A company of Marine Corps Reservists received a cold send-off from downtown Toledo yesterday by order of Mayor Carty Finkbeiner.
The 200 members of Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, based in Grand Rapids, Mich., planned to spend their weekend engaged in urban patrol exercises on the streets of downtown as well as inside the mostly vacant Madison Building, 607 Madison Ave.
Toledo police knew days in advance about their plans for a three-day exercise. Yet somehow the memo never made it to Mayor Finkbeiner, who ordered the Marines out yesterday afternoon just minutes before their buses were to arrive.
"The mayor asked them to leave because they frighten people," said Brian Schwartz, the mayor's spokesman.

No, there is a difference here. IMHO, this is not about a recruiting office, this is urban warfare on out downtown streets. Not appropriate.
Build a mock up somewhere in the sticks and practice there. Allowing the troops to be seen by the American sheeple drilling in our streets throws up a whole lotta red flags for me. If the sheeple get used to seeing it, and someone one day uses the troops for law enforcement, then there will be a whole lot of folks passive on the idea.
No, find another way to train in urban warfare. Does not belong in our cities...
He is embarassed because he fears the rooted core of his dieing city will be exposed to national scorn.
Build a mockup in the sticks? Under federal contracting guidelines? How much do you think 10 acres of mock urban area would cost?
There are plenty of empty buildings in Toledo; I’m guessing that with this forward looking political leadership there will be more to come.
I tend to agree with your assessment (but want to know more). Is this SOP? I’ve never heard of these sorts of “neighborhood” exercises before.
Bump in the hopes that this gets fleshed out a bit more...
As I said on the ongoing previous thread, there was no need to waste the travel time/money going to Detroit South, (Toledo.)
We have lots of "Urban" right here in Grand Rapids.
Mayor Carty Finkbeiner? Finkbeiner? LOLOL!
Interesting that they passed the place they need to be, Dearbornistan, MI, on the way to Toledo, OH. Any Toledoites listening: Has the slime from Dearbornistan oozed its way southward into Toledo?
Back during the Clinton years, they wanted to do these exercises in urban areas and free republic came UNGLUED!! There was tremendous debate over it being it was right in the aftermath of Ruby Ridge and Waco.
The Military does not have any business on our streets training. There are enough military bases built up enough for this training.
It was not okay for Clinton to do it, it’s not okay for anyone else.

Let the nitwits at toledo gov know.
The name kind of says it all ... you Huckster types out there in FReeper land beware.
I hope they are on their way to continue this exercise in Berkeley !
good point, they should be training on the mexican border
A facility already exists for MOUT training at Fort Polk:
Marines to Mayor.....make us leave!
They were here doing the same exercises in 2004 and 2006. Was not a problem then for the same mayor, why now? The mayor is an egotistical loon. I think the fact that he was not notified before hand was his problem with it. The police knew and he did not. Your concern about troops in an actual downtown setting is another matter. This guy let these kids ride 4 hours on a bus just to turn them around and send them home.
I wonder why?
Toledo Islamic Academy
Toledo Islamic Academy was established in 1994 and has seen exponential growth and expansion. What started out as a little idea somehow became a reality.
Toledo Islamic Academy offers school children of all ages an Islamic environment to grow and learn. Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade high schoolers attend class together in a supportive and unadulterated environment.
Children are taught by Muslim staff members that uphold the highest ideals and standards. Integrity, character, and behavior is emphasized throughout the curriculum. The staff and administration harp on these values and work with the children to help them develop morally, spiritually, and academically.
Our students are ranking very high on standardized achievement tests. Some of the high school students are even taking classes at the University of Toledo in a cooperative in the post-secondary program, thereby receiving high school and college credit simultaneously.
Toledo Islamic Academy is highly advanced and technologically centuries ahead. A full computer lab with advanced classes in today’s most powerful software packages provides our students with the tools of the future. A science and chemistry laboratory allows children to apply the basics in actual experiments.
Our high school graduates are attending colleges all over the world and excelling in their respective fields. We are very proud of their accomplishments.
Toledo Islamic Academy is one of the most advanced and organized Islamic Schools in North America. Many families have relocated to Toledo due to the success and advanced features ofour school. No other school has the features that TIA has:
* Advanced technologically
* Modernized and all new facility
* Stable staff and administration
* Results-oriented outlook
* Great facility
* All Muslim staff
* Highly selective process
Thanks... I am getting a little warm over here from the other thread on this. I’ll pass it along as an added layer of asbestos!!
