Also read this speech that Gen. Kelly gave last year (at BlackFive). http://www.blackfive.net/main/2007/09/marine-general-.html
This part of the speech struck home with me. I guess I am showing my age as well.
“The reality was that when many in this room grew up, and I know I am showing my age here, we were surrounded by men, real men, who had gladly worn the country’s cloth in wars against fascism and communism. The earliest memories we had as kids back then were of comic books and paper backs that honored the sacrifices of the super heroes of those conflicts. It was a time when little boys could play guns, and weren’t considered at risk to be psychopaths. To stand up when the national anthem was played or say the pledge of allegiance and a prayer to any God you worshiped before school, wasn’t considered offensive to the sensitivities of the nation’s selfproclaimed intellectual elite. Places like Guadalcanal, Coral Sea, Normandy, Iwo Jima, the Chosin Reservoir, and Hue City, were real to us then, and we knew without thinking that we owed the nation a debt.”

Like Fallujah, the schools are open, markets thrive and post-war recovery gains momentum across Al Anbar. This war is not won but is being won, and today primarily by the Iraqis themselves. Al-Qaida is not defeated, but it is on the ropes. Its membership knows that if they are foolish enough to come out of the holes they hide in, they will not only meet tough young Americans standing firm and unafraid, but also Iraqi police and soldiers in vastly increased numbers and effectiveness. No matter what has been accomplished in the WOT, most of the American MSM watchers will never know about it. It sickens me.
GOD BLESS our wonderful, awesome troops!

I don't doubt that the surge, and the superior administration of Gen Patraeus, is bringing more order and peace to Iraq, but would someone answer a question for me?
Can Muslim countries EVER really approximate ordered, representative government with a free flow of ideas, some of which, inevitably, will be critical of the Q'uran? When we allowed the Iraqis to establish a constitution that put "Islam" above all else, did we betray the cause? Does the fact that Chaldean Christians have more trouble worshipping freely now, than they did under Sadaam, bother any of you?
Don't get me wrong. I have no trouble with war. But I have trouble with half-ass war. If we are going to conquer territory, conquer it, obliterate it, destroy it, homestead it, and send in the missionaries and the civil engineers to rebuild it.
But when we left Islam pre-eminant, were we fooling ourselves? This would have been like conquering Germany and allowing fascism to remain.

Good to see some of the good news leaking out. The MSM and their Democrat friends can build their wall, but some of us can penetrate it. ;-)

Al-Qaida is not defeated, but it is on the ropes. Its membership knows that if they are foolish enough to come out of the holes they hide in, they will not only meet tough young Americans standing firm and unafraid, but also Iraqi police and soldiers in vastly increased numbers and effectiveness.More importantly, Al-Queda is meeting resistance from regular people. These folks are no longer cowed by the AQ thugs, and are turning them in, and leading the police and military to their weapons caches, in greater numbers. This is the BEST sign that things are getting better.
