go ahead then you will be the real RINO :)
That's where I'm at too. I don't know which one of them would be worse.
I had thought about voting in the Rat primary this year because the GOP process has become FUBAR’d, but they stamp your voter card in Texas with which primary you voted in. I don’t want to be stuck carrying a card for two years that claims I am a Democrat.
Therefore, I shall vote for Fred Thompson like I have always wanted.
OTOH the leadership is so loony who knows what anything means to them...
Oprah’s Kid?
How embarrassing for you.
You have a point, but I use this logic on the Jehovah’s Witnesses who come to my house. This government was established that WE are Caesar and to not vote is to relinquish our duty.
Speaking for myself, I cannot bear the thought either of a criminal/felon couple in the White House for another 8 years. Obama, despite his liberal views at least appears to be a decent guy. If Obama is the price we have to pay to keep the Clintons out of the oval office it may be a price worth paying, especially when McPain is the alternative. (As far as I am concerned the Republicans already lost the WH when McCain was nominated, so the choice now is between a Clinton and a non CLinton)
I think the best case scenario for the GOP is for Hillary to pull this out and put a wedge right down the middle of the donkeys. So may will be disenchanted once the “machine” roars back and takes the nomination from the golden brown savior.
Just don’t vote.
Interesting strategy vote. I think if I were going the strategy route I’d go for Hillary. I believe we can beat her- even with McCain as our nominee. If it’s Obama vs McCain- barring something dramatic event in the next 8 months- Obama will likely sweep the floor with McCain. A frightening idea- the implications of which we’ve only glanced at to date.
Or- write in your favorite candidate!
Virginia’s a WTA state, so a protest vote won’t do much of anything unless everyone else does too.
Maryland’s proportional so Mitt’s getting my vote.
Weird. If you had told me I would be voting for him 2 months ago, I never would have believed it.
I would rather Clinton be their candidate, but Obama be President if McDole doesn’t have the votes.
Perhaps I didn't make myself clear. Let me shout this out:
I have NO INTENTION of voting for a Dem in November. Remember, this is a primary. I'm making a strategic vote to shape the battlefield for November.
And I'm telling you my strategy.
I'm still choking on what I'm going to do about McCain in November. But that's a different matter -- tomorrow is an ENTIRELY different matter.
Bump!
I say do voting for obama to stop Hillary is very smart. She is the Devil! And we know it, stop her now!
So you have no trouble voting for the most liberal Democrat in the Senate but have trouble with Huckabee? That makes no sense, particularly in light of the possible cult of personality going with Obama. I really don’t want our own Juan and Evita Peron here in the USA.
Yeah, they can figure out how to make the new nationalized health care insurance system more efficient. As Reagan put it, "the closest thing to immortality on this earth is a federal program." (paraphrasing)
