Unravelling the North Wests Viking past
08 February 2008
The blood of the Vikings is still coursing through the veins of men living in the North West of England according to a new study which has been just published.
Focusing on the Wirral in Merseyside and West Lancashire the study of 100 men, whose surnames were in existence as far back as medieval times, has revealed that 50 per cent of their DNA is specifically linked to Scandinavian ancestry.
The collaborative study, by The University of Nottingham, the University of Leicester and University College London, reveals that the population in parts of northwest England carries up to 50 per cent male Norse origins, about the same as modern Orkney. The 14-strong research team, funded by the Wellcome Trust and a prestigious Watson-Crick DNA anniversary award from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), was led by the University of Nottinghams Professor Stephen Harding and Professor Judith Jesch and the University of Leicesters Professor Mark Jobling.
Stephen Harding, Professor of Physical Biochemistry in the School of Biosciences said; DNA on the male Y-chromosome is passed along the paternal line from generation to generation with very little change, providing a powerful probe into ancestry. So a mans Y-chromosome type is a marker to his paternal past. The method is most powerful when populations rather than individuals are compared with each other. We can also take advantage of the fact that surnames are also passed along the paternal generations. Using tax and other records the team selected volunteers who possess a surname present in the region prior to 1600. This gets round the problems of large population movements that have occurred since the Industrial revolution in places like Merseyside.
After their expulsion from Dublin in 902AD the Wirral Vikings, initially led by the Norwegian Viking INGIMUND, landed in their boats along the north Wirral coastline. Place names still reflect the North Wests Viking past. Aigburth, Formby, Crosby, Toxteth, Croxteth are all Viking names even the football team Tranmere is Viking. Thingwall is the name of a Viking parliament or assembly (Thingvellir in Iceland) and the only two in England are both in the North West one in Wirral and one in Liverpool.
The results of this research have just been published by Molecular Biology and Evolution and a grant from the Wellcome Foundation has been received to extend the work to North Lancashire, Cumbria, the Solway and Yorkshire.

My New Zealand neighbor (Immigrant), who is I1a1a has a Scandanavian marker too...his name is Baugh.
We were invaders to the British Isles.
Human migrations 12,000 years ago. There's a 'fuss' going on as to which is the Viking Gene...The R1a or the I1a. Most say R1a.
Very interesting, real men.
The Angles, Saxons and Jutes (according to Bede), who came across the sea to conquer Britain were also real men, and women.
America - many Americans of "English" ancestry - especially those with Norman blood that came with William the Conqueror...from Normandy -
The "Normans" were "Norsemen" - going back to Wm The Conqueror's ancestor, Rollo the Great, Norse King who first went to France...With Wm. the Conqueror, went thousands of Normans to England, to be given lands and castles in return for their service - some 600 years of descendants later, the Englishmen started coming to the shores of America -
Any genealogist could have saved a lot of grant money - particularly in this study where they simply researched the DNA of DIRECT descendants still living in the lands of their ancestors.
Where did they THINK it would lead? To oriental ancestors? duh
I've got to come up with some cockamamie "study" and plug in on all this grant money floating around. Hmmm - Maybe I can get a couple hundred thousand to study the phenomena of wounded animals that have come from the forest to me in search of help?
No, that sounds to valid. Maybe "Why did the moose come into my yard at high noon and walk up and sniff the hummingbird feeder - did he think it was a big red apple?
Yeah, that aught to do.
You’d have a better chance for a grant if you went in search of DNA of the Black Irish or the Picts. Apparently no-one else can find it: Sykes or Oppenheimer.
How about for Norse/Eric the Red's DNA in the Mandans? and the Iroquois of the Long Houses
That would probably work but I'd suggest you look for Welsh DNA (Prince Madoc) in the Mandans.
Been there, done that too...
Along with trailing the KT's through Nova Scotia and beyond.......

Well - it explains Liverpool and Man Utd supporters but doesn’t account for Everton or Man City....
