The Right Is Wrong on McCain
The Wall Street Journal ^ | February 9, 2008 | Robert McFarlane

Posted on 02/09/2008 10:32:20 AM PST by TenYearLurker

There's an old Groucho Marx riff in which he launches a new career as a stick-up artist -- while worrying that his native cowardice may not induce the requisite fear among his victims. Sure enough, after a little time in a dark alley he springs out to confront his first victim, points his gun to his own head and says, "Take one step closer and I'll kill myself."

Such is the posture today among pundits on the far right of the Republican Party as Sen. John McCain moves closer to receiving his party's nomination. Consider the destructive implications of their pledge to work against Mr. McCain's nomination and even -- in the event he is nominated -- not to vote in the general election. Start with where it would leave our country -- presumably under the leadership of either Democrat candidate -- in the two domains where we will face critical challenges in the years ahead: our national security and the threat of an economic meltdown.

McCain’s lousy record speaks for itself. From voting against the tax cuts to amnesty for illegal aliens.

I am not going to say that I will sit out the elections. I will still vote for the most conservative candidates in Washington state.

But I am not going to vote for McCain because Hillary is worse.

If he picks a true conservative for his running mate then maybe, just maybe, I might reconsider. I’m not talking about Huckabee or some other rino. I’m talking about someone like Duncan Hunter or Jeff Sessions or Ted Poe.

I’m not even sure that McCain is going to try to court the conservative base. I heard either on Hannity or Levin that he was proud of the fact that he can attract independents and moderates.

I expect he’ll just continue to thumb his nose at us.

A vote for McCain is a vote for Juan Hernandez.

It's past consideration for McCain will be the next Bob Dole.

His chances against Hitlery or Obama in the general aren't big enough to plug a gnat's a$$.

Job Applications for Sec of Defense and National Security Advisor should be went to Barrack Obama. (Not that I’m questioning your motives or anything)

Conservatives just say SHOW ME JOHN

He's already shown me in the one area I need to secure my vote for him.

Quoting jveritas: "Many months ago when the time was tough in Iraq and McCain was down in the polls they asked him how do you support an unpopular war that is causing your poll numbers to be very low, he replied: 'I would rather lose and elections than lose the war', those are the words of a man who will make a great Commander in Chief."

What kind of showing is required by that subset of conservatves who share your view of McCain?

No surprise. The WSJ wants more illegal slave labor.

Juan McShamnesty will work to get it for them.

>> The 33% of the Republican Party that gave us McCain, including apparently McFarlane, had best get busy on the phone banks, fund raising, and lit drops; because the folks who have done this grunt work for the last 7 Presidential campaigns will be sitting this one out.

You nailed it. A lot of us will probably hold our noses and pull the lever for McCain, but it won’t be enough.

I may or may not end up voting for the lesser of the evils — haven’t decided yet. But it’s for sure that I won’t part with my hard-earned dough or time for him.

I’m not convinced yet that Hillary would be worse than McCain in the War on Terror. I don’t know if McCain has very good judgment. On one hand I can see him doing something stupid without consulting more knowledgeable experts. On the other hand he seems overly anxious in wanting the media to love him and might cave if he received any bad press whatsoever.

I find it odd that TenYearLurker hasn’t responded to any of the comments so far. I still don’t know where he was coming from in posting this article.

Do you agree or disagree with it TenYearLurker?

Or are you just a shill for McCain?

“What kind of showing is required . . . “

There are three standards: “beyond a reasonable doubt”; “by clear and convincing evidence” or “by a preponderance of the evidence”, (in other words, it is more likely than not).

By which one of those standards do either of you think candidate McCain has proven he is a conservative?

We're going to hear this sh!t for the next nine months...

And it's going to be annoying right up until the day of the election because the whole time we'll know two things for certain: McCain is a worthless POS and the next President of the United States is going to be a Democrat.

All the guy (or gal) did was post an article. Nobody posts to every article they post. Especially not the first.

And if he (or she) should happen to be a shill for McCain, wael, whoopee do, tomodachi, I'll give him (or her) a helping, enthusiastic hand.

Your in for a rough 1st day here TenYearLurker, you will find most FReepers prefer the anti-military and pro-choice candidates Hillary or Obama over McCain in here.
