The Right Is Wrong on McCain
The Wall Street Journal ^ | February 9, 2008 | Robert McFarlane

Posted on 02/09/2008 10:32:20 AM PST by TenYearLurker

There's an old Groucho Marx riff in which he launches a new career as a stick-up artist -- while worrying that his native cowardice may not induce the requisite fear among his victims. Sure enough, after a little time in a dark alley he springs out to confront his first victim, points his gun to his own head and says, "Take one step closer and I'll kill myself."

Such is the posture today among pundits on the far right of the Republican Party as Sen. John McCain moves closer to receiving his party's nomination. Consider the destructive implications of their pledge to work against Mr. McCain's nomination and even -- in the event he is nominated -- not to vote in the general election. Start with where it would leave our country -- presumably under the leadership of either Democrat candidate -- in the two domains where we will face critical challenges in the years ahead: our national security and the threat of an economic meltdown.

The problem is that McCain has sided with the Democrat, blame America first crowd on every part of homeland security, except Iraq and Afghanistan.

McCain can’t do the job of keeping America safe!

There is something John McCain could do to sway me to vote for him. If he successfully caused the McCain-Feingold legislation to be totally repealed before the election, I might have to reassess.

I have no intention of sitting out the election. Since there is no chance of a conservative becoming president, it is CRITICAL that we outdo expectations in Congress.

If we can hold or improve our position in Congress, and give them an opponent like Hillary to fight, we can come out way ahead!

"Take one step closer and I'll kill myself."

Perfect description of the kiddies that are grabbing up their marbles and running home...

Thank God there seems to be some level headed adults in the party ranks that realize, as Romney and Thompson - and Bolton etc. - are saying:

"This is no longer about past preferences or differences. It is about what is best for our country and for me that means that Republican should close ranks behind John McCain,"

Our enemies are the communist/islamic RAts

We need to grow up and play the hand we have been dealt - not throw down the cards and run away with our knickers in a twist

What kind of showing is required by that subset of conservatves who share your view of McCain?

An honest once. Because the spin on McCain and Iraq is a lie. McCainiacs really got to stop trying to sell us a McCain we know does not exist.

McCain was father of the Baker Comission and the plan to sell out Iraq to Iran/Syria. He only started talking tough on Iraq when he was dead in the water politically and the Surge looked like it was producing results. He had no where else to go so he latched on to the Surge in desperation.

“HOW DO THEY THINK INSULTING US WILL WIN US?”

The WSJ is arrogant and stupid like their candidate.

It’s not McCain’s issues that make him so dispicable.

It’s the fact that he was the MAIN source behind media-lib-Democratic jihad against President Bush and Republicans the past eight years.

As someone who worked at a sizable newspaper, I was told in no uncertain terms that McCain was THE main “anonymous” source for many of the hate-Bush stories the national media published from 2000-2007.

I wouldn’t be surprised of McCain was the leaker to the NYT on some of the anti-Bush stories.

His claim to be this big proponent of “American prestige” falls flat when I consider all the embarrassment McCain has caused the Administration the past eight years.

Gitmo, “secret CIA” safe houses, waterboarding interrogations, and on and on.

McCain has such a viceral hatred of everything Bush his mental capacity has been clouded.

The only good that McCain will bring is a reduction in sleeping pill abuse.... because the man is so boring, voters will fall asleep just listening to his speeches.

This guy is confused. Suicide is picking a traitor to lead your own party. We will recover much faster if we lose than if we "win" with McCain.

BTW, at my GOP caucus today, many people cast their ballots before the candidate represenative speakers spoke, feeling certain about their votes. After the McCain speaker, the lady next to me said, "Can I change my vote." The McCain representative stood up and reminded everyone why they do not like or trust McCain. She was horrible. I clapped for everyone before and after just to be polite, except this lady. I clapped when she rose to the podium. I clapped after being told about McCain's torture experience. Then it went DOWN HILL and I could not clap at the end. Not even clap, let alone cast a vote. His own supporter was sorry she voted for him.

John McCain's time as President will be a living hell because even his best friends are going to tell him he's nuts until he has a total cerebral blow-out.

The little dictator, McNut, will blow a gasket when he start getting all the negative stuff similar to what Bush is getting. Right on, he will blow a gasket. But the picture of him behind the oval desk or giving the State of the Union address is insulting.

There are three standards: “beyond a reasonable doubt”; “by clear and convincing evidence” or “by a preponderance of the evidence”, (in other words, it is more likely than not).

With all due respect . . . truly . . . that doesn't tell me anything, because the standards lack objective criteria.

Earlier today Tom Delay said something similar, to the effect that McCain had to show . . . had to prove . . . to conservatives (as if he was speaking for all conservatives) his worthiness before he could expect conservative support. I don't have a problem with anyone demanding such proof, I just don't understand what he could do to prove himself without holding office and then meeting expectations to most everyone's satisfaction.

You make great points there, Johnnie.

McCain’s supporters are doing themselves no good whatever with this kind of tactic.

McCain should go to the Senate and pick a fight with Democrats on a solidly Conservative issue. Spending caps, fully funding the border fence, something. Show Conservatives he is willing to put actions to his words. That he is willing to fight FOR us, not just against us.

He has time since it looks like Hilly and Obama are going to be slugging it out for months yet.

...not to vote in the general election.

The WSJ is wrong.

People are saying they won't vote for a McCain ticket in the general election, but still vote for the conservatives in the election to try the minimize the damage potential of the liberals.

they asked him how do you support an unpopular war that is causing your poll numbers to be very low

It was not McCain's position on the war that was causing his low poll numbers, and he well knew that.

robert mcfarland needs to be educated by Ford Fairlane! What an idiotic essay from a man who would not know a Conservative if he had one sitting in front of him... which this girlyman castroti couldn’t possibly experience, because he only hangs with child molesting abortion lovers.
